The song is specifically about the viking invasion of the British Isles from 794 Ad, the land of the midnight sun / ice and snow / where the hot springs flow ( volcanic springs) are all references to scandinavia. The singer Robert Plant is very interested in early British history so you get references to it in various songs also Brit. literature in others- these are 4 intelligent men who are master musicians so you get excellent songs on a wide variety of subjects. They also sparkle with humour - they had just done concerts in Iceland and had a very nice time so they wrote this song for fun. The outstanding guitar playing is Jimmy Page who is the founding member and the producer. The drummer is John Bonham widely regarded as the greatest rock drummer and the base / keyboard player is John Paul Jones. They are also strongly influenced by the early american blues men and dounmatched blues rock, but they do folk /acoustic rock, they get very funky and then their are songs which are uniquley them , you will need to discover stairway to heaven hopefully the live version at Madison square garden from 1973 . ON the subject of young people becoming old , they did a reunion concert in London in 2005 called celebtation day when they were in their 60's you should try Kashmir from that, age is no limit when you are this talented. 20 million people wanted tickets for that concert. Jimmy Page is 80 now and is still the coolest man on the planet. You are going to be very pleasantly suprised- by everything they did.

Bonham used to play jazz which explains how comfortable he is with shifts in what he's playing. A lot of drummers that emerged in the late 60s in the UK had jazz training because when they were kids this sort of thing didn't really exist so they learnt jazz and blues.
@darrinanderson3806
@darrinanderson3806 Ай бұрын
John Bonham's drumming is even better on the opening track of their debut album. "Good times bad times" has a base drum thundering out in 4/4 time with triplets pressed in for emphasis. Unlike now, he is doing this with one foot using only one pedal. Fools in the rain is polyrhythmic - He plays the high hat in 4/4 time with swing triplets, intermitting ghost notes with the snare in a 12/8 time. At the SAME time, he plays a half time swing shuffle on the base and snare. Four appendages and two different time signatures at the same time. He keeps this all together despite the bass guitar and 6 string guitar playing a 12/8 signature. Giving this song a syncopated triplet feel. kind of a Latin swing, Perdie shuffle feel.

Robert Plant was from my town in the West Midlands of England, along with many other famous bands and musicians of that era especially. It was a wonderful time for music lovers. Immigrant song was specifically about the Vikings, with their "threshing oars" From the "land of ice and snow" and the "midnight sun" emigrating around the Northern Hemisphere, also referring to the Hammer (of Thor).

There are so many kick ass Rock Songs that you all now reactors do not know about! The 70’s had so many Rock Hits and it continued in the 80’s! Zeppelin, Sabbath, The Who, Stones, Deep Purple, ZZ Top, Thin Lizzy, Kansas, Heart… and the 80’s Van Halen, Def Leppard, Guns and Roses(not a fan), Poison, Skid Row, 90’s Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM, Nirvana, not a big fan of the rest of the 90’s. Follow it all because what’s now was started back then! The Band carrying the torch and passing them all is the Warning!!!

If your jumping into Zeppelin...Madison Square Garden 1973 - LIVE is widely considered vintage Zeppelin....."Since Ive Been Loving You; No Quarter; Rainsong; Moby Dick; Song Remains The Same..." seriously...the entire show is a master class in Rock n Roll virtuoso.

This song kicks so much ass! Hail to the ASA Gods of the North! "We are your Overlords!" I love when you do a dissection of the lyrics after the song! Keep doing that!

Yes Led Zeppelin is the best, as is The Doors, Credence Clearwater Revival, but have you seen Stevie Ray Vaughan the best guitarist of all time, a magician, the only guitarist to do covers of Jimi Hendrix and had Jimi smiling down from heaven ! Try Stevie Ray Vaughan do Texas Flood Live at the El Mcambo. But yes everything Led Zeppelin did was stellar including Stairway to Heaven. I was a teen when all these masters came on the scene. 😊

Hi Rosalie, I especially liked your review and breakdown of the lyrics at the end of this video. It added another in-depth dimension to the review. I could see that you were enjoying the guitar solo. Nice one!!, Leslie ❤

This was written in Iceland after the 1st concert in a tour....The band was so impressed by the hospitality they recieved, it inspired them to write a song about the ancestors of that island nation whom had also played a large role in the history of their own land.

Welcome to Zeppelin. Apart from their masterwork, Stairway to Heaven, to get the full range of their brilliance, you have to do Kashmir, Going to California, Rock & Roll, and Ramble On.
