The Rain Song is a true masterpiece. Out of respect I was almost afraid to go near it, but here we are. 🙂Quite a lot of legwork on this one!

I have long been a proponent of more fully incorporating the pedal steel guitar into other genres, especially rock 'n' roll. Your selection of The Rain Song makes the case - this is the potential that I have been "hearing" for years. I agree with other commenters that you might want to work up the whole piece. Do this and you just might start a movement. Played with sensitivity, soul, and respect - Great job!!!

Thanks so very much! Playing the steel while exploring genres, other than the "obvious" one is probably my favorite thing to do. A steel guitar is a highly versatile instrument, and I like to try and show people that. Exploring is great practice because it tends to keep me "sharp", and I regularly end up finding something I hadn't thought of before. I practice a LOT to country music as well, of course, because I always loved the genre. But I think it's also possible to move into more unfamiliar territory and see what I find.

I always wonder how does steel guitar make that cool whaling noise like country? I have a lap steel and sounds nothing like that. Is there a special pedal for that?
@ramblinrogers
@ramblinrogers 2 ай бұрын
I think the pedals have something to do with it, definitely. That classic "bend" sound is pretty characteristic for country music. Whenever I play lap steel, I find myself playing it a little differently. I often end up sounding more "bluesy" - this probably has a lot to do with the tuning I'm using. :)

@ramblinrogers
@ramblinrogers 5 күн бұрын
@@mandarian87 thank you! I’m using a standard E9 tuning (B D E F# G# B E G# D# F#), and what’s known as the Emmons setup, or “copedent” for the foot pedals and knee levers. 4 foot pedals and 6 knee levers are linked to the E9 “portion” of this guitar. 🙂

Any reason why you didn't finish the song? I nearly fell off my chair when you faded to black. Also, can you explain the foot action? How does it come into play? Bends? Notes? Just a superb job, RR. Just stumbled on this video after seeing another version of TRS last night (Chiara Kitchling). Thanks, algorithm!

Hi and thank you very much! Glad you liked it. I did not record the entire song due to the fact I didn't sit down and learn the rest of it - yet! This was sort of an experiment, to see if I could make the main theme sound decent on a pedal steel guitar. It seems many people like what they are hearing, so I wouldn't rule it out if I ended up recording the entire song. I'm a bit of an odd duck when it comes to the pedal steel I suppose. I'm basically completely self-taught, learning by trial and error and always by ear. Reading notation/tabs and studying seems to pose a problem for me - I just can't absorb the information fast enough. So I know surprisingly little about the theory behind both the instrument and the music I play - This of course makes it near impossible to explain how I actually play something! The idea behind a pedal steel though, is that there are several foot pedals on the floor, plus several knee levers (mounted underneath the main body). The function of these pedals and knee levers is to either raise or lower one or several strings, typically a half or a whole step. This will open up a lot of different possibilities harmonically. Even though I have been playing steel guitar for many years now, I still discover something new quite often. It really is a fascinating instrument, and one of my favorite things to do is to experiment on other genres than country music. I do love country music, but I can't help myself from experimenting with other genres!

@@ramblinrogers Wow. That was an impressive read. I'm jealous, in that I just can't seem to translate my ear for music into making the notes flow. I can't read music well, nor can I listen to a song and translate it to the fretboard. I need to be shown. I think aurally, but learn visually, and then by getting my hands "dirty". I've long been fascinated by the sound (and construction) of the pedal steel. The dobro, also. I had one for a while, but found it tough to play, so I sold it. I look forward to Part 2 of The Rain Song, and any other fare that you choose to offer us listeners. Thanks for the in-depth response. I'm ramblin' now....cheers!
@ramblinrogers
@ramblinrogers 8 ай бұрын
@@canadianroot It's interesting how you put it, because I usually say I have a visual way of thinking. It's become sort of second nature that when I hear something, I automatically start visualizing how to play it. That's why I never learn the lyrics on a song, even if I've heard that song hundreds of times. Because my focus is solely on the guitar/steel guitar! On regular guitar it's been like this for many years, and as I've gotten to know the pedal steel better, the same thing has started happening there as well. It takes a lot of time before this kicks in though. The good thing about playing an instrument is there are so many different ways of learning, and we can choose the way that suits us best.
@canadianroot
@canadianroot 8 ай бұрын
@@ramblinrogers I admire your determination. A bit jealous, though. :D To be self-taught on an instrument like the pedal steel is commendable, to say the least. For me, having music on the brain all day long, and not having the level of skill (I know....Practice! Practice!) to be able to play at the upper end of the spectrum is frustrating. Maybe it's my ADHD. Either that or it's the ADHD. I eagerly await the next upload, RR. Have a good one!
