Leatherman Squirt PS4/ES4: "Thumb-sized Toolchest" by Nutnfancy

It was perfect in almost every way....except one. It didn't have scissors. That was my criticism in my Jul 2008 review video of the otherwise awesome little Leatherman Squirt. It served me with distinction then and became a cherished wingman in my everyday life. Like they sometimes do (and I am glad for it), it has since been retired for the line by Leatherman. But fret not because these new Squirt PS4 and ES4 versions have a major improvement: scissors! They are tiny and precise, reminding me of the also-excellent Swiss Army Classic scissors. These little snips come in handy for a huge variety of everyday tasks; I've even used mine for first aid jobs where they snipped ripped skin away without causing pain. But with these scissors you will lose the impressive little awl (I also call it a punch) and the tiny screwdriver that rode in the previous Squirt. It's a good tradeoff and as I discussed in my vid "Multi-tool Continuum" the designs always call for compromise. Other tools remain unchanged and they function well: file, 420HC flat ground knife blade (still hate the chisel grind they do), Phillips driver, and medium sized flat blade driver. The pliers of the PS4 are unchanged and that is good because for their size, they rock. The Squirts pliers are strong for their size and the jaws close with precision. The provide almost tweezer-like extraction and knot untying capabilities. The ES4 version has precise wire strippers that work and both version have light duty wire cutters that snip flex cuffs, zip ties, small nails, and wire. All tools are easily extracted from the exterior and won't break your fingernails like some other LDMTs out there. Amazingly the build uses T6 Torx screws so this little MT has an open architecture and can be adjusted should the need arise. The weight remains unchanged as at miniscule 2.0 oz and the quality levels throughout remains impressive. Gone is the interesting tool choice of the retired E4 (tweezers, precise drivers, nail file) and the scissors only S4 Squirt version (look to the Leatherman Style for that in 2011). But they will not be missed. The Squirt colors have changed to matte anodizing including colors black, red, and blue with future special editions on the horizon. The contoured aluminum handles provide a good canvas for the vibrance of the new color choices. The Squirt again makes an ideal and thoughtful gift they will be cherished (until it is lost!). For light duty MTing, the Squirt is ready for the call of duty and unlike a lot of bigger MTs out there, you will probably have it on hand when you need it./////////////// Nutnfancy LIkability Scale: 10 out of 10

I've had the PS4 in my EDC for about 4 months now. Before the Squirt, I carried a micra every day. I find this one is a great upgrade for the Micra. My daily grind takes me to a corporate environment where I cant carry a blade or std multitool on me, as I might upset the bid-ness peoples. But the PS4 and its size make it the perfect accessory! I keep it with me on weekends too, but the EDC changes! Great update Nutn!

I've been waiting for this review. I bought the P4 and always complained it didn't have scissors then when leatherman came out with the PS4 about 6 months ago and I have carried it everyday since and absolutely love it!!! I have the blue one and the coating is great but it has started to rub off around the rivets that hold the multi-tool together. Still not a big deal though it just looks used like it has been loved! Fantastic MT, I bought my two brother-in-laws one for christmas too.

I use my Style CS on my keychain all the time. One thing I prefer about that one over those Squirts is that the bottle opener/cap lifter (which you didn't mention) also functions as the quick-release clip, which makes the tool very fast and easy to get to.

i carried a squirt p4 for about 4 years. i recently had to replace it cause I broke it. it failed in the connection of the pliar head to the handle pin. after examining it under the microscope it failed due to fatigue. i do not fault the tool cause i idid come crazy stuff with it. The take away message is this is a great tool.

I have the ES4 and I really like the wire strippers. They are the best manual wire strippers ive ever used - better then stand alone ones. The wire strippers dont cut into the wire - they remove the insulation cleanly. Also, its more durable in person then it looks. Not a cheap plastic, its a heavy, good steel. The scissors are really effective too and work on everything. The pliers at the end too are great and precise. I use it for a lot of little hobby/electronics work. Highly recommended.

Dont forget about the Micra; its slightly larger and like the old s4 it has large scissors as the main tool. I like it better because the inside tools (knife, drivers, cap lifter, file, tweezers) can lock, sort of. Extend the knife blade, close the tool, and the blade wont close on you finger while in use...cool. Ive used scissors more often than a blade anyway. The tweezers are useful too.

