I had both tools. Originally had the Charge TTi but gave it to my dad when the P4 came out because I thought I would like the P4 better. Big mistake. I missed the bit driver more than I thought. I also used the hook on the serrated blade quite a bit. I ended up given my P4 to my step son and bought another TTi.

Leatherman Free P4 v Leatherman Charge +TTI You cannot watch any KZfaq videos on multitools without claims that the P4 or the TTI is the best everyday carry. So, since I have both TTI + multi flat driver bit set (will call this the “set”), and the P4, I decided to carry both in leather pouches on my belt, and use them both for the same tasks. TTI: Weighs 351g with pouch and set. P4: Weighs 296g with pouch. Task 1. Walking dog in open paddock. Noticed that the screw bolt in a small shackle on collar was loose. a) TTI to rescue. 1. Step on dog lead to keep dog there. 2. Open pouch. 3. Remove TTI. 4. Use two hands to open the handles. 5. Look to see which handle had the screwdriver bit holder. 6. Use finger nail to open the (locking) bit holder. 7. Pull out flat head/phillips bit to see the FH driver on other end. 8. Note that the FH driver was too big. 9. Put this bit in pocket. 10. Extract “set” from pouch. 11. Locate small FH driver bit. 12. Extract this bit. 13. Put set into pouch 14. Insert into bit holder 15. Tighten screw. Done! 16. Remove small FH driver bit from bit holder. 17. Retrieve set from pouch. 18. Replace small FH driver in set. 19. Place set into pouch. 20. Retrieve FH/Phillips bit from pocket 21. Replace this into bit holder. 22. Two hands to unlock bit holder. 23. Fold bit holder into handle. 24. Two hands to close handles. 25. Replace TTI into pouch. 26. All done. Ready to move on. b) P4 to rescue. 1. Hold shackle with L hand. 2. Open pouch and remove P4 (One hand only. = OHO) 3. With R hand thumb flip up 4 small tools. (OHO) 4. Select small FH driver. (OHO) 5. Open fully to lock position. (OHO) 6. Tighten screw. 7. Release lock and replace small driver. (OHO) 8. Replace P4 in pouch. 9. All done. Ready to move on. WINNER FOR TASK 1: P4, by a huge margin. Task 2: Removing cloth label from towel. a) TTI to rescue 1. Open pouch, remove TTI. 2. Open handles to access tools. (Two hand operation = THO) 3. Identify handle with scissors. 4. Use thumbnail to open scissors to lock position. 5. Rotate scissors from fully open to operating position (THO) 6. Use scissors to cut label. 7. Rotate scissors to fully open position. 8. Unlock scissors, fold into handle. (THO) 9. Close handles (THO) 10. Replace TTI in pouch. 11. All done. Ready to move on. b) P4 to rescue. 1. Open pouch, remove P4 2. Identify scissors. 3. Open scissors. (OHO) 4. Open blades with thumb. 5. Cut label 6. Fold scissors into handle (OHO) 7. Replace P4 in pouch. 8. All done. Ready to move on. WINNER: P4, easily. Task 3. Opening lid of tin of contact cement. TTI went through most of the stages of Task 1 to extract the large FH driver/pry bar. This was largely a two hand operation. Steps 1-8. P4: open pry bar (OHO), use, replace. Steps 1-5, OHO. WINNER: P4. Easily. So, which one would I want to carry for all those little ordinary jobs that one encounters all day long?? In other words, which one for every day carry? ANSWER, AND EASY WINNER: P4. Briefly, why: • P4: one handed operation. • All tools accessible from outside of handles, so don’t have to open the handles to get at tools. • All tools needed are all ready to use. NO fiddling with tool set. • No tearing at little nail hooks to open the tools. Just flip up with thumb. • Both are Leatherman tools, so both have excellent build quality. • P4 much lighter. See weights at top. • TTI is 2mm narrower than P4. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ I hope that this helps you to make a decision on your everyday carry.

