Highlights of the original and previously unaired pilot for Leave it to Beaver, called "It's a Small World" and featuring different actors in roles of Ward and Wally, and Harry Shearer as an Eddie Haskell-type smart-aleck, and Richard Deacon (Mr. Rutherford) and Diane Brewster (Miss Canfield) as different characters, was teased on Entertainment Tonight and then shown for the first time as the first episode of the 1987 season of The New Leave it to Beaver on TBS Superstation October 4th, with an introduction by Jerry Mathers, Tony Dow, Barbara Billinglsey, and Kipp Marcus (Beaver, Wally, June, and Kipp Cleaver).

casey adams, aka Max Showalter, played tuesday weld's dad in the classic '66 film "lord love a duck." the scene where he watches weld try on a bunch of different cashmere sweaters is hilarious! (the whole movie is just great. one of my favorites.) he has one of those great laughs that make you laugh. he has about 1000 movie and tv credits. little known fact: they were going rename "its a small world" to - "look, its gopher boy!" but the producer owned a beaver farm (otherwise known as a "cat-house.") in upstate wisconsin so they renamed it "leave it to beaver" for the free advertising. and the rest is beaver history.

A little exposure for Rob Weller, long-time host of "Entertainment Tonight" and "Entertainment This Week" at the beginning of the clip. I was at a college football game where Weller returned as an alumni yell leader and one of his bits was responsible for popularizing the "The Wave" in the early 80's.

I like Tony Dow but the original Wally seemed like a good fit. The father on the other hand was definitely not Ward Cleaver. Frankie was good. I'm surprised they didn't look him up when casting for.Eddie Haskell. Maybe the biggest difference between Frankie and Eddie was on the inside Eddie was really a good guy and that came through on the show. Frankie seemed more like a trouble maker.

Thanks for the analysis. In your opinion, what made Ken Osmond's portrayal of Eddie Haskell so great? Was it Osmond's acting, better writing than that of the pilot, or was it better direction?

That's the wrong house exterior shot here at the end. That was used in later versions of the show. The original Cleaver house had an entry stage right with stairs stage left. Living room with easy chair is visible when the camera backs up. This other set was used later and featured entry stage left with stairs stage right. Ward's den/library/office was left of the entry (where a print of Thomas Gainsborough's "Blue Boy" hangs inside the front door - check it out). In these later episodes the Cleavers have moved into a larger set, but this is not a real house - it's a shell in a "fake" neighborhood. For Trivia freaks, this is the house (set) used in "The Desperate Hours" with Humphrey Bogart and Frederick March in 1955.

Not wrong -- this was the pilot -- a practice show filmed to see if CBS would buy the concept. CBS and others made all kinds of changes before they decided to buy the show -- changed actors for Wally and Ward, changed characters for Richard Deacon and Diane Brewster, changed name of show from Small World to Leave it to Beaver, and gave them a new set for the house in a new studio

casey adams, aka Max Showalter, played tuesday weld's dad in the classic '66 film "lord love a duck." the scene where he watches weld try on a bunch of different cashmere sweaters is hilarious!

@@georgewashington3012 Yes, certainly well aware of the death of Sue Randall far too young due to a choice she made regarding cigarettes, which was very common then. Well before that she suffered disabling injuries in a car accident that cut her career very short at age 32 in 1967, just four years after Leave it to Beaver ended, but that didn't stop her from working for multiple charities. And she also lived long enough to get married and have two children.
