Too many people are missing how important being in the correct gear is for a mid drive. On that second test when JT was on the XPremium, he kept it in first gear the whole time. In 1st gear, you will only ever be able to reach comparatively low speeds. It had very little to do with JT's weight.

Yeah, this is driving me crazy. I went ahead cancelled my XPremium order and put a mid drive motor on an existing bike. I'm still interested, but I won't purchase until a reviewer finds a hill that the 2.0 stalls out on and shows what the XPremium will do in that situation. My kit bike is lot stronger than the XPremium anyway, and I've got full suspension, albeit with 2" tires ...

A question about Lectric's recommendation to NOT use the throttle with gears 5, 6 or 7: don't they just mean when using the throttle to START from a stop when in those higher gears? I don't see why it would be a problem to use the throttle in gears 5, 6 and 7 while at high speeds. Something I remember Levi (the founder of Lectric) saying in an interview with ChrisCrossed, was that they purposely limited the peak power you can get from the throttle as a way to protect the drivetrain. Max power is only available in pedal assist.

Agree with "Learning all I can". With the mid-drive motor you always have to worry about what gear you're in, and at least in Lectric's version of that design, it also requires a fairly large amount of rider effort to get the most out of the motor, which in my opinion defeats the purpose of _having_ a motor in the first place. Meanwhile, with the hub drive, I can start out in top gear if I forget to downshift before stopping. With the hub-drive motor, which is directly connected to the rear wheel (so it doesn't matter which gear I'm in), it just starts pulling with max torque right from the get-go. And since the hub-drive XP's use a cadence sensor instead of a torque sensor, you don't have to push hard to get the maximum amount of power out of the motor. In fact, you don't have to push at all -- just choose your preferred Pedal Assist level and let the motor do all the work. With the cadence sensor, all you have to do is spin the crank -- you don't have to apply any pressure. The cadence sensor detects only the rotation of the crank -- not the amount of torque applied by the rider -- and applies power according to the Pedal Assist level you've chosen.

Another worry with the Premium is the inability to turn off the battery like you can with the 2.0. Once the key is turned to activate the bike, with or without the key in, the bike will continue to function until both batteries are drained. I’ll need to double chain it to make sure it’s not stolen.

There will be confusion surrounding how many chargers come with the bike. Other reviewers have said that the bike comes with 2. Having only one charger will be highly impractical. Being a low amp charger, it will already take long to charge one battery, and then you still have to remember to go plug in the other one. If they don't give you a second charger, you will likely have to buy a second one to make this work.

AFAIK neither of the riders in the speed and hill tests mentioned ever changing the PAS level when riding the XPremium. @@petermacdonald8331 _"I guess a fuller test would have included a comparison between the two ebikes climbing hills while pedaling..."_ The problem with that is that you would be comparing the relative athletic ability of the riders rather than the bikes themselves. It's conceivable that you could run two tests with the same rider on each bike, making very careful and frequent speed measurements along the way, but even that would be problematic because you couldn't ensure that the rider was putting in the same amount of effort for each bike on each test.

I still don't think this is a valid test. What gear was the heavier guy in when he was on the XPremium? I certainly won't be reordering an XPremium until a reviewer finds a hill that the 2.0 stalls out on, and sees what the new bike will do in this situation. This is the whole point of a mid drive, to climb the steeper hills a similarly powered hub drive struggles with. It is also my understanding that the XPremium will NOT deliver full power in throttle only mode, requiring some torque from the user before the motor will truly max out. Maybe you don't live near any mountains. I live in the mountains myself so it's pretty much all hills around here. I have found the 2.0 to be severely lacking and will probably be selling it. Using my driveway as an example, I gain about 150 feet in elevation over about 275 yards. My 2.0 is decked out with the full cargo package and a second battery running in parallel. It weighs in at over 90 pounds. I find myself essentially pedaling the bike up mostly under my own power. It just about kills me, usually to the point where I just get off and walk (mode) it up. It's actually easier on a regular non powered bike. What happens is the motor stalls out, only pulling about 4 amps while I am in PAS 5 with the throttle pegged for good measure. In this situation, I am in 1st gear with an 11-34t freewheel. I am not an athlete, but I am in reasonable shape and can handle huffing and puffing for a bit. I am guessing the motor is only pulling these amps because it isn't able to spin up fast enough, being that I am only doing about 3-4 mph. There's either a measure to prevent burning out the motor, or the motor just can't pull full amperage at low speeds. On my driveway, it certainly hasn't had the time to generate much heat, and it stalls out pretty quickly. I'd like to see the bikes compared in this situation.

Question is just thought of. Maybe you can ask the guys at Lectric. I'm a big believer in charging to 80% to prolong battery life. On my current ebike, I can do this easily. I can see the battery voltage and and I know how much my charger inputs per hour. So I just use a timer. Now, you can use this method on the XP 2.0 since you are able to see the voltage. But on the XPremium, how will this work since there are 2 batteries that may have 2 very different voltage levels? Isn't the screen only set up to display voltage for one battery? How can I know the voltage of each individual battery to then be able to charge by timer?

Nice demo on the hill guys. I think the Xpremium is a great deal with 2 batteries and mid drive. The disappointing part to me is the 4 inch rims and tires on it. One of the big advantages with a mid drive is getting to have lightweight wheels that are much more efficient. Putting the heavy wheels on it seems like a poor decision. Still looks like a good bike to me though and many people prefer the fat tires since they do smooth things out a little. I think the ideal solution is to have two bikes if you can. Ride a lighter weight mid drive when you want to feel like a cyclist. Use a hub motor wide tire bike with a rack and basket for errands around town.