On the OTHER hand.... Further thoughts on Leatherman Free P4 and Charge TTI side-by-side comparison. (NOTE: A "multitool" = the tool itself plus any attachments, eg, driver bits, saw, file, etc that can be carried in the multitool pouch. If you have to go to your toolbox to get an attachment or accessory, then you DO NOT need a multitool. Just use the normal tools in the toolbox.) I was visiting a friend during my above comparison of the L. Free and Charge TTI. 1. Their garage door remote control needed a new battery, which we had, but the Free had no tools to fit the tiny Phillips head screws. The Charge's micro driver did the job, as did the #0 Phillips head bit in the driver bit set. Charge scores 1, Free, 0. 2. The front brake caliper on his bike needed adjusting. Needed 5mm hex driver. Charge TTI's bitset had 5mm hex driver. Insert in bit holder, job done. Free had no tool to fit, and recessed hex nut eluded Free's pliers. Charge scores 1, Free 0. 3. 2cm wood chisel needed sharpening. (V hard steel, fine edge). Charge's diamond file did the job. Free's file too coarse to put edge on chisel. Would not even mark it. Score: Charge TTI: 1. Free: 0 Conclusion: The Free has convenient one handed opening of limited tools. Charge has all the gear, even though you have to do a bit of fiddling to set it up for each job. FINAL ASSESSMENT: Overall WINNER: Leatherman Charge TTI. Decisions, decisions!

Hey thanks for the detailed comment! Love it, and I agree with you, the Charge has the edge on the Free, but I think the people needling one hand accessibility will keep leaning towards the P series. Thanks for your contribution!!!

@@Fablades Hi Fablades. I have a collection of about 25 Leatherman, Gerber, Victorinox, SOG, and knock-off multitools. All of which points to one thing: there is no perfect multitool! The Charge TTI can do just about everything that the P4 and others can do, with the exception of the L Crunch, with its excellent locking pliers. It is all a trade-off between form and function, and function and convenience. I think the Charge + bitset has probably more function than the others, but not the convenience. I guess I'm still waiting for someone to produce the perfect multitool! You have handled more multitools, and have far more experience than I have... What do you think? Cheers.
@Fablades
@Fablades 3 жыл бұрын
I agree, the perfect multi tool doesn’t exist yet..that’s why I have a few, and the important thing is to be able to choose the right tool for the right job. The Surge can be used with many bits and many saws, very versatile. The Charge being more compact and light, but at the same time almost as complete, offers a valid alternative when weight and size are important.

Made this decision a few weeks ago. Decided on the Free P4 because I preferred the locking mechanism of the tools. Mods from people like Zapwizard will fill in the slight gap in tools. The tool I have used the most after the pliers is the file. The Free P4’s nail file seems mostly useless. The Charge Plus TTi has some real improvements over my old Wave like opening the pliers locks the main tools in, Better knife steel and the bit drivers. The P4 has fancy opening but actually is mostly a down grade from the look of it. If you have many situations where one handed plier opening is important or need a heavier duty pliers but can’t fit a surge in your pocket, then it may be good.

I have busted the removable belt clip from the charge a bunch of times. Caught it on a seatbelt once, also caught it on some random object I was walking by. The lip at the entry point is raised a fair amount, and catches easily. It's thinner steel, and the narrow, hourglass-like top concentrates flex forces, as the thicker steel around it resists the bending. I am no engineer, but I suspect the straight steel of the Free clip would distribute the load FAR better.

@@Fablades I should have also mentioned my charge is about to go back for repair, because as you predicted, I snapped the pliers. I tried to pry something with one side of the jaws, and it busted right off. Now that's not how they are intended to be used, but the force I applied was pretty low, so it was disappointing. P4 is flawed should be no friction in plier joint you should be able to hold horizontally and tool should fold shut with no assistance. TTI only flexes until contact with underside stuff, crimps come out fine. So called weakening hole,is for hooking any kind of wire that will fit in it. It does this well do to chamfered edges. 😉

Thank you for the review. It was helpful. Its a good review but could be better(at least for me) if you put more emphasis on comparing 'like features or tools' rather than comparing dissimilar features that share the same unit position. Maybe tool position within the unit is important to some folks - but I don't see much benefit. Also, that small scale on the P4 would be good for measuring internal lengths - for example a blind hole depth or similar - whereas the scale on the Charge is good only for measuring external lengths. But again, I appreciate your review. - Thanks

Those nubs on the P4 make it useless for any sustained hard use. Stupidest design flaw of any Leatherman. I tried really hard to get over those things digging into my hands, but having to grip down on them for any task that was more than a dainty little task, particularly if I had to repeat multiple times made the pliers painful. Made the P4's main tool junk. Went back to my big old Surge, which if you need your tool to be hard use instrument, is amazing and damn near perfect.

On my left side in my pocket I Cary my Spyderco PM2 with my phone. Just those nubs are actually painful. People complain not having a bit driver is a huge drawback, the only bit I need in Canada that’s not included is a Robertson number 2, and honestly if I’m removing a Robertson head screw I want a dedicated screwdriver or drill anyway, you need the torque to remove a 2.5 to 4 inch screw so having changeable bits is a waste to me.
