I don’t leave home without my signal,bit kits and bit extension. I’m the two years I’ve owned them, they’ve served me very, very well. I may not use the whistle/fero rod, but it’s nice knowing I have them, if ever needed. My all time favorite multitool right here

I've been carrying mine every day since I got it. It's quickly become my favorite Leatherman. The combo edge is a big plus on this tool. When I get an opportunity to shoot my video review of it I'll demonstrate precisely why.

I wish they had maintained the MUT design by replacing the removable punch with a removable 3/16" ferro rod and then replacing the carbon scraper with with a removable round aluminum whistle embedded with medium grit diamond powder for sharpening, could even be sized optimally for the serrations, though I don't care for them much. Doing it this way leaves us with a sweet survival aid that also has bonus rescue and weapon maintenance/sight/optics capabilities.

+Cody Brister, I EDC the signal (almost everyday) and I often think about what features I would swap. I never thought about what you said, It would have been a very easy way for them to do the ferro rod and sharpener. The major difference that I see is that the mutt, wave, charge, etc. all have 4 outside accessible tools while the Signal only has 2. I am guessing they did this to make the tool a lot lighter since it is for backpacking and such.

Used leatherman multi tools for years they are great,reliable strong and practical. The after service is fantastic even in UK had a saw blade break on me,my fault,was replaced no questions asked free of charge.Just recently broke eye glass screwdriver,rang service in UK,Whitby and Co, explained the problem they sent me three free. Can't get better service than that,keep up the good work leatherman..

they should include a pocket clip with every tool they got. I like it better than having an extra pouch on my belt or having it sliding to the bottom of my pocket horizontally.

Thanks for doing such a nice review. I've been carrying an original Leatherman Multi-tool in my flight bag for years primarily because of the way the screw drivers worked and due to the built in wire cutter. Fixing mechanical issues is necessary once in a while with a plane and carrying around a tool box filled with all the things you need is ridiculous when a single tool will do the job. The combination of those critical repair tools with better survival tools is definitely worth any backwoods pilot taking a serious look. Now... I just have to figure out what to do with the original Leatherman. BTW - I love the PS4 too. Fantastic for every day carry.

Very first time I saw this multi-tool, I thought it was a gimmick. Looking at it again, I think I would be a good multi-tool for the outdoors. Though the whistle, flint, and sharpener I'd classify as emergency backups to dedicated versions of those three items mentioned above. I hope the whistle/flint combo can be purchased separately if lost or if the flint gets used up over time.
@NGMonocrom
@NGMonocrom 8 жыл бұрын
Okay, ended up buying it. The hard wire cutters, sharpener, and the whistle/flint tools are replaceable on Leatherman's site. Is it a bit gimmicky? Yes. I'm sorry, but yes. Not so much the sharpener, but the whistle/flint combo. Honestly, I like it overall. But there are a couple of issues. Practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more blowing that whistle because otherwise it won't work for you 100% of the time. The opening for your mouth is too tiny The sewing awl fits into a groove on the side of the built-in carabiner. So, yes, you can use it with the handles closed up. Not so the can-opener or the drivers. With the drivers, it's the same issue as on the Skeletool. You can use the drivers, but that arm will have to remain extended. Thankfully the can-opener along with the other tools locks into place because you're going to be using that tool with the extended arm as well. The one-hand opening hole for the knife blade is rather rough cut. If you don't absolutely need to open it one-handed, yeah; use two hands. The saw is a pain in the butt to open. It really is. Would have been much better if Leatherman had cut a hole in the saw along with the knife blade. And get used to using the latch to constantly lock and unlock the handles because they simply will not stay closed on their own. Plus side being, for those who own a SOG multi-tool you'll understand this next part, yes; you can flip the Signal open with one hand to get to the pliers. That last bit of take-up being satisfyingly stiff though. Weight is spot on. You can carry it clipped to a pants pocket without any huge sag (except a pair of thin dress-pants. But that's to be expected). Speaking of the clip though, it slips in and out the pocket a bit too easily. But not surprising with a nearly straight clip. Needs a bit more tension. Overall, I like mine despite all the minor issues. Perhaps Leatherman will release a Signal 2.0 in which all those nagging details are fixed. As an outdoor specific multi-tool, it's a good one. Not great. But quite good. Ironically, it also makes a better-than-average EDC full-size multi-tool. Especially if you don't like wearing belt pouches on your person and getting mistaken for Batman. Yes, it is a bit over-priced for what you ultimately get. But no one else out there literally makes a multi-tool for the outdoors. I don't regret buying mine.

