Preparedmind101 finally decides to purchase a new multitool and chooses the Leatherman Signal. Billed as a wilderness survival multitool, I try to determine if is it worth the hype.

I realize that not everything that glitters is gold, but this Signal is a thing of beauty. I play with (think: fondle) this multi-tool almost daily. I just can't keep my hands off the darn thing!

I took my Signal out and did a solo survival weekend with nothing but the Signal and had no issues doing anything I needed to do. I was able to start a fire in a single strike (after removing the black coating from the ferro rod of course) using fat wood, built a decent shelter with the saw, the knife did excellent gutting a squirrel and carving tinder, and the pommel did a great job crushing nuts. There are a few features I would change but overall this is a great tool

I believe the back of the saw is meant to be used with the firesteel. It's got a very sharp spine that is also useful for scraping wood and other materials to get easy to light tinder.

Was glad to see a review on this. I bought the Surge Tti a few weeks ago after painfully trying to decide what to get - from MEC -- the Membership based Co Op here in Canada like REI there. I was glad to see some of the things on this addressed we all wonder about, thanks a lot, good to know!!

Seriously Chris, you have a review for everything I am interested in! I currently EDC a Leatherman Wingman and I was on the fence with this, I am an avid camper and the thought of having something in my pocket at all times that just "might" get me through a rough patch while out in the bush just appeals to my sense of well being. If I head out for a serious hike I have the Drago Gear Ambi Shoulder Pack with everything I need in it to survive in the wilderness BUT if I am just out and about and I have left my pack at base-camp I want to feel that I have something on my body that can cover the basics. Your review is honest and straight forward as always and you have sold me (also saw the 2016 EDC Essentials Part 1). I have also subscribed to your channel, a wealth of information thank you !

Long time lurker/fan here, PM101. I am a Leatherman multi-tool user from way back...Before I was even into preparedness like I am now. Which actually works out because my bug out bag has a Charge in it, my EDC/Get home bag has a Wave, my Work/EDC pouch has a Wingman (so if I lose it, not so many tears) and my always-in-my-Jeep bag has an original Leatherman. Now, thanks to your video, I really want a Signal. That thing is dang sexy IMO. And it's sexiness serves a purpose. Whip that out a party to open up a brew, or use it at work to fix something, and people will take notice...Which gives you the perfect opportunity to break the ice with them about preparedness. I think everyone should be prepared, but unfortunately not everyone knows it...Anywho, great vid! Liked and subbed. Oh, and the fairly useless hex wrench hole on the bottle opener/carabiner could be the perfect place for a lanyard...

A lot of people call this multitool a gimmick, but it's actually a really good edc tool that actually works to have as a backup to all your primary hiking/camping gears. It's really a great pocket friendly survival multitool. I really like this tool a lot.

Great review. As an X butcher back in the day. I like the fact that that the main blade has a good thickness to it and as you say sharp as. I bought one for camping and fishing. You can catch your fish and cut it up and cook it from the one knife. Regards from Australia hope this finds the readers well.

When this tool was introduced I didn't want anything to do with it. After watching your video earlier this summer I decided to give it a try. The Signal has over time become my most carried multitool because it is light weight for such a robust tool. It will not replace my Surge but it is better for EDC. The biggest problem with the tool is the blade. 420 doesn't hold an edge that well and I hate partially serrated blades. I ended up making my own replacement blade out of O1 tool steel. It holds a superior edge and extends the fire making ability (flint and steel). There is a video of it on my channel.
@preparedmind101

+Last Chance Knives I didn't want to either. It grew on me. The blade is a backup cutter to me. But the Worksharp makes it sharp easily. I don't use it for excessive cutting.

Without the combo edge and with a pair of scissors I would definitely buy this. It is a perfect candidate for a pair of scissors and it would fit the outdoor/emergency/prepper niche nicely with it. I hope they make an upgraded version in the years to come.

Stuff some tinder quick on the hex hole :) Wild shot in the dark can you take the scissors off of the surge and put it in the signal. To be honest i would like to see a basic leatheman bodies heavy/medium/light that you can pick and mix the tools you need, will not happen as it makes sense but what the hey. It's alright, but I'm still going to stay with my Charge TTi & my Surge, especially for the money. I do agree with you about the 'Wave 2.0' with replaceable cutter blades. Replacing the useless 'large screwdriver' with an awl would also be a very, very nice upgrade! Seriously, you've got two bit drivers on it already. What the hell do you need with another screwdriver?! If you're listening Leatherman, dump the screwdriver and add an awl and replaceable cutter jaws. That would make the Charge AL, Charge TTi & Wave multi-tools pretty much the perfect outdoor/survival/EDC tools!
@norwoodzomboy
@norwoodzomboy 8 жыл бұрын
I would have prefered that Leatherman created a 'Survival Expansion Kit' which featured a ferro rod and knife sharpener, which could be swapped in like the detachable blades, such as in the Surge. This would give more user friendly lengths of 3 inches. That and a small steel whistle which could connect to the lanyard ring. My two cents.

