A family’s vacation is upended when two strangers arrive at night, seeking refuge from a cyberattack that grows more terrifying by the minute, forcing everyone to come to terms with their places in a collapsing world. Leave the World Behind stars Julia Roberts, Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke, Myha'la, and Kevin Bacon. The story is relevant for today, but is it any good? This movie was awful, bad writing, bad acting, no problem solving, blatant racism against whites, unnecessary tension between the characters, some of the shots were good but it was annoying not seeing what the characters were looking at. The idea behind the movie was great, conspiracy, suspense, unknowing, but goodness was the execution awful. Honestly if you took out the characters and just left it to a 15 minute video of the world falling apart due to the grid failing and the misinformation and the unknown cause of the radiation this would’ve been great. I’m absolutely disappointed to see people giving this movie 5/5 reviews it almost seems fake and maybe even paid reviews. Moral of the story: terrible movie I would not recommend

Imagine watching a movie which refences Point Comfort and White Lion. The first slave ship to America and the Place they were bought to and sold. But you are so offended by words. Typical young white lie-on. Weak and fragile😂😂 Psalms 58:6 “Break their teeth, O God, in their mouth: break out the great teeth of the young lions, O LORD.”

I think they do leave the world behind. Ruthie described Friends as a show about a false reality. At the end of the film they leave the false reality the world behind and are forced to live in a new reality. Interesting is that Rosie became aware of things first. She also said, I can't wait (I think) before she left the house and found her last episode.

Not that there couldn't be an interesting way to tackle ideas of how racial tensions would play into a social breakdown scenario, but I felt like the way this movie tried to do that felt very forced, and everything it tried to say about it was kinda cringe. To each their own, I guess.

The references to slavery, in August 1619 enslaved africans landed at Point Comfort. The radio station in the car was 1619 and the signs on the motorway said Point Comfort as a reference. The ship was called White Lion, the first Slave Ship to come to America. Some of the food items in the bunker had a cultural reference: Aunt Jemima, Uncle Bens, Indian Head Corn Meal and Trader Mexican Beer.

Tbh I think this is the weirdest movie I have ever watched. On one side the story is so captivating and draws you in and makes you lose track of time. But on the other side, the story tries extremely hard not to admit it's a basic plot. Several times switch the type of movie it is. 1) Knock on door and spoke to the family have the audience thinking they actually don't own the home they are invaders so you immediately think it's some sort of horror movie. 2) Then the animals all gathering the Spanish woman and the boy being bite by an insect losing his teeth. You start thinking it's a virus. 3) Scene in space that shows the satellite, specifically shot in a way to look like an eclipse, planes falling out the sky. Viewers start think end of the world similar to "Knock at cabin" starring Dave Bautista. 5) No it's just United Staes under attack. With the worse ending ever. I rate it 4/5 for storytelling until the final 30mins. 5/5 for wasting my time with a plot that has nothing to do with animals gathering, eclipse or bug bite = losing teeth.

