Read the description below:
Lee Trevino controlled the ball as well as anyone ever, preferring a low fade with the longer clubs, and was a master with the wedge. What jumps out about his golf swing, other than his idiosyncratic alignment, is the massive bend he produces in his posture as he swings, which should have long ago put to rest the conventional notion that it is a good idea to "maintain posture" during the swing.

Thanks Wayne ! I got a chance to be with Lee 2 years ago. To this day, I've never seen someone have the control over the ball like Lee did. Also, he knew exactly what he was doing at every point in his golf swing. He would call shots and execute them perfectly. His wedge play was spectacular. It was a memory of a lifetime !

The year I turned pro (1978) I caddied at about 12 events at the PGA Tour and, thanks to some friends in common, I had the privilege of watching Lee very closely. From there now, I´ve never seen anybody (and I think I.ve seen them all) to hit the golf ball so pure and neat. Thanks for sharing your work!

Insightful and intelligent commentary by obviously a real student of the game, on a wonderful striker of the ball who is probably unparalleled since Ben Hogan.

One thing that never gets mentioned is with an open stance and square shoulders it lets the golfer swing at the target which automatically creates an inside out swing path without thinking about it. Most amateurs have a hard time swinging right of target because the subconscious thinks it needs to swing at the target which creates an out to in path. With an open stance just swing to the target which automatically becomes swinging to right field.

Thank you very much for the reply. I have a very difficult time swinging left enough in a square stance I find it much easier to clear into my left side with a slightly open and flared left side. It works very well for me 0.0 USGA Index and saves me a lot of chiropractic work! I think I will stick with it and work on some more putting from now on. I will be signing up for a membership on your sight to check out more material thanks!

Everyone forgets to mention how far back he plays the ball in his stance. This prevents hooks and lets him get incredible compression.

i had a once in a lifetime chance to spend time with Lee and he is such a savant. At 70 years old or whatever he is, he still has better mechanics than most PGA players. I am not completely sure if he knows exactly why he does the things he does in his golf swing but he does almost everything right. He explanation is that if you can square the back of your left hand at impact and you have a good grip, you can square the face. Thanks Wayne for all your work

I remember reading that Lee Trevino used to have a swing thought of getting his right pocket past the ball at impact - I, too, when young and fit, used to try this, but would not recommend you do it as it puts tremendous pressure on your back and often leads to the "reverse C" position! By standing open - nearer the target line - he felt he could keep the club and club-face "on the target line" longer than most other tour players.

Is there any golf instructor that looks at the golf swing ENTIRELY from a “physics” standpoint? I can’t think of a single one. Would like to hear from a golf instructor that describes all the physics effects in a (good) golf swing. Of course there might be several competing (good) swing systems.

I saw Tom Watson speak a number of years ago. He told a great story about watching Trevino on the driving range. A group of young pros were about to bet Trevino he couldn't hit the 100 yard sign. Watson told the kids Trevino could hit that sign until it fell over...they needed to pick out one of the zeros on the sign or else lose all their money.

So Lee basically hit a block shot? If so, it makes sense he would be consistent. Very little face rotation in a blocked shot.

con't: Lee goes into a squat position at the start of his downswing whereby his left knee separates from his right and there is no right knee drive at the start of the downswing because the left knee and midsection are unwinding hard away from the right side and then the squat motion is achieved, followed by the right side driving the left hip around. So the initial move is not a right sided drive but a left sided unwind followed by a right side drive. I do this move and recognize it too.

question. 6 handicap here. completely transformed my swing this year. range and video every day. im extremely similar to travino in that: im short. i take it outside and drop it inside into the "slot" almost identically. my hips dont get quite as deep as him or hogan at impact, but i "squat" down to get it right on the shaft plane. i saw some 1 draw a line through fowlers ear & torso and they show him rotate round it perfectly. when i dip, my ear moves off the line towards ball few inches. bad?

Lee won 29 events, including six majors, and then added another 29 wins on the senior tour. He hurt his back along the way but do not think that hurt was from his swing, more likely from lightning in 1975 Oak Brook Western Open (hit his umbrella, Lee later commented he should have had a 0ne iron instead as even god can not hit a one iron )although he did win the 1984 PGA tournament that after having a disk removed in 1976 which lessened his power. Read that he went from an open stance as depicted in this video to a closed stance later to lessen back problems.

Seems to be okay to slide the hips if you are keeping a good bend in the waist, upper torso bent over, and the right elbow near the right side well down into the downswing (that, and a nice weakish left grip).

I should have said "better putter". Lee's excellent short game took pressure off his putting and boosted is putting stats. By his own admission he struggled with longer puts and wished he was a better "lag putter". Lee was a dominant force in the 70's no doubt about it. 22 wins and 4 majors in that decade alone.

Of course Trevino was one of the great ball strikers of all time. Watching his swing in slow motion and the way that he dips his head and shoulders to keep the clubface on line on the downswing, it's pretty clear why he ultimately developed back problems.

Awesome video Mr. D! How many degrees open were Lee's feet at address? Also how did he ever hit draws with such an open stance? I Hit the ball great with an open stance it allows me to slide left and ease my hip and back. I have taken a few lessons with instructors and they constantly ask me to square up which leads to big blocks... Is an open stance ok or not!?

