An expression like "Pax Indica" is often immediately, and seemingly naturally, misconstrued to mean world domination, as in the familiar "Pax Romana" or "Pax Britannica". What Dr Tharoor means by the term, however, is the critical role India has to play in what has become a cooperative networked system in our multi-polar world. The idea of "Pax Indica", is not about India as a future "world leader" or even as "the next superpower", which is a status assorted commentators claim it is heading irresistibly towards in the near future. Instead "Pax Indica", in his conception, is about India's role in shaping the emerging global "network", which is really what will define international relations and world politics in the 21st century. In this lecture he will explain what it means to be a rising economic and political power in the post Cold War age, where the architecture and landscape of the world are ever changing, and nation states like India must not only embrace such change but actively determine its future design and direction.

================================================
An author, politician, and former international civil servant, Dr. Shashi Tharoor straddles several worlds of experience. Currently a second-term Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Thiruvananthapuram constituency and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs, he has previously served as Minister of State for Human Resource Development and Minister of State for External Affairs in the Government of India. During his nearly three-decade long prior career at the United Nations, he served as a peacekeeper, refugee worker, and administrator at the highest levels, serving as Under-Secretary General during Kofi Annan's leadership of the organisation. Dr. Tharoor is also an award-winning author of fifteen books of both fiction as well as non-fiction.

Great thought. But what are the chances ? Zip ! As long as we do not have direct democracy good people cannot be elected. Indian Prime Minister is "selected" by the politicians and not the people. There lies the one and only obstacle.
@sandeepsandhu4286
@sandeepsandhu4286 4 жыл бұрын
@@vijoyabraham6328 I agree partly with your statement . Congress will never let him lead and make him a PM candidate till rahul and priyanka are alive. The later part of your statement i completely disagree with. Its like saying every PM in a democracy is "selected" not elected.... not true by any stretch of imagination either. What is direct democracy anyway !!
@vijoyabraham6328

@@sandeepsandhu4286 You maybe right but that does not mean that India has to follow the same mold that was set for them by the Britishers. Why can't they choose their own path. Isn't more democratic to elect the prime minister directly by the people who then can surround himself with qualified people to be ministers rather than incompetent and uneducated politicians. Look at the US. 2 prominent things worth mentioning : 1. President directly elected by the people (that includes the candidates elected by the people through primaries) 2. Separation of powers a) Executive branch b) Judicial branch and c) Legislative branch. One does not have power over the other. What do you think ?
@sandeepsandhu4286
@sandeepsandhu4286 4 жыл бұрын
@@vijoyabraham6328 I am not against the idea and am all for more power to people , however is that the answer ?Are people responsible enough with their votes ? Change is good , and i am all for it. However why break a system that aint broken ? And changing systems ( democracy structures ) doesnt equal better governance or for that matter better democracy and accountability. There are equal.number of crooks found in either system . The more power you give to people ( especially in these social media days ) the more you open your country to external forces to be misused , in the name of the very people you advocate more power to. There are both positives and negatives to giving more power to people ...why - because the system can be abused ? Look at the narrative being built around CAA which had NOTHING to do with any indian ,OR status of minorities which is a load of utter BS, based on fake news, propaganda , peddling and painting part of the story etc. I feel ( totally my opinion ) india is way too democratic . Introduction of a few communist principles to force people to follow the law wouldnt go astray. What is needed is stricter laws , minimum qualifications , vetting clean intellegent people to enter politics etc ,.. that will have a direct outcome on democracy , instead of following a certain democratic structures. In my opinion the present givernment is doing a fantastic job at both democracy and governance, that reflects our democratic system ... ( congress abused the system , BJP has used the same system to make our sovereignty includung giving rights to people stronger ) further emphasizing its not the system, but the people in the system that make all the difference.
