I was at this concert back in 1973 at the ripe old age of 17. It was at Madison Square Garden in New York City. We got pretty stoned (on Kona Gold), I lost the coin toss and had to drive us all home back across the Hudson River to New Jersey! I agree with you that all music has its place, but back then I feel there was more skill and more dedication to the craft.

On the studio version of Stairway, that flute sounding instrument is John Paul Jones playing an instrument called a Recorder. Look it up. In this live version JPJ plays the recorder sound on the keyboard. Jimmy Page has numerous guitars he plays on different songs, including acoustic guitars. His main instrument of choice is his 1959 Gibson Les Paul electric guitar he bought from Joe Walsh of solo fame and of the Eagles. On this live performance Jimmy page is playing his double neck Gibson electric guitar. The upper neck is a 12 string guitar, and the lower is a 6 string. He uses the 6 string for the solos. Don Felder of the Eagles also plays a double neck Gibson 12/6 on the hit Hotel California. Led Zeppelin is the greatest rock band of all time. Nobody else comes close, and there are so many other legendary amazing bands as well. That’s how good they are. John Bonham is the drummer and he is the greatest rock drummer of all time. Enjoy your Led Zeppelin journey. I recommend song number one of their very first album and going forward from there.

I’m not 100% sure if Jimmy’s is wired the same, but Don Felder of the Eagles has the same guitar but white. They are completely separate each having their own cord plugged into the body. Just roll on the volume knob and it’s active. No switch.

@Jack Alan we are both right. It had been a long time since I watched this interview of don Felder. You’re right, it is switched. I’m right that it has 2 separate outputs. 2 different amp setups for the 6 and 12. Watch this interview. Skip to 11:40 for the Doubleneck explanation. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qrJ9fayX0se6qoE.html

Once upon a time , you had to have great talent to make it in rock and roll. The flute sound is the bassist playing keyboards and bass pedals with his feet. Yes , that is a double neck guitar. 12 string top and 6 string bottom. Crutial to this song. That particular guitar is deemed priceless.

This band was an absolute all star band! You had Jimmy Page on shredding on a double neck guitar, you had John Bonham on Drums (one of the best drummers to ever sit in from of a drum set) you had Robert Plant's soul filled vocals. and John Paul Jones.
@martinschwartz3438
@martinschwartz3438 3 жыл бұрын
Great reaction👍, the instrument played by Jimmy Page is a Gibson double neck 18 string guitar (the top neck is a 12 string guitar & the bottom neck is a regular Gibson LesPaul 6 string electric guitar). The instrument accompanying the guitar and vocals at the beginning is in fact a synthesizer imitating a flute and it is played by the bassist/keyboardist John Paul Jones. If you notice throughout the beginning there is no bass because he's busy on the keyboard and there is also no drums wich is rare in a song by a hard rock band. I believe the song first appeared on their fourth album in 1971 so 50 years ago. The album was untitled but it's commonly called Led Zeppelin IV. The first three being officialy titled Led Zeppelin I, II & III. As a teen they were my favourite band and I was supposed to see them live, as their first show of their North American tour was scheduled for October 17th, 1980 in my hometown of Montréal, Québec, Canada. On September 24th, 1980 Led Zeppelin had their last rehearsal in preparation for the tour, to be followed by a three week vacation before the show in Montréal. During that day the drummer of the band, John Bonham drank a large amount of Vodka, as it was his daily habit. Unfortunately, the morning of September 25th his wife Pat Phillips found him dead. He was 32 and left his wife Pat, a son Jason aged 14 and a daughter Zoé aged 5. In October the autopsy and inquest revealed the cause of death as an accidental death, during his sleep and after midnight, due to pulmonary aspiration (vomitting and choking by breathing in the vomit into his lungs), it also revealed that during his last 24 hours he had consumed 1,4 litres of 40 % Vodka but no other drugs. The tour was cancelled and in December, 1980 after an 11 year existence Led Zeppelin announced that in honour of John's memory and by respect for him and his remaining family members that Led Zeppelin was disbanding and would never tour again as Led Zeppelin. 40 years has past since and Led Zeppelin is still in the top 5 bands having sold the most albums alongside The Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd. John's and Pat's daughter Zoé is a singer/songwriter who appears at Led Zeppelin conventions and their son Jason is a drummer who played with the bands Black Country Communion, UFO, Foreigners and Bonham. On 15th May, 1988 Led Zeppelin reunited for a five song set as the last act of Atlantic Records 40th anniversary Show at Madison Square Garden in New-York city. Led Zeppelin members was formed of the three remaining members Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass/keyboard) and Jason Bonham (drums). The four of them reunited again at the O2 arena on December 10th, 2007 for their only full length concert in the 40 years since John's death. So every single concert that Led Zeppelin performed since the creation of the band in 1969, a Bonham was at the drums. Also both Zoé and Jason were accompanying the three remaining members when Led Zeppelin was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. In the film there's an incerpt showing Jason Bonham, aged 4, playing drums, that incerpt is an excerpt from a 1970 Bonham family movie. I hope you'll enjoy these infos. Cheers from Montréal 🇨🇦🇲🇶🙂🇲🇶🇨🇦

