Жыл бұрын

Lee Sung Jin aka Sonny is the brilliant mind behind the hit Netflix series 'Beef', which explores the intersection of revenge, Asian American culture, and coexistence. The Fun with Dumb team had the privilege to sit down with Sonny to break down key scenes in the miniseries and talk about how art imitates life. Covering everything from realism in film making to favorite fast foods, the gang shares testimonies and laughs in this exclusive episode of FWD. Beware however, this podcast contains spoilers. Go watch the show before tuning in!

Beef is the best writing ive seen from television in years. The way it gave every single character a moment of empathy was beautiful. The class struggle is there, but it doesnt fall into the trap of the underdog against thr evil rich.

Holy Crap. I just tried to talk to my parents about my childhood trauma and beatings and they say they have no recollection or I'm making it worse than it is. It pissed me off because the memory has burned into my mind for 30 years.

I was logging into Netflix when I saw the cover of BEEF on the homepage. I am a big Steven Yeun fan since his Walking Dead days so I was just going to watch the trailer before watching another show. That trailer led to me watching the 1st episode and I got a few episodes in before I realized how invested in the show I became. I was hooked. The story reminded me so much of this Argentine movie called 'Wild Tales', which shares that "karma is a b****" theme. And since the show is created by a Korean and the POV is through the lens of a Korean American, it felt pretty relatable to me coming from an immigrant background myself. 5 out of 5 stars. Can't wait for season 2.

This Writer/Director believes that he is writing the “Asian experience”. But, every ethnic group I know has these exact same stories, particularly immigrants. I cannot emphasize enough how he captured the vulnerability of human beings in the most profound way. The script unfolds like a Nina Simone album. It’s beautiful. This movie/series was a historical masterpiece. Well done Sir. Well done

A pleasant and well-educated Korean American celebrity chef who is very American but cherishes her heritage and introduces it to everyone in a positive light. So much angst and resentment against immigrant parents and Asian heritage among Asian American scripted shows now.

The worship scene in church was awesome and authentic. I was so glad and appreciative that they didn't use it to dump on Christianity. Respect. The emotions you experience during praise and or prayer are you being in communion with Jesus and the holy spirit it's Not art like you said. It's when the anointing comes over you. Never ever heard someone call praise Art before. It's spiritual you just enter into that realm.

I think Crazy Rich Asians absolutely paved the way (to some degree) for both Everything Everywhere and Beef. Funny enough, it went from old country story, to story about immigrant parents to “our” generation story and without having to be a “this is who we are” ethnicity definition story. Justin Lin said when he made Better Luck Tomorrow that he was sick having to justify Asian American faces on screen, that we live here so we can just be ourselves on screen without having to explain our existence. That was 2002. It’s almost like Beef is the modern realization of that kinda story. It’s funny that Sung thinks Parasite had more to pave the way for Beef since it’s a Korean movie in Korea. Vibe wise maybe it’s more similar to Beef and maybe Parasite also contributed to the normalization of Asian faces on screen more but it was CRA and EEAAO are Asian American stories and so is Beef (even though it’s a story to stand on its own).
@Clyde_Ono
@Clyde_Ono Жыл бұрын
I agree with the girl that Beef was unique and like it’s own genre and I get why the Koreans are feeling the Korean aspects to it but it’s also much deeper (or has more layers) than “K-American drama” ( I know Dumb is half joking there) but Ali’s mom I believe was revealed to be Vietnamese but her Dad was clearly born or raise in the US. Also George’s family is also multi-generationally American. His Japanese Mom also appeared to be American born. Funny that Ali’s real life (ex) husband was also (part) Japanese and had a famous/rich Dad too.

Lots of interesting stuff here! On the subject of therapy, a good enough therapist should be able to tell when a person is seeking approval and not reinforce that behavior by giving approval for appropriate responses. They should be able to help the person address that need and behavior and model healthy interactions through the therapeutic relationship instead. But with the bulk of therapists being petty awful, it's hard to find one that's really qualified and capable of this. They do exist though!