I watched this last night. I enjoyed it but it didn't need to be a 2 1/2 hr film though. But... There were some pretty inexplicable plot holes and logic gaps. And to be honest, I don't get the Amanda hate. Sure, she was a little pissy and angry, but she was nowhere near as insufferable as Ruth though.
@Tyler_W
@Tyler_W 8 ай бұрын
Gotta personally disagree on this one. This movie blows. The acting was perfectly fine. It was interestingly shot, and I kinda liked the suspenseful music, but a lot of the interpersonal drama felt really forced, and a lot of the social commentary just felt trite. For a good chunk of the middle of this movie, I felt like most of the suspense was coming from the music and shot conposition/framing more than from what was actually happening on screen. Yeah, those are good and effective things to have in order to amplify feelings of suspense, but they should be a compliment to the story, not the source of that suspense. The only time I felt real, prolonged and well earned suspense was when George and Ruth showed up that first night, and we had the whole "are they legit," "can they be trusted" bit and when the three men had their negotiation standoff at the end. (The Open House was another recent dull suspense movie that had a similar problem with unearned suspense imo.) I like plenty of deliberately paced movies that largely involve characters doing little more than talking to each other, but I found myself far more interested in the sociopolitical stuff they were talking about happening off screen than I was interested in what was actually happening in front of me. I think that's probably because all of the characters except those played by Ali and Hawke were were incredibly irritating and not enjoyable or engaging to spend time with. Again, nothing against the performances or the performers, but i frequently felt the urge to yell stfu to the characters played by Roberts and Myha'la in just about every scene they were in. It felt like all of this suspense culminated into pretty much nothing with no real closure to the interpersonal story. That may or not have been the point, but that doesn't mean i have to like it for doing that on purpose. Maybe I would have liked this a little bit better if it was sborter and if it didn't end so abruptly. If you and others genuinely liked it, that's cool, but I just couldn't vibe with this one. As for a movie I saw recently that haunted me, probably the OG Pet Cemetary, The Report with Adam Driver, Killers of the Flower Moon, and especially The Road.

I thought this movie was terrible. Full disclosure, I quit an hour in after reading reviews that confirmed my suspicion that the ending would have no satisfying resolution. I wanted to quit much earlier than that. Everything just felt "off" right from the beginning. I can't explain it. The writing makes me question if the writers have ever met people before. Almost nobody acts like human beings would in real life. The pretentiousness of dividing the film into "parts" is a reflection of the filmmakers' narcissism and delusion. Tarantino can do that. Nobody else can. The children (and I'm including the girl whose tattoo "96" suggests that she's ~27 years old) make me want to not have kids. The cinematography was the only thing it had going for it, but that's a dime a dozen these days. The musical score felt like parody at moments for me. In a sense, it's everything wrong with modern movies. Something is very wrong with cinema these days, and I can't be the only one who is noticing this. Almost everything just feels "off." Like AI, actually (and sadly). A few filmmakers and writers are phenomenal, maybe it's always been like that and we're just getting more movies overall made to a lower standard so the "wheat-to-chaff" ratio is worse?

Although I enjoy cerebral movies, I found this one to be only pretentious. Yes, at first it transmits the sense of mistery very well, but that is soon lost with long dialogues that although dive into the character's personalities, never build into the story. A story which by the way it's really hard to take seriously. Because let's be honest, I think an alien invasion or a supernatural phenomena would be easier to believe than what this story is about. About the characters, only the one played by Julia is more or less developed. The kids are there only as decoration to the point that the viewer cares little what happens to them which is hard to accomplish, in the bad sense of story telling and engaging with the audiences. Ethan's character has evidently been written as a lame, weak of a men and is portrayed as such, but because of that adds so little that nothing would happen if it wasn't there. While the premise had potential for much more social commentary, we are just let with a very shallow critique on how "people sucks" and how pathetic is. And indeed the main characters are all conceived to be so pathetic, that is hard to believe when they behavior takes a 180 degrees turn. I respect all reviews, but honestly I think anything above mediocre will be driven by Julia's charisma, and the nostalgia for a good American movie, that in my opinion is yet to come after more than a year now of terrible cinema

I literally hated each character in this movie and was hpo8ng they would all get picked off 1 by 1. The sub plot of the daughter's obsession with friends was dumb and she held on to it far too long when things were going to shit. Character logic was bordering on moronic, the dialog was very cringe inducing, and the story pacing made me feel lile i would age to death before the movie ended. Instead of leaving the world behind the director should leave film making behind.

About half an hour into the movie. So what I'm seeing is rich, liberal family want to leave their rich homes and spend time holidaying in a rich rental. Owner turns up and Julia plays Karen. May have been more relevant if the owner had been Jewish bearing in mind the obvious discrimination going on. The problem with these virtue-signalling movies is that they are not subtle. As a viewer, you are not allowed to come to your own conclusions and you're hit over the head with several messages that are not realistic and magically do not apply to anyone involved in the film. Not exactly realistic or kitchen sink is it! 1/10 - try again.

