Jimmy Page was going through a major heroin addiction at the time. It is amazing he was able to function at all circa 1979. Bonzo was in bad condition at the time too. This album was saved by Robert Plant and John Paul Jones. Their last really good album was Physical Graffiti in 1975.

I LOVE, ❤️, 💕, LOVE this album! It is one of my favorite Led Zep albums, and one of my favorite rock albums overall. Even the goofy Hot Dog 🌭 (the one weak track) is still listenable. All of the songs are top notch, and they range in all the different styles of music. It is just an awesome album, one big chunk of classic ROCK!

I believe if Bonham had lived. They would've been very synth heavy in the 80's John Paul Jones played a big role on this album.

Why not rank Credence Clearwater Revival and the Doors at the same time Larry?,on a rotating basis,it might even be better doing two bands at the same time,a little more variety, just a thought. Bob.

For some reason I’ve always really liked this album. Part of it no doubt is that it is the only LZ album released when I was in High School and really in to Classic Rock, and it was played constantly - constantly, on the radio in Philadelphia. But also - I think this is one of those albums like “Drama” by Yes (released around the same time) that sounds like nothing else. I’m not sure how to describe what the sound here is - I know that JP was not as involved in this album for various sordid reasons, and the burden fell on JPJ and RP, so it was more keyboard and synthesizer oriented. I think they were trying to adjust their sound to fit the burgeoning new wave scene, and of course people didn’t like that. There was also much made of “All Of My Love”being a ballad - but it was hardly Zeppelin’s only ballad, and as you said, it was about RP’s deceased Son, so people should give the guy a break. But even with all of that it was still very much a Led Zeppelin album, and I would loved to have seen what they did next.

Hey Larry…. I’m sorry to say, but it’s my favourite Led Zeppelin album. Very underrated…. I bought it when I was 14 the day it was released- it sounded very modern for the time. I like the fact they were trying new things. Also, the reason the vocals are buried on ‘caroselambra’ is the lyrics were apparently aimed at Jimmy (where was your bow….)- so goes the legend. Great album.

Good review. This one is hard to rank. I really like the album but.....? Fool in the Rain is one of favourite Zeppelin songs. All My Love is beautiful. I nearly lost my son as a baby and he spent some time in hospital so the song reminds how precious and fragile life is. Cheers

Back when this album debuted it was regarded as “disco” sounding by many of the youth, at least the ones I hung around with , who felt they had sold out. And that was not a good thing! As we all HATED that new sound called disco. Excitement followed by mild disappointment was in the air and was our initial reaction as the album premiered in its entirety on the local rock station in Boston. I think it was the great WBCN in Boston. We literally all jammed into a car to hear it in its entirety as it was really a special highly touted event. There was a huge amount of anticipation probably everywhere then as Zeppelin were still a huge deal in 1979 so lots of anticipation and suspense for this release . That’s my personal story of this album. I think it’s great in its own right and shouldn’t compare albums as it really is it’s own body of work. So that’s my view from actually being present at the time of its release.

1. Physical Graffiti 2. Led Zeppelin IV 3. Houses Of The Holy 4. Led Zeppelin III 5. Led Zeppelin II 6. Presence 7. Led Zeppelin I 8. In Through The Out Door but, In Through The Out Door is a pretty great album. I love "Carouselambra" and "Fool In The Rain" and "In The Evening." Not a big fan of "Southbound Suarez" or "Hot Dog." It's pretty good for a band if your least best album is a B+ (or so) album. Always loved Led Zeppelin.

Not a bad Zep album, but yes it is on the bottom. I didn't catch if you planned to include Coda. So here is my list: 1. Physical Graffiti 2. Led Zeppelin II 3. Led Zeppelin IV 4. Led Zeppelin I 5. Houses of the Holy 6. Led Zeppelin III 7. Presence 8. In Through the Out Door The band Vanilla Fudge has an album called Out Through the In Door which is an album of Zep covers in Fudge style. Pretty good listen and has its own sound. Carmine Appice was a big influence on John Bonham's drumming when LZ were starting out.

My thoughts on, “In Through The Out Door” will probably differ from most. This album helped get me though some tough times. It was warm, it was cheerful, and most of all, it was FUN! 🙂 Granted, the musicianship is not as top notch as previous Zeppelin albums. However, the musicianship is still quite good in my humble opinion. Sure, it could have been better. But considering the challenges that they were facing the band, it is quite good. Personally, I feel that this album is miles ahead of “Presence”. Not to say ‘Presence’ was a bad album because it is not. Just darker and perhaps more depressing. That is not a bad thing. The band was dealing with a lot at the time. In Through The Out Door might not be the best Zeppelin album, but is still shines. I have more fun listening to this album more than the others, it is just that kind of album to me. Like all albums, some songs are stronger than others. Some of this is top-of-the-barrel Led Zeppelin! But I find all of the songs to be quite enjoyable! 🤩 My Song Rankings are as follows: (Believe it or not, this was a difficult album to rank, as I love all of the songs. So my rankings may change, depending on my mood. 😊) 7. Hot Dog 6. Carouselambra 5. I’m Gonna Crawl 4. Fool In The Rain 3. In The Evening 2. South Bound Suarez 1. All My Love

I know this is most LZ-fans least favourite amongst studio albums bar Coda (which isn't a proper album) . I really like the album though. Jones and Plant had to step forward in the making of this album which was recorded in Stockholm. I saw Plant in Stockholm (in 2016?) and he told some anecdotes from the time of the recordings. Apparently it was just him and Jones for much of the time in the studio. This is the only album with some original songs not co-written by Page. My favourites are "Carouselambra" , "Fool in the rain" and "In the Evening". Final rankings: Physical Graffiti LZ I LZ IV LZ III Houses of the Holy In through the out doir Presence LZ II I guess some would argue with me for putting LZ II at the bottom while LZ I, which by most is considered similar, is placed 2:nd. I like all albums but one has to be top and one has to be bottom. I often play LZ I but seldom LZ II.