First it was guns,,, next it was flashlights,,, then came Kershaw knives,,, now it's Leatherman multi-tools... In the past week I've bought two Micra's,, Wave,, Squirt PS4 in blue,, Sidekick,, Wingman,, Supertool 300,, and today bought another Squirt PS4 in red and also a orange Juice S2... Ended up buying one of these. I carried a leatherman surge for a number of years. But then I didnt need all the weight or the tools and went back to a knife. Naturally after a while, I needed some of those tools and a knife edge that I'm willing to "ruin" should the need arise. I was using a old bundeswehr SAK but it really wasn't doing it for me (especially in the pliers and scissors department) so I went back to looking at Leatherman....and boom, here comes this and gerber. But I avoid gerber on principal (and that they're within 5 bucks of each other)

My POU for the Squirt PS4: I have relegated my PS4 to my Level 1 FAK used in wilderness settings. As a medic I have many FAK's from basic to squad level kits. While one doesn't expect to have to suture a laceration very often, I have found the pliers for PS4 to be a more than adequate needle driver for suturing wounds. Then you have the scissors to trim the tags on your suture. Very handy because you can have both the pliers and scissors open at the same time. Handy as a suture instrument.

@mbarkn Also, the wire cutters on the pliers can be used if you need to snip the barb off of an embedded fish hook. While I do have dedicated surgical instruments for proper suturing in various kits, it's a skill not needed on a regular basis and for my back country first aid kits, I found the Squirt PS4 to fit the needs nicely. (using the pliers on larger MT's for suture needles tends to chew them up too much and then you have sharp little barbs causing tissue damage.) The PS4 works well.

@edcitems Not quite. There were two "pairs" of tools. The Gerber Clutch (pliers) and Shortcut (scissors), and the Gerber Vise (pliers) and Splice (scissors). They had the same secondary tool loadout between the different pairs, just different primary tools. Decent MTs, but the steel straight up stunk in terms of edge retention - even Leatherman's 420HC ran circles around it.

Is the thickness the same as the P4/S4? When I heard of the PS4, I thought it sounded cool except with the added tools it might be really thick (like the Juice XE6 is thick due to additions over the S2). I guess if the weight is the same it probably is, I have a Micra, which is like a Squirt S4 but no external tools. But with that it can have a little bit longer drivers, although seeing the file on the PS4 makes me wish the Micra had that file.

Great review as usual man. I wish Leatherman made a larger version of the Squirt series with 3 layers of tools, instead of 2. Sort of the Juice XE6 equivalent as oopposed to the CS4. I know, it would be a bit heavier, but it could carry tweezers, and an awl on one side, and maybe a tool like the victorinox "orange peeler" on the other. They should also magnetize the screwdrivers. What do you people think, would such an MT make sense?

I love my squirt! I tracked down an S4 because I'd rather have bigger scissors than pliers. The little tweezer that slips out is the best thing in a micro multi-tool since sliced processed cheese. I like the PS4 but wow, those scissors are tiny. When I carry a juice, I gotta have my CS4 (corkscrew is a must...what can I say, life in a post-apocalyptic world without being able to drink wine just wouldn't be worth living!). But the squirt is so tiny it goes with me without even noticing it.

In the UK, Ireland, Australia, S. Africa, etc., "fanny" is a slang term for a woman's vulva. And it's a very well known term in those places. So "fanny pack" sounds very dirty, lol.

Cap lifter is too small for beer. Works, but you have to really work it into the flairs on the cap, using several lifts, to finally open your delicious beverage. I just use the flat wide part of the tool as a pry lifter using the same concept as opening a beer with a Bic lighter. Hard on the finish (who cares) but works great. Other than that, I LOVE the PS4. Been hammering on every tool but the file around the lab for a few months. No complaints. Still OEM tight with exquisite tool "snick".

Bought the PS4 after ColinOutdoors reviewed it. I love carrying it in my dress pants cuz its so small. The drivers get used constantly The knife occasionally due to my carrying of the Skyline. Pliers never get used cuz they really are too small. Scissors are really small too. File used often mostly on my fingernails honestly when I snag an edge on something. It is convenience of carry and ability in case of need that I like.

Great review!! I wish Leatherman offered a "PS6" and "ES6", with an extra layer for tools, to incllude the tweezers and punch on one side, and something like the "orange peeler" on Victorinox's Minichamp on the other. I wonder if it could be possible to have a locking mechanism in such a small MT. It would be nice if they offered a version made of better materials.

Sure it is a bit more limited in overall capabilities than the Juice or anything else larger, but I'm honestly not going to EDC something bigger than the Squirt (not in a pants pocket, at least), and what good is a MT that you aren't going to carry? I just cant see myself getting much use out of a MT this size. The tool set is so small I just cant think of any time within the last few years where it would have come in handy to have it on my person. I think I would get more use out of a swiss army knife. The squirt is better than nothing but I think the juice is the smallest I would go.