Initially I was intrigued by the increasingly bizarre mysteries. As the events went from the strange, to the implausible, to the impossible I concluded that the cause must be one of three things; either some weird quantum physics event, God or aliens. Certainly the posited 'hackers' explanation was quickly dismissed as you cant hack flamingoes and herds of deer. Nobody has the power to take out the cell network, the TV network, radio stations, the power grid, satellites, shipping, mess with the animals and launch microwave and nuclear attacks. Any one of those would be a tall order, but all of them? All at once? No, that defies credulity. At this point, I realized that the film was not meant to be taken literally, but was highly stylized ...in the Bride v The Crazy 88 way is just a metaphor for victory in the face of adversity. All the events of this film don't need to be taken literally and explained individually ...and shouldn't. When that penny drops, the whole film becomes a metaphor and the question becomes, for what? For man being his own worst enemy. For humanity being the architect of it's own destruction. I thought the film tried a bit too hard to be artsy but on the whole I think it pulled it off, managing to stop just short of being a cliche. I thought the performances from all the actors were outstanding, the cinematography was superb and while I don't generally like overtly political 'films with a social message', this won me over because the villain was human nature and none of us are on the 'right side' of that. I'd give it a 4/5. The only reason it doesn't get a 5/5 from me, is because I'm not a fan of try-hard films with a social message and this is definitely one of those.

There are slow burn movies and there are movies like this that are way too long and the end result is 'meh'. None of the characters were relatable or likeable or sympathetic. The odd camera angles were repeated to the point of tedium. The characters were flat. The sound track was cringe, especially the end song. The dialogue was stilted. The plot was a mix of trope and mindless. The scene with Roberts' character and Ruth with the herd of cgi deer was hilariously ridiculous and again way too long. Alot of scenes were unnecessary, Roberts' character driving to the store and the cringe dance scene, for example. . Worst movie of '23

Great review! I'll watch it tonight! Also, to answer your question about any movies that haunt me ??? I recently watched Station Eleven. WOW! I couldn't watch it during the pandemic (ours that is) because it was too close to home. But now that Covid is basically pretty much behind us, I ventured into the Series again. I LOVED it. The character development was stellar, and the story line & how it weaved in and out throughout the series was fascinating. It absolutely captured me. I'm a believer that everything happens for a reason, and this series validated that for me. I absolutely loved it!!!

Are these all Bots commenting? People can't really think this is a good movie. How do I describe how much this movie sucked and made no sense. First people don't act like this like when some weird crazy shit happens they tell people about it they're not just going to not say anything for hours or days. Half the movie didn't even have anything to do with the plot it was just unnecessary drama. And then when they think the apocalypse is going to happen they just get high and get drunk they don't try to hoard resources or find resources or anything. And the ending was so stupid and the part where they were yelling at the deer was hilarious. They're so fragile they're scared by a bunch of deer. Then the little girl is just going to break into a house and watch DVDs LOL. I know Americans are reliant on technology but this is just too absurdly dumb

I hated this movie. The dialogue was absolute garbage. The plot was building and then went completely flat in pace for filler talking. Filler I did not care about at all. I hated the little girl. I didn't know why she was doing anything. She was just weird for the sake of being weird. The music sucked too. Nothing was happening but suspenseful music was going on. Its a lame tactic to keep the audience engaged, becuase nothing happens. And there was that gun stand off scene. That was the absolute worst. It was artificial drama. They freaking battered at the end. WHAT WAS THE POINT OF THE STAND OFF IF THEY WERE JUST GOING TO BARTER ANYWAY?? I want my time back.