Great review, Larry! Even I am more the guy who likes to do both professional and fun reviews, I love your reviews. Music is just great, no matter what you say about it, just to be talking about it in some way is such a pleasure. And even if you just say "I like the song", we know what you mean because you show what you feel and that's great. /PVS

Definitely one of their weaker albums, but I love side two. I think Carouselambra is an underrated masterpiece. Even though you can't understand his vocals, it only adds a bit of mystery to the song. All My Love is great and I'm Gonna Crawl is one of my favorite pure blues songs by them. Side one is a bit more uneven and I HATE Hot Dog. The only Zeppelin song I dislike more is Darlene. But the first three songs are good songs, though not among my very favorites. It's too bad about John Bonham and it would have been interesting to see what Zeppelin would have done in the 80s.

You can tell by this point that the band was starting to come apart, but for me it’s still very enjoyable. It’s just a shame we never got to see where they went next when Bonzo passed. I overall enjoyed this series. You already got me into Sparks, Lou Reed, and Blue Öuster Cult, but it’s been nice to revisit John Lennon and Led Zeppelin. Looking forward to The Doors!

I really liked this album from the start. But, I didn't get into Led Zeppelin until a few years after they broke up. Robert Plant's "The Principle Of Moments" was my gateway into the world of Led Zeppelin. So, you could see how I wasn't as put off by the synths and overtly pop sound of "In Through The Out Door". I think it's my second least favorite Led Zeppelin album, after "Presence". But, I enjoy every track on here, but some of it is weaker, by Led Zeppelin's high standards. I give this album a "B+". I like it better than a lot of their other fans. Although, I have seen some fans call this their all-time favorite Led Zeppelin album. I guess it all depends of what kind of music you're mostly into.

Mmmmmnn.... I know this album is bottom for most fans, but its top for me. Unlike you, I think the production is great, and I applaud them for trying new things like more synth sounds and also things like "fool in the rain", which was a radio hit in 1979 in my native NZ. There is not one track here I would skip; I love "south bound sourez", and also "Carolsel-Ambra" (just helping you with pronunciation). And I agree "Im gonna crawl" sends chills..... great underrated album.

My ranking: 8. Precence: B- Plants vocals have gone very weak at this point really. The whole band have kind of lost their spirit here in my opinion. The only TRACK to remember here for me is "Achilles last Strand" wich stands out to me as one of their best tracks. That probably would be their best track if Plants vocals wouldnt be kind of bland. 7. In trough the outdoor: B The reason why I put this above Precence is simple. I appriciate the difference. Precence would be a better album if these were the only Zeppelin albums in existence, but on precence it feels like they try to do what they were once unbeatable at again, but most of their energy is gone and their just kind of bored at what their doing, when here they at least try something different from their usual style. 6. Zeppelin II: A- Okay here things start to get hot. All of these albums from here on are almost tied. Zep II is the weakest for me only becouse I think that it IS the least memorable of the bunch. What makes this objectively one of their best releases is that this might have invented metal, and if not so, this definetly at least influenced the start of that genre. 5. Zeppelin III: A- Yeah, why I put this above II is probably mainly again becouse of the differnce. This is kind of a Folk rock influenced record, when II was one of the heaviest releases of these guys. 4. Zeppelin IV: A- Okay probably the biggest classic of theirs, and one of the biggest classics of rock music in general. Definetly a step up in musicianship from III, but at the same time this is also a little more usual rock album really. I still absolutely love this disc. Stairway... When the levee... and black dog are some of the best hard rock songs ever released. Battle of evermore is also a really good track and kind of a look to the future with houses of the holy. 3. Physical Graffitti: A The only reason this isnt #1 or #2 is Plants vocals that have gone worse slowly after IV and here you can spot already a clear difference. Pages, John Paul Jones and Bonhams playing are all at their best on this record in my opinion. In the light and ten years gone are some of my favourite tracks really. The Rover and in My Time of dying are masterpieces too. 2. Zeppelin: A Plants vocals at their best, Bonhams drumming at their best tied with graffiti, aswell as the freenes of the band at this point. That you can see especially with the marvelous final TRACK. Dazed and confused is also a TRACK in my opinion that should deserve the classic status of stairway. Cant get enough of this. Houses of the holy: A The only reason this isnt A+ is that sadly Plants voice IS starting to get worse here. Otherwise pretty much a perfect album with my 3 Fav Zeppelin songs of no Quarter, The Ocean and the Rain Song. They were easily at the Peak of thei songwriting on this record. A MASTERPIECE. Thank you for reading and have a good Day! :D

I'm Gonna Crawl is a great song. The synth strings ruin it. It should be re-done with Pages guitar brought louder and Jones should replace the synth strings with an organ and make it more like 'Since I Been Loving You' and 'Tea for One'.
