A 500w tungsten lamp is still a baby. Back in the 80's I installed some fittings to light a farmyard that were 1000w Tungstens - I hope he's changed them since then given the price of electricity.

till this video did not know luceco was a BG brand... To be honest, BG have variable quality... which might be good, means they're adapting. The weatherproof storm accessories are our go to... the consumer units, notsomuch (RCD failures are common). Luceco lights... yep. been pretty reliable. (also BG, now the sun is setting on the split load board, was there an issue with the RCDs that has since been fixed?)

Maybe if the manufacturers didn’t drive the LED’s so hard, heat dissipation and longevity wouldn’t be so much of a problem, see ‘Dubai lamps’ for properly designed lamps

Great video as always Joe 👌 You mentioned that the old halogen lamps came in 150w and 500w , I remember back in 1995 I was working on a building site in London and I had to fit 1000w halogen lamps around the the scaffolding to light the pit for the still worker’s building the still cage for the foundations before the concrete was pumped in those lamps were quite big and heavy a bugger to install on your own. Fantastic video lots of useful information to think about 👍👍👍❤️

I once went out to a local farm before led lights were a thing to remove a damaged 500 watt halogen flood light. The light was mounted high up on an open barn facing inwards which was used as a lambing shed where lambs were being born and straw everywhere, the light had no glass cover had gotten knocked and the hot lamp landed on the straw setting the barn alight, luckily it was seen and dealt with quickly

I replaced a small 10watt pir led flood light for a luceco recently at my parents place to shine on a corner path way as the led lamps had gone to an orange glow in the existing light fitting , the one thing I noticed is the pir sensor didn't have a very wide angle so it only detects going down the one pathway. I hadn't thought at the time and just saw the light fitting at the wholesalers so brought it spur of the moment , I should of checked the pir detection angle range.

I have installed a lot of LED security and floodlights and I still learned a lot from this - thank you. I'll put my hand up to admit install these pointing upwards. I get lots of requests to light trees, ornamental features, etc and small floodlights are perfect. So it's a shame the design doesn't allow for this, as there doesn't appear to be much else on market for this application. Ground spike lights are ok, but are generally limited by the power of GU10 lamps most use. I've had one LED floodlight used to light a large shrub fail after 3 years - it has water behind glass ... now how did that get there :-( My tip on using them on walls is to have supply cable coming through or down an outside wall terminate inside a Wiska box (308 is a good size). Then mount the LED floodlight close by and connect the fitting lead in the box. The Wiska box can cover a cable coming straight out through wall, and generally looks neater. It also means you change change it more quickly if it fails or customer wants to change to higher or lower wattage. While I'm at it ... when is someone going to come up with a better way of setting up PIRs - replacing those stupid tiny knobs on bottom. Luceco's new range have the tiniest yet, and I have had two fittings fail when trying to turn them. Hands up who has set up a security light, had customer agree it, only to ask you to call back to make it run on 5 seconds longer? (Rant over).

I feel that people don't understand the difference between horizontal and vertical. With the old halogen fittings it was the tube that needs to be horizontal, the housing can be swivelled to reflect the light downwards and so not go into neighbours windows. Yet so many times you see the glass faceplate vertical.

Loved how you kept a straight when you said older, less reliable technology. Luceco 30000 hour LED floods will be lucky if they've 100th of 30000 hours. After fitting 5 and all 5 go, something has to be said about the claim of 30000 hours. With that performance, I wouldn't trust Luceco again.

Outside upward facing flood light requires an exterior surrounding case with a 45 degree sloping glass pane to keep the light weather proof.

Not a fan of floodlights on domestic, prefer more discreet lighting , great for industrial and site lighting .. i miss the old 500w halogen in winter , great for warming up plastic conduit ready for bending .. i've tried a few luceco products, so far so good

Nice video. Question: is there any type of floodlight that you can mount on a ground and tilt up at a wall as you mentioned that you shouldn’t do that as it can let water in overtime.

@@efixx ok cool. Also the new Castra range by Luceco seems rubbish and it’s rather expensive compared to your average floodlight, for example a 10w luceco castra floodlight from screwfix is £19.98. Also the new luceco castra brackets are a bit strange compared to a regular floodlight. In my garden I have a LAP by screwfix 20w 2000lm floodlight with pir in my garden and it is excellent! It lights up the whole thing and only paid £12.98 for it. The lap ones are also extremely good quality and last very long and don’t let a single drop of water in so I think the LAP range is better, more reliable, and certainly cheaper than that luceco water filling rubbish. The luceco ones no matter how you mount them just attract lots of water and they are always flimsy plastic that will break at a tiny drop. A 10w luceco floodlight that I use to have couldn’t even light a small room nor a garden ffs luceco are USELESS

@TheChipmunk2008

There's a reason PIR's fail.... they have to use polyethylene for the window as it's the only common plastic that's infrared transparent. It's also not stable in UV light (those of us who have been on lots of sites remember the GPO armoured cable with the sheath that isn't present above ground level?.... they lost thousands of rolls of that cable in open air storage in the 70s... because nobody thought to check if it was UV stable) In short, PIR's WILL fail if exposed to sunlight.... if you're fitting a separate one ... try to bear that in mind

Only one reliable brand I have fitted is challenger five year warranty. One of the makes iv tried And fitted is the Luceco (old model) as a lower price opinion and had failure after failure. The failed units were always domestic and always fitted as per instruction. I’ve tried several brands and my experience is disappointment generally and annoying returning visits to replace.

I Dont agree with the life span of a fitting over the years I have found the more the light is switched on and off is the key.EXAMPLE I have fitted lights where they have been on 24/7 for the last 5 years ( led ) and they continue to work perfect but the same light fitting on a unit with a time switch has been replaced 3 times ( same supply ) Switching deffo reduced life of a fitting.

Maybe things should be built like they were in the old days. Everything is soo plasticity, cheap, doesn't last long, and isn't supposed to do this and that... Very few things 'just work' and last unless you pay a ton of money and know where to look. Even fittings used in the correct environment from so-called 'quality brands' don't last. I'm not saying we should go back to halogen, but at least they were so simple that the manufacturer didn't have much chance to make it go wrong with bad design (unless it had a PIR). A lot of stuff was over-engineered in the old days but that had many positive side effects on all sort of aspects of the product. Now everyone tries to shave on pennies and try to hit the very low bar of meeting 'standards'. Many brands ride on the success of their past and the name they made for themselves whilst not caring about what they do as they once used to.
