This makes sense. I never really thought it was a permanent breakup either, at least not a completely voluntary one. He is singing about forces calling him. And also the pull to go home. In my mind I translated this to the sort of relationship Old World sailors had with their Polynesian families. No matter how happy, healthy, and idealic, there was a call to get back on the sea, and a call to go "home". In my mind it is the requiem of the traveler who MUST travel to live, but Loves his woman and home, and sometimes they aren't the same thing. Databyter

@@Databyter A lot of Led Zeppelin's songs refer to rambling, travelling or the lure of the open road. It's obviously a theme that appeals to Robert, and also relates to the nomadic life of musicians on tour. However the original song was written by Anne Bredon.

This song was originally written by American folk singer Anne Bredon in the '50's. Joan Baez (another American folk singer) recorded it for her 1962 album which is the album Jimmy Page first heard it on. Jimmy had been practicing and reworking it and recorded it with his new group, Led Zeppelin for their first album released in 1969.

@@jameskennedy721 Anne Bredon sued Led Zeppelin for credit and won so now newer albums do show her name as a credit so a court of law said she is correct. It is typically credited as "Traditional" meaning no one is sure who originally wrote it.

Love this reaction! I love any song from the first Zep album. This one really demonstrates Page and Plant's aim of making music with light and shade, with soft acoustic parts and the loudest, most bombastic rock you've ever heard wallop you, inside and out. If you like this, might I suggest checking out How Many More Times, especially the live TV performance from Danish TV.

Get the words to the song. He’s singing about a place called Kashmir and JPJ made the music in his piano sound very Himalayan like. And so the music matched the story PERFECTLY. This group can not be criticized. They were and still are geniuses!!!

One of their best tunes and for sure the best on LZ I. I remember when I heard it the first time in the 90's. Goosebumps.