I like the Signal, and agree it's about time they add a survival multi-tool for camping. However my multi-tool of choice for camping is the Leatherman Wave, with a small mod adding the serrated knife with gut-hook from TxToolCrafters and an extra $4 Magnesium Fire Starter ferrous strip from amazon that fits nicely in the leather case that came with my Wave. Its the ultimate tool for me and my camping/hunting situations.

It has some good points. The fact that is that light has a weight advantage. But it is not a ''heavy duty'' survival tool. It has some ''survival'' features, but they are so small that they have ''small'' function too. Our survival bags are so full of everything that it is strange that you might need a silly whistle or a tiny sharpening rod. If you found yourself in a desert with just this tool and nothing else, then yes it might do something. We buy a lot of survival stuff, but i don't think that this life or death situation happens so often... If this leatherman was at the price point of a skeletool, then it would worth a shot. But as it is, it is just a marketing trick...

Im a charge TTI guy myself. I hate combo edges and the s30v blade rocks. I use the bits almost every day and have the extra bits and extension. I do wish they had the 154cm wire cutters though. The signal seems a little gimmicky to me. I have a go bag in my trunk with a good ferro rod and sharpening kit.

Update: Okay, been EDCing this tool since I first got it just over 6 months ago. And I mean everyday. Only today did it get displaced from my pants pocket. I still stand behind my earlier comments when I initially got it. So why is it now no longer in the pocket of my cargo pants?.... Weight! I'm sorry, but 7.5 ounces is just too heavy for a clip-carried multi-tool, with such an inferior clip. For a first effort, it was very good. (And I mean the multi-tool overall.) But for a Leatherman tool costing a C-note, you'd expect the clip to be better (stronger) than what you get on a Leatherman Rev ($30 budget model). Ironically, it's not! I can live with the 420 steel used on the knife blade. (Let's be honest, really should be 154CM at that price.) But a flimsy clip that is clearly inferior to their budget offering?? Come on, Leatherman. You're better than this. So over the course of the last couple of weeks, the clip on my Signal has loosened a bit. Not a lot. Not remotely that much. It doesn't wobble. But loosened enough that the tool now sometimes tumbles out of my pocket, onto the concrete ground when I get out of my car. Something it NEVER did before. And since I wear it on my right side, no; it's not snagging or getting caught on anything. I've decided I need something with a better clip and lighter weight. It's far from ideal, but for now I'm going with the Leatherman Rev based on its superior clip, lighter weight (Yes, 1.5 ounces really makes a significant difference when it's a clip-carried multi-tool and it's 7.5 ounces vs. 6.) I still recommend the Signal as a dedicated outdoor multi-tool or one to toss in your BOB. But daily EDC, Leatherman needs to improve the clip; and find some way to lighten the design. Perhaps eliminating the carabiner/bottle-opener/far-from-ideal-hammer-for-pounding-in-tent-stakes.

Great camera-work! The sharpener and ferro rod are good ideas, but implementation is iffy. The can opener has always opened bottles just fine. There's no need for the large pommel (do you really want to be banging away with your only survival tool? Use the saw and cut yourself a baton or look for a rock), or carabiner, since there's already a clip. This could be lighter still. Main large smooth blade, saw, file, awl, can/bottle opener, and bit driver, or possibly a full serrated blade. They know well what we want, they just don't want to offer it in one package for the sake of selling multiple tools.

I love and hate my old signal. I love the tool set. I'm not a fan of the combi blade although I do see its value if you need to cut through textiles or rope quick. 😅 I've been looking around for something new (cause I'm stupid for collecting Leathermans for some reason) and I see the Signal now comes in a Varity of colors. Which I love cause I'm getting so tired of black knives. I'm also not really a fan of the new Leatherman magnetic opening knives/tools like I thought I would. I just looked this review up randomly in my search seeing if there was something else out there. And It reminded me of why I like my Signal and Skeletool. So I think I'm going to donate my old Signal and my MUT to my brother who is an RCMP officer and thinks his 40 buck gerber is the cats ass. Maybe it is but maybe I can convert him too. 😂 Especial since Colt? Ar-15 are in allot of the trunks of their squad cars now. The Mut needs some parts replaced (I broke the punch and scraper). So I think I'll get a Signal in red with blacked out hardware but mod the knife since I'll probably be getting parts anyways. 😅 I think I'll pick up a blacked out regular Leatherman knife "blank" on ebay and replace that combi blade. Its the only thing I don't like on the MUT and Signal but my brother likes combi blades for the same reasons I mentioned above. So in a weird way thanks for the review!😅

Also that sharpener on the Signal is great for putting a working edge back on leatherman combi blades. So maybe my brother will actually sharpen his stuff properly from now on himself instead of paying someone.