Thanks for doing these reviews Chris. But this was objectively just a bad movie. Bunch of unnecessary red herrings just for the sake of throwing stuff into the narrative to make it "interesting". No deep insight into the human condition. Bad script. Unjustified and unrealistic characters and motivations. Basically as predictable as they come. There really was not much good about this movie except for some decent effects and Mahershla Ali being a really good actor. Score too similar to Back to the Future. Zero originality. Just utter garbage. And Julia Roberts is not a particularly good actor as well. The friends thing with the daughter was totally unneccessary and stupid and added nothing to plot. I can go on and on. This was worse than May December and thats saying something. 1/5

This movie and the reaction of many to it reminds of Peter Seller's masterful performance in Being There. Sellers plays the part of a simpleton, but whose simple comments everyone interprets as cryptically expressed brilliance. All these presumably erudite people like Leave the World Behind; it has to be great. I suppose one has to be enlightened to understand its brilliance; so I guess I fell short. The actors may be great, but their performance was anything but. Not a great movie.

This whole movie is trippy. It shows the spiritual war everyone is fighting to keep things the same but at the same time seeing the world change while remaining to keep up. I also see people tormented while the next coming generation processes things more quickly but lack empathy. I also noticed that the mother was more nourishing with the son than the daughter but the daughter was more truth telling.the son was a lot like the father and the older daughter was more like the father who owned the home than she thought. She couldn’t let go. She pointed out everyone’s own selfish motives but not her father. When the time clock went off I’m like guuuurl I hope u made it in that bunk too. LEAVE THE WORLD BEHIND🌚 I also feel like since the pandemic theirs been a secret war and a lot of people showed you who they’re. There’s no going back and I feel that as dramatic as this movie is it’s realistic. The waiting for information and knowing your fate at the same time is what kept this movie suspenseful. Seeing each others flaws as human and remaining stuck in our ways no matter how hard things get. Being disconnected as Animals formed together in flocks. Being distrusting of each race when we’re all in captivity and have no survival skills waiting for a higher power to save us but ignoring all the red flags. I can go on and on about the Mexican lady screaming and all the symbolism but you just have to have an open mind for this type of movie and all the symbolism in this movie. Fate repeats itself like a re-run & the more it does the more you start to see the details. Reality is constantly shifting and the same things we fear become a reality. Only the good.

overall good flick even though I think it could have been 20-30 minutes shorter to be even more gripping. it is mysterious and keeps you on your toes, but some of the scenes I felt not necessary (the long dialogue between julia roberts and the girl in the shed for example). SPOILERS AHEAD: I felt like Mahersala Ali character's reaction to a fucking plane dropping on his head was... undertoned?? didnt really get that choice. On the matter, all character's reaction were a bit... weird, maybe? im wondering if it was a deliberate choice, because the acting was always on point.

How come everyone attacks Robert's character when Herrold's character was even more prejudiced & unlikable?? All of the characters had their weak points. That was the point otherwise it would be a boring movie if everyone is flawless. Even the needle drops were meant to mean different things to the individual audience members. Americans & their insufferable identity politics! Throw your phone away, it's no good for you! I've observed "survivalism" is getting more & more trendy over the last ten years, & I think this film is going to be overhyped & the main point of the film is going to be actually ignored or overlooked.
@PeterKnagge
@PeterKnagge 8 ай бұрын
All the characters were supposed to be unlikable. I think a lot of people are going to miss the point of the film as it is a critique of modern America. Hence the title of the film, "Leave The World Behind"... For the last few hundred years as far as the universe is concerned it's the end of the line for the human race. Billions of years of evolution plus also game theory science proves that "co-operation" is the best survival strategy. This is something preppers say, but to be frank are lost in their own little world just as much as their own neighbours.

I felt that everything about this movie was awesome except the story. Agree completely that the shots, the actors, and the editing were great. But I can’t be farther from this opinion that the story is good. Maybe it’s because I see deer every day, maybe it’s because I have a dash of Kevin Bacon’s character in me excluding the right-wing radical media view, but ultimately it makes the entire movie feel like they polished a turd. They put one serious shine on it, but the story left me feeling more upset with it than entertained and ultimately as shiny as it was it was still a big ol turd.
