That was an interesting question midway through the song. I assure you, from someone that grew up in that era, that mostly we wouldn't have known what to ask for from this band until after we had heard them perform it. They were all master musicians, and together they were greater than the sum of their parts. They combined different styles and genres into something that was uniquely their own, and each member brought his own unique contribution to the end result. I look forward to watching you discover and appreciate Led Zeppelin.

Plant & Page repeatedly have said that Old school American Blues was the fuel & inspiration for almost everything they created. You hear the roots of deep south blues in so many songs by Led Zep, with Robert Plant's vocals screaming and powerfully gripping you with many of his "call backs" found as vocal fills within much of their material. They added heavy guitar riffs which appealed to many heavy metal, hard & pop rock fans. But blues fans could appreciate their music as well due to the never ending classic soulful blues inspired vocals & lyrics. Led Zeppelin married all these elements together to create a sound unlike any other at the time, and became the world's biggest Rock band thanks to the incredible ability of each of it's members. Much respect to you for continuing your journey down the Classic Rock path brother. Keep going forward, it will really be worth it!!

This music at the time was incredibly groundbreaking, they were constantly subjected to harsh reviews because none of the reviewers understood what the band were doing, this was very new to people at the time, but there were obviously enough people who did understand it as they pretty much blew up not too long after this album was released. Otherwise the lyrics were a lot of the time borrowed from old blues songs songs and mainly written by the founder and guitarist of the band Jimmy Page, but you only have to listen the raw passion in Robert Plant's voice and the raw passion in the playing of Page, Bonham and Jones to understand that this was absolutely coming straight from the heart.

To be fair Robert Plant the singer was under contract with another label and also very young at the time. So he couldn't write any of the lyrics on this album, so Jimmy Page wrote most of the first album. Besides the project was Jimmy's baby, so he had ideas and inserted influences that he projected on this album. He paid for the whole session out of his own pocket, they recorded in 30 hours. Besides you can't take sex out of the Led Zeppelin, nor Lord of the Rings 😉

I like your reactions, and your viewpoint. I don’t like theatrics. Zeppelin was incredibly different than anyone else at the time. They were Chicago Blues fans( the electrified ), and that lead to the originators in the South. Jimmy Page wrote most of the music and produced all of their records. He was previously with the Yardbirds who were very popular in the US, before that a very well known and loved studio musician. When the Yardbirds disbanded, he and his manager, Peter Grant, decided to form a band and Jimmy had a clear idea what he wanted to do. He asked a well known singer named Terry Reid to join him but he was already obligated for touring and I think he had signed with a label. Reid recommended Robert Plant. Robert Plant agreed and they both meshed with their musical preferences. John Paul Jones was next to join, and was also a studio musician, one of the best. He plays bass, keyboards and mandolin, and also did some arranging and wrote some music. Robert Plant wrote most of the lyrics, and played harmonica, and he explains himself as a very feeling and emotional singer. John Bonham “Bonzo”, RIP, was the drummer, known now as the best rock and roll drummer ever, and was doing quite well locally working in clubs. He and Robert were close friends, and Robert recommended Bonzo to Jimmy when he was forming the band. Robert talked Bonzo into joining them, he was hesitant at first. JPJ said the first time they played together, they just did a song Jimmy suggested, gave them the basic info as to how to play it, and he says they couldn’t believe how good they were together. Jimmy paid for their first album, $7,000.00, and they recorded it in 36 hours. They did a few tour dates that the Yardbirds were obligated to do, so they played as “The New Yardbirds”, then did a short Scandinavian tour. Peter Grant got them signed with Atlantic records, and they toured the US. By the end of that tour, they were selling out everywhere.

The answer to your question at about 3:40 is not always. They were just good. Their main musical inspiration came from American blues, and they put that kind of emotion into their work because, well, thats how it's done. Later in their career the music did start to get more personal. You can feel real emotion in a lot of songs like The Rain Song, 10 Years Gone, Kashmir, All of My Love, and many others.

Jimmy Page wrote most of the lyrics for the songs of the band's first two albums: mostly inspired by American blues. When Plant began contributing lyrics most of them drew from either his interest in history & literature (the Lord of the Rings in particular); or his own feelings about & reactions to being a traveling musician. There are recurring themes in Zeppelin's songs, which you chart the progress & maturation of throughout their album releases. The songs of their latter albums are filled with very personal lyrics about love, loss, & strife within the band.

From my understanding of Jimmy Page, he was a session musician who played for other bands for years before Led Zeppelin and he was also an experienced music producer so I think he was very deliberate in the sound he was creating. It was a wild time in rock music, but I think he was a fare more disciplined craftsman than the overall sound of the band gives on.

Another song from their first LP (albeit another amazing song from their first LP). For a real experience, check out a video of a live performance by LZ. IMO, this song can be considered one of the very first photo-heavy metal songs in rock. All lyrics were written by vocalist Robert Plant. These guys were HUGELY influenced by the blues, especially on that first album, and the lyrics really tend to be the kind you find in the blues. (E.g., my woman done me wrong, etc.) Get into their later stuff and you’ll hear some different themes lyrically.

@@mikemclaughlin3306 Why not? Everyband has some covers. There's literally no contradiction in it since most of their songs were composed by them -- even songs that were actually plagiarized were also, most of them, filled with massive interesting ideas and original parts. See, danzed and confused has indeed some non-credited bassline( I think the title alone would'nt make the case), but there are drums fills loaded with power and perfect timings, solos, vocals, psychodelic parts, etc... albeit from a stolen part it doesn't stand against Zeppelin's creativity on the overall( it does stands against them morally speaking). Just remembers that most of their songs that are called "stolen" are merely inspired -- they did somes references in lyrics or some instrumental but these kind of things are never considered plagiums by any relevant measure( hence, why only some people sued for it and a little fraction of those people actually did won). Oh, I bet you know little about blues-influencied artists, 'cause in this genre, covers are very common thing -- just check Stones, Purple, Dylan, The Doors, even Muddy Waters, Sonny Boy, Robert Johnson.

The totally turned rock on its head. Revolutionized the industry. Nobody else was or has since come close to the influence this group had. There was and still is a strange stigma attached to them. The media hated them because they didn't rely on good press to build their fan base. There was even made up hype that they worshiped the devil. People claimed Stairway to Heaven had satanic subliminal messages. I remember seeing some guest on a talk show was actually playing the song backwards and pointing out the specific portions. Call it audio pareidolia. The heard what the needed to hear to support their claim. It didn't sound like that to me. Anyway, the were doing their own thing. Jimmy Page put together the band and I would say the driving force being the direction they took. It began as his vision

American black music inspired them, and they brought it back to us changed into this. And hey, you didnt realize it, but you were scratching yourself ALLOT. It’s distracting. Just sayin’. Dispirit not releasing singles, they were the biggest earners throughout the seventies. Their music was so good they sold albums as if they were singles plus they had the greatest manager in music, Peter Grant. He made sure his band got payed unlike many other bands who were ripped off by the promoters and came away with next to nothing. Grant even changed the long established terms between band & promoter which was 60/40 (Band got 60% & promoter got 40%) to 90/10. After lots of screaming & shouting nearly all promoters accepted these new terms as 10% of a Zeppelin show was still quite meaningful.