I always end up going back to my original leatherman, other than the cutters none of the new ones really have anything id really need or want. Id like a scaled down surge, like you said a surge two point O is needed. I gotta wonder how many uses you can actually get out of that ferro rod?

Oh look! Leatherman teamed up with BUDK to create an ultimate survival tool! (not) Surge for me. It swings both ways for both wilderness use and urban work (like, literally in my trade). I've made bow drill sets and One Stick Fires with my Surge. Leatherman knives and scissors are the bomb. I carry a 5X1/2" rod "in" the Surge's MOLLE sheath. If I've lost my rod, I've lost my Leatherman too. I'd never use the integrated clip on a multitool. Too many small parts that can get lost. Plastic parts? Nah. It reminds me of one of those all-in-one survival whistles with the compass, match case, mirror, yada yada yada. I agree that Leatherman should come out with a wilderness survival related multitool, but in a significantly lighter weight like the Wave. Maybe that Wave upgrade would be the ticket. And maybe next time, they should consult guys who use their tools in the field instead of Gerber when they design something survival-related. JM2¢

Maybe a surge with a lighter body...aluminum with cut outs like this one and orange. Cabelas has an exclusive orange Wave, so they can do it. Lose stuff like "large flathead screwdriver" when it already has a screwdriver in it and add something like the field dressing scalpel I described.
@YankeeWoodcraft
@YankeeWoodcraft 8 жыл бұрын
I'm with you on that. Make it hunter/fisherman friendly (hook remover along with a replaceable scalpel?). OH! And some firearms servicing bits permanently mounted in place of the Home DIY bits. As for colors? I'd prefer a completely matte finish so that it won't reflect off the sun and possibly spook game if it was being used.

Now that I understand what this tool can actually do I think I'm in the "not for me" group. Mostly because I usually don't carry any multi tool into the woods anyway and when I do carry one it's for more urban type use which this one kinda lacks in that area. Nice job Chris.

Idk the surge had the diamond file!!! Im gonna have to look into it... I got the Wave because of Will...but the signal needs a bottle opener... Yeah you'll need a can opener before a bottle opener in a survival sitch... But for edc and as a beefy screwdriver and a light pry tool the bottle opener comes in hand more often than the can opener.

+John K. Eich Bushcraft. I don't know. I prefer cans 'in the field' to bottles. Much lighter. Also, you can easily pry off a bottle cap with the pliers or even just the edge of the frame (and look more bad@$$ at the same time). I don't have a come-back on your beefy screw driver point though... that is a good one.

I agree it would be awesome to have the removable wire cutters on the wave or in my case the charge. The problem is they would have to either redesign the plier head or the tool layout. I modded a charge I had and installed the plier head off of a rebar. I didn't want to give up any tools so I had to reshape the plierhead to fit. The end result looked really good, but it eventually failed on me (7 months later) and I broke the the plier head. In hindsight that may have been my fault, but maybe not. Either way it's an awesome idea. As for the signal, I'm gonna pass.....

I'm sure it does what it's supposed to, but not one for me I'm afraid. Some people may like it as much as you do of course, but I think it's far too pricey for what it is. Maybe if I could get it at the US price I'd consider it ( but probably not tbh). But here in the UK it costs around £125 ( $188 ). I could buy a Juice C2 which would be enough for my day to day needs ( actually, I find my Swisschamp to more than adequate) and have enough left over to buy enough ferro rods, whistles and sharpeners to make sure I always have the things on me.

Interested till saw the serrated blade. Totally ruins it for me. I don’t mind a serrated blade in addition to a straight blade. But I want a straight blade for carving, wood working, building traps. That knobs of stuff. Never had a use for serrations. I also agree. Scissors would have been nice. Also some small tweezers. Nothing worse than being out in the woods and you have a tiny thorn stuck in you.

Nice review but I am not sold. I am sticking with wave /surge. I don't need another leather man until they make a surge that can have both the file and saw at the same time.

Don't get me wrong, if they wanted to send me one for review, damn right I'll take it and tell you what I like, and what I don't. But sometimes you gotta throw some different stuff in to mix things up, and if that means you gotta buy it, you gotta buy it. I definitely didn't NEED it.

I hope Leatherman will revamp their marketing of this tool. I was able to get it on sale for ~$80, which was just low enough for me to pull the trigger. If you're carrying a regular load-out of gear, the Signal's design compromises aren't worth it. However, if you're engaging in outdoor endeavors where keeping down weight and maintaining physical maneuverability are important (e.g., rock climbing, kayaking, rough terrain day hikes) and you're not expecting but could potentially end up in survival situations, I think it's a great option.

+MinstrelOnTheRun Good use case, I hadn't thought of that. Mountain biking too. Oops, I just thumbs'd up somebody that called it a gimmicky joke... now where was that guy, I gotta thumbs down him now.

When it comes to multi-tools I don't like any loose parts, i.e. drivers, whistles, etc. Just my humble opinion.

I'll pass as well. $99 seems a little pricey for what its lacking.

I fully support made in Canada or America! I rather spend a few bucks more and keep jobs either side of the 49th.
