The Leatherman Rev was initially a very good budget multi tool when it was first introduced. Though it does not offer a generous amount of capability as some of it's competitors, the lower price made it a viable option. In today's market however, the price has risen beyond what I would consider to be a budget option. It is one of the very few Leatherman products that I do not recommend.
Buy it on Amazon:

I'm an electrician who's always kind of stayed away from multi tools because they're too bulky and have a lot of tools I'd never use, or because they're too small and therefore useless. Not to mention the high price point of a high end Leatherman; just too much for a "trial tool" to see if I even like it. I saw the Rev in Home Depot a few weeks ago for $40 and decided that was reasonable enough that I'd give it a shot. Let me tell you, I love the Rev. I've got a few rebuttals to some points you've made. I understand it might not be a tool for everyone, but here's my viewpoint. First and foremost, the most used part of the tool for me and likely for most, the pocket knife. I exclusively open the knife one handed. I agree, it's not the most graceful thing, but it is plenty do-able. The pliers cutters I have found are fine up to 6 awg solid copper. I have not tried 4 awg, but I unelieve it would also cut that albiet not as easily. I cut #6 ground wires a few times a week with it as it does well enough to not be worth reaching into my bag for my linemans. The box opener is awesome, agreed. I have found that it is very good as a hawkbill replacement for taking the sheathing off Romex wire. That was the biggest reason I carried a hawkbill for years. The flat head is a bit too thick for me. It's fine for a lot of things, but the screws on wall plates have a thinner slot. I will be grinding that thinner. Have not tried the Phillips yet. The file seems to be holding up well. I've used it a lot and it cuts well. I do wish the cutters ran both ways so it did. Not try to run off to one side, but that is not a big issue. Longer would be very nice, but not at the expense of making the tool bigger. The can opener/wire stripper I have not used. I use the knife for stripping wires when I do not have my wire strippers on me and have been very happy with that performance. I did spend about 1.5 hrs the day I got it, while driving, just opening it one handed, working the pliers, and closing it repeatedly. The pliers nearly fall open now and the whole mechanism is very comfortable. This did reveal a small issue with some of the edges of the tool being a bit harsh after repeated use. When I got home I took a file and broke all the edges and in that regard it is now very comfortable. Given the price point it would be nice if that were already done. All in all, I love the Rev for what I do! I am also very concious of the size and weight of each item I carry because I carry a lot of things in my pockets. For me, the Rev is nearly a perfect solution and I would recommend them to anyone who has historically stayed away from multi-tools for the same reasons I have.

I'm pretty sure that, as an electrician, you'd get a lot of use out of the Rebar, which is a mid-size, mid-price Leatherman with a good selection of screwdrivers, an option to add a bit driver, a wire stripper, a crimper, replaceable wire cutters and needle-nose pliers which can be used for reaming out PVC conduit. But of course, a multi-tool isn't compulsory!

I a mechanic for 35 years been carrying a leatherman since early 90s when I bought one on tool truck. I was at academy sports few years ago and they had a rack of Rev on clearance for 15 bucks I bought 5 one for me and gave my son's one. It's a great leatherman for me I have plenty of tools in my box but if I am under a dash and need to pull a fuse or cut a wire , open a package, or can of soup at lunch it nice to have. It's light has a pocket clip and not much bigger then a folder. When I am working around the farm I carry a Surge and when shooting a mut ( just bought a mut for my daughter who is going into the Army ). Can't say enough about leatherman and I do love tools.lol

The best feature of Rev is the screwed bolsters which permit adjusting tightness and disassembly for cleaning and lubrication. Otherwise I'm glad mine was free. The 300 EOD is my favorite multi and I've used a wide variety over many years. Multitools are like condoms, parachutes and jumper cables. When you need them you need the best available.

Although the rev has its problems, I think it's still an awesome tool, perfect for a light hike or a jog. Should it be one handed opening? Yes. Should it be cheaper? Yes. The wire cutters and pliers are superior imo as well.

I impulsed buy this at costco, $39.99, included was a Leatherman CS. I've only had 2 very minimal multitools prior, which are the Victorinox Pioneer and a Leatherman Skeletool Cx. I have not had to use the Rev very much but for a very similar size to the Skeletool, I quite like it.