Wayne, I think you should have pointed out also that Lee is straightening his right leg on his backswing. This is something that Sam Snead did as well. And the secret move with his elbow moving inward at the start of the downswing which flattens the plane is also something that Hogan did. Now there is one thing I disagree with your analysis with the way Lee started his downswing. Looking at Lee's swing, it is apparent to me that he uses a very similar downswing motion that Sam Snead used.

Wayne, love your item-by-item analysis, but isn't fair to say that all Lee is trying to do is deliver the club on or below the original shaft plane? Seems unlikely in 1965 that he could have had much more in mind.
@jimralston4789
@jimralston4789 2 жыл бұрын
By setting up open, he would take away slightly outside and then during the transition would start with a lateral move with his feet/knees/hips and let the centrifugal force of that weight shift bring his arms back inside and get the club right into the slot. It was an outside backswing looped back inside on the downswing. On the downswing, his head always stayed behind the ball and he would rotate around it with his shoulder plane getting steeper than almost anyone else. The body action going the ball allowed the closed clubface to square up at impact but still be delofted to give a penetrating trajectory. He could shape shots any way he wanted to, but just like Hogan, he hit an ultra-accurate cut the majority of the time.
@jetviser
@jetviser 11 ай бұрын
@@jimralston4789 But the key that is not that obvious is at P2 he hinges the club inside his hands and keeps it there through the release, a' la JohRahm. It's not obvious because the hands and handle work outside. If you start and stay with that hinge, the rest (what WayneD focuses on mostly) is easy to work out with trial and error. [Of course, you have to have the genius (in 1970) to know what are the variables to try.]

@TheNYgolfer

Lee's swing is all about TRAPPING the ball. This was the result of playing on courses like Tenison Park in Texas with it's hardpan fairways. "Trapping" is the most consistent way to play off hardpan. Lee's "aiming left" had nothing to do with back problems. It was his way of making sure that he approached the ball from inside out. So he was what he calls a "blocker". He had to block or the ball would go left. This guy in my opinion was second to NONE from 125 yards in. If only he could putt

Would have loved to see him in his prime. A shame that he didn't win at Augusta. As great of a ball striker Lee was, he was admittedly a low ball hitter, never much of a long iron player, had difficulty drawing the ball and was an average putter (not that he didn't put well at times). . .just a few reasons why perhaps Lee didn't win the Masters. Nonetheless, he had an exceptional short game to compliment his accuracy off the tee. I'm sure he hit it pure 99% of the time.

@jakemitchell1671
@jakemitchell1671 5 жыл бұрын
MPForged x: you can find reasons to explain anything in the world, and it will sound convincing. It's my opinion that none of the factors you mentioned explain why Lee didn't win the Masters. And Lee's contemporaries would debate every point. Trevino's long iron game was plenty good. Lesser long iron players won at Augusta. You think Charl Schwartzel hits a 3 iron better than Lee Trevino in his prime? Mike Weir? Mark O'Meara? His putting was more than sufficient. And let me assure everyone - because I've seen it with my own eyes - it's an absolute MYTH that Trevino "couldn't draw the ball." It's true that the fade was his bread and butter. But EVERY world class player on the planet can draw, fade, hook, slice...hit it low, high, medium...hard, soft...and everything in between. IMHO, the main reason Trevino didn't win the Masters was self-doubt and a sincere bias against Augusta. According to several of Lee's contemporaries, Trevino didn't think his game fit the course, and history is very clear that Trevino despised the elitism and racism that characterized the membership and leadership of the Augusta National Golf Club.

@@scottsanders2641 Uh, no, semantics has nothing to do with it. A fade is a shot that starts left of the target line and curves back to the target. A block/push is a straight shot that starts right of the target line and stays right.

And as we all should know through common sense, Lee never thought about any of the stuff mentioned in this analysis mechanics wise. He hit the stupid ball. He played a 15 yard fade off the tee and probably 7 yards with irons, that's why he aimed left, not because of swing mechanics. He was a feel player, he absolutely couldn't give a care about swing mechanics. I personally hit a towering fade, and my swing is damn ugly. But hell, whatever works. I'm considered the best ball striker in my club, and really, I don't think about my swing at all. All this swing stuff is nice, but you gotta play the game at some point. Short game is more important anyhow.
@wdefrancesco
@wdefrancesco 5 жыл бұрын
Lee actually authored a quite detailed book on his personal method. He had reasons for doing what he did. Most great players would tell you that they didn't think much about what they were doing when competing. That's what thousands of hours of practice and a lot of positive reinforcement from success allows you to do.
@wx811
@wx811 5 жыл бұрын
@@wdefrancesco Well, that makes sense. You do have to work at it consciously in practice, but on the course it's all go. Lee was self taught anyway, I doubt most of his mechanical thoughts in practice would work for more than half a percent of people. But that's just my opinion, I may be wrong.

I guess I don't quite understand Trevino's idiosyncratic method. Why didn't he just weaken his grip and play the ball back in his stance if he wanted to play a low fade. He really seems to be reaching for it at set up. Isn't it easier to hit a fade with the ball closer to you? I'm surprised he didn't just hit straight pulls. Obviously he made it work. And he didn't give a damn about convention or aesthetics. I do have a hard time watching professionals with esoteric swings. For example I find it very hard to watch Jim Furyk because he stands so close to the ball with his hands almost touching his legs. I know he's a tall guy but Jeez. For God's sake, Jim. K.J. Choi also has a swing that looks like a typical weekend golfer--- but he makes it work somehow. Golf his way.
