Leaving No Trace is one of the easiest things to understand about Black Rock City’s culture, but that doesn’t mean we can take it for granted. On the contrary, MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) is on the rise, and if we don’t get a handle on it, it could threaten the continuation of the event.
D.A., manager of Playa Restoration, made this video to educate and rally the troops (read: that’s all of us) on the nature of the MOOP problem and how we can stop it. Watch, learn, and share it far and wide.

I hope you can raise awareness in the new BM generation with the glitter party people who are thinking its just another electronic music festival. Great respect for your work!.

How about not having a massive event in a dry lake bed? What if we instead use the resources it takes to build Black Rock City to eliviate poverty? How about not burning wood for the sake of an arbitrary effigy? How about not having thousands of cars lined up idling releasing emissions in an environment where there's no vegetation to help sequester it? There is a much bigger issue to consider... Consider the fact that the planet is experiencing rapid ecosystem destruction, extreme financial inequality, and is in threat to mass resource scarcity. I support art, but not if it's contributing to pollution. As a former attendee of Burning Man I can attest that there is an elephant in the room that is not being addressed, that is that a large event in a delicate ecosystem should stop.

I don't give a damn about burning man, but this is totally impressive that your out there after the crowds have gone making sure that the ideology of the event is not marred by its refuse. It is sad that the greatest things on this earth are often ruined by their popularity. Good on you.

Let's bring in a truckload of termites to eat all the wood...then a flock of sparrows to eat all the termites....then a hawk to take out all the sparrows. Then we only have to moop one hawk

Well instead of mooping the hawk by hand I can always bring a lion. Then lure it away with a steak dinner from outback

No glitter, no feathers. Then shoulder to shoulder across your camp and pick up everything. Then do it again. Works for 7 Deadly Gins. As for the mess one guy left after he tossed his cookies..ugh...I had to clean/dig it up, bag it, and dispose of properly. Just life on the playa and part of camp responsibilities.

The "Clean-up" is so important to perform effectively if this type of "Gathering" or otherwise, is to continue; otherwise the ecological Cost will be prohibitive. The "Leave only your footprints" concept in everyday Life.

I would like to join an actual environmentally friendly environment. Burning man sounds like so much fun, but I cannot intentionally be a hypocrite by expecting eco-friendly events then attending something that Burns so much diesel, propane, luxury rvs, etc... Just look at the amount of wood and other moop left behind, not taking into account the amount of trash taken away by the attendees.

What about requiring a protective fire-proof layer beneath all wood structures? Kind of like a giant serving tray? Wood structure is constructed/sits on top, gets burned and then the charred remains never touch the earth beneath. Just a thought 🙂

This reminds me of my military days on the flight line .. we called it F.O.D. (foreign object damage) To me MOOP sounds like something the military needs to call it lol

Wouldn't be hard to design a machine that could do all that in a few days. Probably already exists in the farm equipment industry.

I think he is suggesting a vacuum for the wood chips, but that would not work... vac would fill with dust in minutes.

They put down a special layer under the footprint, and then gather all of that up. And everything that is scattered? We pick it up. Every splinter, every cardboard ring from firecrackers, every piece of neon. I'm out there Sunday morning sweeping the area, and I'm not alone.

Well, I can only hope the art project/camp that generated the one gallon bag of wood chips won't be allowed back on the playa for quite some time. PS: who was it?

Reading BLM permit, it appears BM has 26 days to clean up. Will any media think to go out there in a month to check it out, maybe send up a drone?

And yet no one seems willing to address the amount of MOOP left in the atmosphere. How many tons of propane burned? How many hundreds of gallons of gasoline burned in art cars? What is getting pumped into the air every time a wooden structure gets burned? MOOP on the playa is super important but no one talks about the other kinds of invisible MOOP that is left. I totally get how much work you guys do and how important it is but you can't seriously believe that you're leaving no trace. You might be leaving no VISIBLE trace but 80K people are definitely leaving a trace on that delicate environment.