I picked up a used Rev with a broken pocket clip for $15. It was a good enough price to add it to my collection. For me, the Wingman is a nice step up. The Rev really only makes sense as a really affordable tool.

I think the price was really great for as a starter multi tool when it first came out. Over time the price has continued to creep up to the point that I no longer consider it worth it. It would still be fantastic if it were around the $35 price range.

You mean too little for too much lol. I remember when the Rev first dropped it was $23 at Lowe's. I bought one then gave it away a short time later, because it was inexpensive. Great tool for a great price point... That was until Leatherman started gouging it's customers & ridiculously overpricing their tools!

These are sold at Home Depot. (Or at least were.) I was lucky enough to find mine, 2 years ago on the clearance shelf. They had a clip strip of 6 of them, for $7 a piece. I bought all 6. At that price point I cant complain at all. Except for 2 things. I wish it had a scissors. And the pocket clip became loose on all of them. However, do to it being pocket friendly weight, I find myself grabbing the Rev over my Wave almost every time. Also, Im not a big fan of bit drivers, screw drivers, files, or pry tools on multitools. I feel those kinds of tools are never done correctly in a folding platform. I dont need them on my Rev. Plus I really like the box opener tool. Saves the blade from the mastic of box tape.

Leatherman made the wingman as their budget multitool at 29 dollars The sidekick was the next in line at 39 dollars. Then I stopped seeing the wingman anywhere I shopped and the sidekick was the entry level multitool 39 dollars. Then the wingman returned at 49 dollars . Then they introduced the rev as their entry level. I just bought two rev multitool for 17.87 on clearance. I also bought a surge on sale and was very disappointed to find the surge doesnt have spring loaded pliers .

Hi; In Australia, this is still on the Leatherman Australia website, but at the exorbitant cost of $89.95 AUD. I found a few at a hardware outlet a couple of years ago and bought a few as starters for my kids at $49.95 AUD. I’m ok with it at that price, but not more. It is possible to one-hand open the knife with practice. Thank you for your reviews.

Hello, Ben - good review - I bought my Rev in Home Depot a few years ago for $20-$21 and change...a great price...I like it because it has a pocket clip( a big reason why I bought it), package opener (yes!) and a great, non-assisted plier head and cutters...the blade is super sharp and I don't mind opening it with both hands...I have other Leatherman tools, but this is great if I am out and about and want to go light with it and a dedicated folder...I wish Leatherman would make a Rev ll( with scissors)..to cover that base, I'll also carry a SwissCard. If I carry another tool, I'll have the Rev in my bag for that package opener capability... I don't care for the Wingman or the Sidekick as they are spring - assisted and the Sidekick has no package opener. I hope the Bond and Curl will replace them as entry - level tools to the Leatherman line - up and keep the Rev (Rev II) with scissors...All hopefully at a decent price point...While I agree with your points concerning price vs. product, I see the Rev treated as the "runt" of the litter and feel it is underrated...I think many folks want to use it as a Wave or other substantial tool when it is really designed as a light to medium use tool which can be used more strenuously in a pinch...What do you think?

I received the REV today, currently it's available both on Leatherman shop & Amazon for €59. Compared with my SIGNAL it feels cheap in my hands. I agree with Ben: the package opener is its only highlight. Not sure if I will return it - for half the price you get a (imho) better tool from Biburry...

Rev, Wingman, and Sidekick leave me unimpressed. And with the price increase, they're not really budget tools anymore. At least the Rev has better wire-cutters, plain edge blade, and the package opener. You could buy the Wingman package separately and put it in a Rebar. Much better ergonomics too. A shame it does not come with a pocket-clip. The size and shape are perfect for pocket carry.

I like it because it weights only 168g. Bond with a pocket clip is just 1 gram heavier with more tools (169g), but does not have a locking blade. The Rev IMHO is not so bad. On the other hand the Bolster seems a better choice with the same weight and similar features.

The flat Phillips head deforms easily, to the point where it won't readily catch the screw head anymore. Weak metal. That's why I stopped using the Rev. Didn't buy the Wingman, either, because it has the same screwdriver. Had to step up to the Rebar for a decent Phillips head.