@Jimmy The 20x4-in tires are hard to find smooth tread options with good puncture resistance. The long-term durability of the truck-run mid drive motor is unclear for service over many years. I passed on this bike favoring one with 26 by 2.0 tires for a standard bicycle ride.

The issue with the comparison in the first video where Ryan tested the XPremium was that the gear he was using to climb the hill was a gear that would only be capable of producing that low speed. Remember that the gear you're in is directly related to the speed you can achieve. It has to do with the relationship between wheel circumference, gear ratio between front and rear rings and motor RPM/ pedal cadence.

No "stupid" questions here. A mid-drive motor is a motor that is placed "in" the pedals and amplifies the power from the pedals through the rear gears and then to the ground. Where a hub drive motor is strictly putting power into the rear wheel and to the ground. So shifting is more important as the mid-drive motor able to utilize the gearing of the rear wheel. Imagine a mid-drive ebike is like a car with a transmission and a hub drive motor would be like strapping your car engine right to your wheels. Hope that helps. -JT

I have a fat tire compact cargo and am so torn on what to add for a second bike. I kinda want a fun light bike that’s simple enough for my 15 year old to ride or me to just hop on and go. So torn between lite with extra battery and rear rack, the 2.0 with extra battery, or the xpremium. The big draw to the xpremium is two integrated batteries and I’d love to try a mid drive at under $2000. I keep switching back and forth adding each setup to cart and just can’t pull the trigger on one. Knowing me I’ll wind up with the lite and extra battery and also the premium. In all honesty I think the lite looks best, followed by the 2.0, then the xpremium. The xpremium looks sooo long I’m also worried about handle bar reach

So now I'm back to looking at the xpremium and also considering the 2.0 step thru while stock lasts. I could wait the 8-10 weeks as I'll survive with the 2.0 I have or should I just buy the 2.0 step thru and sell the non step thru? Theres so many reasons to get the XPremium over the 2.0 yet the 2.0 seems more practical as theres no hills here, I just don't know which I should do. Sorry for the long read. @EbikeEscape

You can charge it either way. There is place i. The frame for the battery to charged on the bike.

I don't see a place on the bike where you can charge it I asked that question to the company directly they said there's no where to charge the bike they're working on it but nothing is concrete

Lesson learned - I don't need a bigger motor or better battery I just need to lose 50lbs and then any bike will climb hills.

From what i've learn about "slime" used on car tire is that its a sticky situation when it comes to changing tires off the rim and its a big clean up job to scrape that stuff off before you even put new tires on that rim. But looking at the bike wheel situation, i'm assuming that the slime is basically in the inner tube, now what if you say ran over a nail and it punctures that tube, wouldn't the slime be leaking inside your tire and rim?
@appye7994
@appye7994 2 жыл бұрын
Only a tiny amount, if any. What the slime (and other similar products) does is fill in the puncture with fibers. If any does "leak" out, it will only be a tiny amount at the puncture site.

You know what that new electric bike doesn't impress me much you would think with two batteries it would be able to help perform the old bike no matter what your weight is but it looks like to me if you're a lighter in weight the old bike outperforms the new one so really is it worth the money I don't think so
@turbofan450

The issue wasn't weight. JT kept the bike in 1st gear the whole time. You can't achieve higher speeds in first gear.
@jimmyjames8736
@jimmyjames8736 2 жыл бұрын
Turbofan is right. JT never shifted to gain speed before hill and let 2.0 build huge lead. The other main thing though is that the Xpremium got JT up the hill on throttle and the 2.0 couldn't. Gotta give the mid drive credit there. I will be keeping my 2.0 for now though, just got done with mods a month ago and I have more $ in it than the price of the Xpremium lol.

Plus extra battery has nothing to do with performance, it just gives extra range. That’s got nothing to do with anything. It’s correct about the wrong gear being chose

@@EbikeEscape I was thinking about getting the xpremium but I’m not sure if 2.0 would be a better option for cargo and delivery services I live in LA so not too hilly but definitely some big hills if you go to certain places. Basically I’m afraid of straining or ruining a xpremium with too much throttle only use and I’m afraid the xp 2.0 won’t have a long enough battery to effectively make money from delivering food and stuff. I can see myself being someone who uses “throttle only” about 40-75% of the time in some instance’s and just for fun. I had some concerns about the brakes on the 2.0 but it also sounds like you can’t just start riding a xpremium on like 5th or 3rd gear you have to be aware of the gears at all times as to not put more wear and tear on the bike prematurely. That’s something I’m not sure about because I can see myself forgetting about or not paying attention to proper gear shifts unless I’m on a incline. Then I’ll always properly shift. Basically I’m wondering will the xpremium work with my style of riding or should I go with a 2.0 mostly the things I have against the 2.0 are it’s battery life, range, and I’ve seen some other people say they could only get it to 23 but I think I saw someone else get it to 28 but idk if they were going downhill. Not too critical of the jerkiness in back wheel hub ebikes personally but also would prefer the less jerky. Will I really be spending significantly more time on maintenance with a xpremium if I throttle only often compared to its 2.0 counterpart?

All the questions I'm thinking of. I'm not sure which bike to go with. I'm new to the ebike world. I'd like something that gets me around to the stores I live close to but also to the lake 15-20 miles from me. Also with less complication on maintenance and gear shifting.

@@joshdavila87 I have the first Lectric bike with one battery and I'm a heavy guy, around 270 lbs. My range on the one battery is 20-25 miles tops, no more. Your mileage may vary based on weight and which bike (and battery) option you go for. That more expensive model appears to require more maintenance, at least according to the video. I'd go with the regular 2.0 and just buy another battery, charge it and take it with you. Again, according to your weight and how much cycling you're doing versus using the motor more. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
