I feel like he digs this song way more than her. It is like riding waves of sound. Soft and smooth one minute, even serene, to rage at the pain he feels, then back to hope for a better future, to eventually making the decision and the pain in all of these phases. This is art in my opinion.

In 1963 I learned the original folk version of this song, written by Anne Bredon and first recorded by Joan Baez. A number of bands did the song in the following years in different arrangements without much success, including The Plebs in 1964 (a British band with members of the Nashville Teens, who had the hit Tobacco Road), The Association in 1965 and Quicksilver Messenger Service in 1968 (a very psychedelic version). Of course when Led Zeppelin came out with this in 1969 it was immediately the definitive rock version. Though I still also loved the Joan Baez version, I removed the song from my setlist, since if I played it at a gig everyone would be expecting their version after the intro, and that would have been pretty tough for me to pull off as a solo performed accompanied only by my twelve string guitar and a harmonica :) Also, I really enjoyed the reaction!

The Plebs version was a really upbeat jolly sounding number. I rather like it but it's completely different from LZ's emotional version and no one can touch LZ.

THIS is the led Zeppelin I love. No hard rocking, screaming, theatrics or orgasms. Just pure soulful blues which shows Plants amazing vocals at their best. So much emotion in his singing - beautiful. May I request "When the Levee Breaks" or "Since I've Been Lovin You" - two more great LZ bluesy numbers. Could it be time to introduce Dee to the other "male Janis" - Steve Marriott - my favorite soul man. "Stay with Me Baby", "I Wonder", or for something lighter "I Know You're So Good for Me" are some she may like? Thank you.

I firmly believe that women just don't get it when it comes to music, especially music with high production quality. Have you ever heard a woman brag about her stereo system? I feel the music they enjoy, that most men can't stand, would be okay to them even it was coming from a clock radio. But, that's just my thoughts.

@@moefeaux1442 Most of us who grew up in the 70's, going to concerts around Detroit every other weekend, beg to differ. Agreed. Since I’ve been loving you and the rain song are my two favorites from them. Which is first depends on my mood. One of the things that kills me is when a new reactors first LZ song is stairway. Yes, it’s a classic. But I’d be hard pressed to put it in their top 10. Once you get into them…they’re so much deeper. Dazed and confused…if you don’t get goosebumps when you get the double drum fill/drop after the psychedelic guitar, something in you is broken.

The music from the '70s was way more dynamic because a person's personality could come out completely into their instrument which spoke for them. Unfortunately I think your wife is missing the bigger picture. But hopefully you will paint the canvas for her and she will understand and enjoy it to the fullest extent. The best way to describe their music is "dynamics" in that they will change it within a song, it will speed up or slow down, it might get loud or soft. Or there will be layers to their musicality so you have to take your time to listen to it all. As I've told others, Zeppelin was not a one-trick-pony, they gave light and shade and variety and you will find yourself having to actually pay attention to the dynamics but it will be rewarding.