Id rather a wave/surge with solid fire steel rod like gobspark over this thing. I doubt that stupid whistle could scare a deer away. Besides in a survival situation we know that detachable thing would get lost in the weeds. Surge is huge compared to the wave but it includes real scissors on the outside deployment.

Don't buy new. I've bought all except my Leatherman Wave used and saved a good 50% off new price and got practically new tools and I've go at least a couple dozen different Leatherman tools still missing quite a few retired tools and some of the new tools, but I wait until I find them for the right price. I got my MUT and MUT EOD for $65 each compared to $160+ retail. The new Leatherman Waves are $90, and I thought back when I bought my Leatherman PST at $30 I was paying a lot of money then. Even the retired tools have ridiculous prices attached to them, my Leatherman Mini was $49.95 2nd hand....but they don't make that tool anymore probably at least 10 years ago they stopped making the mini?

This has to be the first Leatherman that I'd have absolutely no interest in owning. Combo edge chisel ground main blade, no secondary blade, ferro rod too small for regular use, diamond sharpener too small to use effectively, and personally I don't care for plastic on my Leathermans. Different strokes for different folks. I'll stick with my C2 Juice, Supertool 200 and Supertool 300.

My "problem" with multitools when camping is that I already usually have proper tools with me anyway: an axe/machete for cutting trees and bushes, a saw for sawing, fire tools etc. This is too much of a toy. I could put a multitool in my car for "just in case", for longer hikes when I wan't to keep my gear light or in my messenger bag when I'm at work.

For our purposes I kind of wish they made it smaller, like juice size. Love Leatherman but disappointed in this 'car camper multi-tool'. Thanks for the look.

I feel the cork screw on a multi tool is a waste of space. i am sure some people may take wine out camping but they are probably few and far between.

Yo. I'm looking everywhere for an answer here. HOW DO YOU CLOSE THE CAN OPENER? I just got one and it's stuck in the open position.

Depress the lock lever, or open one of the adjacent tools. That should release it.

Yeah I think i'm going to pass on this one. Neat for a backup in a get home bag or something but if you are hiking you are going to want a real knife and if you need a saw one of those big, super light, fold out saws.. those things will rip through anything in seconds and are probably lighter than this knife.

Not real impressed. They don't have a way to replace the striker rod after its wore out. I'll stick with the other multitools.

@KillSocialism
@KillSocialism 8 жыл бұрын
marshalllaw123 Well, even if they do I'd rather still use another multitool. For the fact that the feral rod is taking up a spot that another useful tool could use. A feral rod should be included in any survival kit and you should have extras stored in your house and car. Then on top of that you should have other means of starting fire such as Bic lighters, magnifying glass, etc.

+John Dohe I think the point of the signal is a last ditch tool where if you only had this ONE thing, it could get you out of the situation alive. Trust me, I'm all for being prepared at all times and I always tend to have a backup, but nothing is better than making it a habit of carrying a tool like this and adjusting your EDC set up to accommodate this. It's always great to have an extensive and basic survival kit that you can get to when you need it, but I don't know many people who carry one of those around with at all times, like this tool could be.
@KillSocialism

Eric Glidden This is a multi tool you put in your vehicle/pack and forget about. Which for what they cost is quite a bit just to have and not put to any use.
@ericglidden5207
@ericglidden5207 8 жыл бұрын
+John Dohe yeah, if you're gonna put it in your pack then you should definitely have other options that are built for what you need them to do, instead of an all around tool that makes sacrifices just for the sake of being able to do everything. It's still a cool concept and I'm glad leather an is being innovative and creative with their tools

i know nothing about survival except for the fact this would be crap for it. Really, as a gardener this truelly has the right tools for me, but as survival tool the loose parts are way to gimmicky, it should all be steel and not have plastic at all, it should have a regular knife and it could instead rather use overall more steel to have a sturdier design. Really, even among leatherman options in the multitool department, there are better options for survival then this.

It is smaller than the Mut but cheap plastik parts. When you open the pliers in the woods you will lose the fire steel and the pipe. Don't bet your life on this.
@ViceCommando

Not good enough for the prize. The whistle isn't good enough if you need it and too hard to get out. Just try to blow in it while in the water. Also looks like a cheap plastic, easy to lost and no way to attach it to the tool with a string. The rod might come in handy, but other than that I just cannot see how this is better than any other multitool in outdoor survival situation. Bush crafters might like this, dunno.