Led Zeppelin used the mobile studio unit of the Rolling Stones, another band formed in London. John Paul Jones played the mellotron keyboard on the flute setting. Two years before, Paul McCartney played it in his and John Lennon's Strawberry Fields Forever. In the studio version, JPJ plays bass guitar.In live concerts, JPJ does not; he plays bass pedals as the substitute. The organ, synth or keyboard acts as a substitute for a guitar.

Double neck guitar. "Instrument moments" as you said were pretty common in this era and still today with bands that play this style. Rock and progressive rock bands with roots and influences from the 1960s and and 1970s still have these moments. Also, Led Zeppelin does have catchy songs with chorus and verse and chorus and verse so you'll find some of their songs like that.

Jimmy Page is playing what is known as a double neck guitar. The top part has twelve strings and the bottom part has six strings. It is to get different tones and you can tell on the softer lighter parts of the song he is playing the 12 string and then in the solo he'll switch to the standard 6 string. As someone who grew up with this music I just love your reaction and thoughts and how you can appreciate lasting classics of the past. ;)

@@Hannahhh It's not much harder than playing a single guitar to be quite honest. The 12 string in a sense is tuned just like a six string but each major sting [just as a normal six string] has an accompanying minor/lighter gauge string that is harmonically tuned to it's major string, and is placed right next to each other. so essentailly it feels like a six string but covering a wider part of your finger tips. All the double neck is doing is having you to not have to physically change guitars in the middle of a song but rather having both guitars already on you for quick transitions, kind of like how keyboardists has different keyboards stacked together. The band Rush uses these a lot in their live shows where the guitarist has a same setup and the Bass player/singer also has a double neck but on his the top is a standard 4 string Bass and the bottom is a standard 6 string guitar,,, now THAT is a bit different in being two completely different instruments in one.

How Stairway to Heaven was written. This is a link to James Patrick Page explaining his thoughts on the composition. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eqqfZ6Zylpmwko0.html He refers to Johann Sebastian Bach having an influence. Incidentally Bach's music was largely forgotten or not performed for many years after his death. I myself think the song follows a similar progression of the music to Maurice Ravel's "Bolero".

Think jimmy is playing a double neck Gibson SG, classic cut. top neck is 12 stringed. bottom neck is 6 strings. saves the halting song for him switching guitars. Not easy playing lead guitar on a 12 string, usually a 12 string acoustic guitar is detuned a semi-tone to release the tension on the neck that the extra strings do. i know every note on this track and few others, but dang how good are they.. i could spent weeks discussing Zep and how AWESOME THEY ALL WERE in own right on own chosen insruments but i see you appreciate class when u see/listen to it. ROCK ON.

It's 2 guitars in 1. The top is a 12 string guitar. the bottom is 6 string. Jimmy needs both for this song. Keeps him from having to change guitars back and forth.

Hannahh,, Its called a double neck guitar. The top neck has twelve strings which creates a more harmonious sound and the bottom neck has 6 strings which is used for lead solo's and harsher/harder direct rhythms.. Double neck guitars are not used much by todays artists..

Jimmy Page is considered one of the greatest guitarists ever in rock history. Believe it or not, there is a video on YT of him playing in a skiffle* band in 1957, when he was only 13 years old, on a popular TV show back then (he's the guitar player on the left): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m91-f8Rzzba2iWw.html After he finished school he became a session guitarist for some recording studios in London up until 1966; when he became a member of the band The Yardbirds. Not long after he joined, the band got to make an appearance in a famous Michelangelo Antonioni art film called "Blow Up". Fun Fact: When the band dissolved in 1968, Page took control of the band's affairs, got three new members, then played a couple of contractual gigs as The New Yardbirds before they changed the name of the band to Led Zeppelin. Here's the scene they're in, where they play in this psychedelic nightclub; Page is about 22 years old, and is all the way on the left side of the stage. (btw the other guitarist smashing up his guitar in frustration is this other rock guitar legend named Jeff Beck): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJdopKZ8s7K1lIE.html * = Skiffle was kind of an early precursor to rock & roll that a bunch of 60s bands, including the Beatles, all played when they were kids in the 50s; Kind of a combination of country and folk.

My favourite Led Zeppelin song. A hip hop guy does a fairly decent remix to this song, best I could compare the rap to. Is Columbine masacre Fun fact, they almost got sued for this song. The judge told them to play the first few notes. They did. The judge dropped the court case.
