On August 14, 1985, a concert of GRP artists was held in the big room at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. It was recorded for both audio and video release. The lineup was Dave Grusin (keyboards), Lee Ritenour (guitar), Dianne Schuur (vocals), Dave Valentin (flute), Ivan Lins (keyboards, vocals), Larry Williams (keyboards, sax), Abraham Laboriel (bass), and Carlos Vega (drums). A special guest, Phil Perry, was brought in to sing on Lee Ritenour's "Countdown" at the end of the show.
This single concert was released to the public in several variations - none of them complete. There was a CD called "GRP Live in Session" and a video called "GRP Live in Session", with identical covers but different tracks. Then there were two releases under the names "GRP All-Stars Live from the Record Plant" and "Dave Grusin & Lee Ritenour Live at the Record Plant"; those are the two DVD's in this set, and between them, you end up with the whole show, although it's chopped up and resequenced.See the this link: • GRP All-Stars Live Fro...
I've been hoping for years that there would be a single release of the entire show, end to end and in original sequence, but I've stopped holding my breath. Still, with this set, you can experience a rare combination of incredible talent, inspired performances, and exquisite sound & video quality. Get it before they take it off the market again (maybe to be chopped apart and mixed into some new combo package....).

I watched this with my dad when this came out on Laser Disc. He passed away this May, and I’ve been watching it almost daily, I miss him. Dave Grusin was his favorite, and mine as well since I was young. Ivan Lins voice and energy is brings me comfort.

Who in the hell in their right mind would give this a thumbs down?? This is 80s jazz fusion at its finest and the Ritenour/Grusin combination is timeless. These guys are still jammin with each other and Dave is 84!! These are the kinda guys that get better all the time!!

Dave Grusin and Lee Rittenour are each amazing in their own rights. Together, they are a powerhouse. I just saw them perform together last weekend at the Catalina Club in L.A.. Grusin's fingers still amazing at age 87. And now with Wes Rittenour on drums, it's sure to be a great tour. My favorite cut is "Rit Variations." Mind-blowing! Still trying to learn it..

Randall Ulmer Wow, I would have given anything to have seen him. And I had the chance to but wasn't able, and just when I started to listen to everything he did, we lost him. Glad you got to see him Randall, I bet it was great. He did so much and expended no energy. I still to this day watch his every move. And I'm a keyboardist buddy! Go figure! Good hearing from you Randall...Hope you are well!

+Rich Green Great Drummer and also he was a very humble and nice guy RIP, my dad (also a drummer) told me a story that he once went to a show in LA and Alex Acuna was announced as the band drummer but for some reason he was not able to make it to the show (my dad asked around if Alex was going to be able to make it) so Carlos Vega filled in for him and at the time my dad didn't knew him and was blown out by his playing. After the show Carlos Vega approached my dad and apologized that Alex Acuna had not made it (I guess he heard him asking around) and my dad was like no worries! hehehe that he loved his playing and was leaving very happy after seeing him perform! Carlos was also visibly happy after my dad's comments and thank him! (wow, talk about a great player and very humble and down to earth)

Daniel Muñoz Hey Daniel, Thanks for that! And thank you for writing me, great story man! How cool was that! Your Dad sounds like a good man and I am sure an awesome musician as well. I wish I knew what the hell happened there. What was going on with Carlos that made him commit suicide? That guy had so much feel and was an incredible drummer. We lost a good man and in my opinion, one of the better drummers of our time. I always loved that guy and he and Dave Weckl were always my favorite drummers. Although I have played I am a keyboardist by trade but drums are a close favorite. Do you know what was up with him to make him go over the edge like that? Anyway, great to hear from you and thanks so much for sharing that with me. Are you a drummer? You have good taste brother! Take care my friend! Rich.

+Rich Green I agree, we definitively lost a good man and a great drummer, I would never begin to understand what would drive someone to do what he did, it's very sad.... I actually play guitar myself, but growing up with a Drummer has made me more appreciative of all other instruments. Take care as well!

Days of concerts of this type are long gone... No more jazz gigs... No more original music band's gigs anymore. No more instrumental music gigs, no recordings of this type, no perspectives for young aspiring artists to find any outlets... sad. I almost lost hope entirely. Only re-visiting productions from 30-40 years ago, reflecting on past-times is a thing to do for a musician these days, I guess. Wonderful video, wonderful memories of GREATNESS and audiences appreciation.

Orlandao - I forgot to mention tha backstory...my wife who worked as a sales executive for EMI in Melbourne came home with these two promotional samplers for the launch of GRP and I was hooked and I have followed the careers of all the stable ever since. Watching a Phil Perry moved from back-up vocals to a burgeoning solo career has been very satisfying..as well as Ivan Lins and so many others. I also met Chieli MInucci of Special EFX via the sampler last year at the ' Cutting Room' NYC.

The second is ' GRP All Stars - Live from the Record Plant' which as you have explained is a incomplete version of the full concert. So I am rapturous to find this here which completes the story. I was fortunate to attend the 30th Anniversary of GRP in NYC in 2012 at 'Blue Note' and met Lee and Larry Rosen who autographed the DVD !!
