Start a new city WITHOUT MODS, including on PS4 or Xbox, and have a PROFITABLE city instantly in this new MORE MONEY LESS TRAFFIC series!
Would you like to play Cities: Skylines without running out of money? Are you frustrated because your cities get choked with traffic?
In Part 2 I'll show how to start our new city on the "Seven Lakes" map following the plan we introduced in Part 1. How much should you build to start out? What's a good build order? Should you go with a Water Pump Station or a Water Tower to start? Are Wind Turbines the best power to start off, or is a Coal Power Plant a better way to go? We'll find the answers, and we'll learn many other money-saving tips to get any new city off to a great start with a heavy wallet!
In this tutorial series, you'll learn how to get started with a solid bank account and grow your city large enough that you'll never have to worry about money again. As the city expands, we'll show you how to use good urban design strategies to avoid crippling traffic problems. We'll only use the vanilla game and DLCs so console players can follow along too!

I've been watching your old series and just want to reiterate what everyone's said: I like how you explain why you're doing everything, without assumptions for new players. I also feel that a lot of players rely on highways or perfect interchanges (that take up tons of space) to achieve low traffic. But you're showing that fundamental knowledge of the game mechanics and real life design can help me make cities that look real and are built smart. Keep it up!

Thanks! 😊 That’s my message for sure! You’ll hear me say it more and more, but high traffic flow percentages are mostly just for bragging rights. If traffic is moving and not backing up, then you’re doing just fine 😉

I already love this series. I used to watch Sam Bur but got tired of his know-it-all attitude towards the game. He never explained why he does something and just shows off his flowing traffic. You actually explained each step in your thinking and it makes so much more sense. I've played this game for 4 years now and had countless failed cities and you taught me more about the game in this one video than I learned just playing the game. Please keep this series going because this will help many people including me.
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
WarriorsMustang17 oh I most certainly intend to! Thanks so much! Sam has had some good stuff on his channel, I catch some of it from time to time. I find that there’s a dearth of American KZfaqrs, so I thought it would be nice to show a totally different spin on the game that didn’t include a zillion roundabouts or highways everywhere, since hardly anyone plays that way. I’m really excited to get up to a larger city when the traffic and public transportation gets more complicated! I think it will shed a lot of insight on how effective certain types of urban design can be when implemented well. The conventional wisdom on grids is that they don’t work, and it seems like using traffic lights instead of roundabouts is considered a sin 😂. I don’t play that way AT ALL, and every time I’ve gotten away from it I have had it bite me in the bottom! So I try to find the principles that really matter, that underpin everything instead of just one particular philosophy, and share them as simply and as fun as possible. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@daveyfunk
@daveyfunk 3 жыл бұрын
Sam has a huge knowledge and I like how he does things but he doesn't play the game as intended. I like to see what I can do without mods first and that's how you get to know the game and the AI behaviour. Mods might make it more 'realistic' but not when you're removing traffic lights all over the place, artificially forcing traffic where to go etc. The AI is poor in this game but there are ways of doing things. I'm really interested to see how this guy continues this series as the level of detail in the first 2 episodes is promising :)
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@daveyfunk I hope Sam knows his stuff, since he actually works in urban planning! He does make things look nice. I really do play with a lot of mods, but I think that the simulator actually works really well for as much as they've simplified the economy so it wouldn't destroy everyone's computers. Even the traffic AI is actually pretty reasonable. I think what really messes most people up is just not understanding the root causes of certain traffic problems. The only time I really get to missing mods in managing traffic is when I want to use TMPE--it makes such a massive difference!
@daveyfunk
@daveyfunk 3 жыл бұрын
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto yeah, I know he's an urban planner, and this gives him a real aspect of hor things are done, but knowledge of the game is lost when someone doesn't get to know that first. I feel T4rget has a great sense of how the game works as he plays without mods and knows how the AI works. You seem to be finding a good middle ground in your new series :)
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@daveyfunk I haven't watched a lot of T4rget, but I agree he knows the game mechanics. I notice that a lot of KZfaqrs just demonstrate...they don't really explain things much. I feel like the fundamental mechanics of the game are important to understand before we can really have a useful conversation about strategy. Even then, it's important to understand _why_ a strategy works...and that often takes some explaining. I'm definitely trying to find that middleground...since explaining without entertaining will tune a bunch of people out. The next video has a lot of that kind of stuff in it...I'm hoping it will land ok. Finance seems to be the most popular thing to mod in this game--by just straight up turning it off :-o
@Chenyu_Huang
@Chenyu_Huang 3 жыл бұрын
I love your approach to the game. A lot of players rely on a billion custom assets and mods, and manually add props everywhere, while their creations are pretty to look at, to me it kind of defeat the purpose of the game. After all, it’s a game of simulation. Understanding the mechanics of the game and real world cities give a much more interesting and unique way to play the game. Your explanation of the game is wonderful and easy to follow, and the pacing is perfect. I really enjoy it. Keep it up!
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
I’m glad you’re enjoying it! Don’t get me wrong-when I play the way I like, I’ve got about 40-50 mods and about 1200-1500 custom assets installed (like in the city in the main title). But I think the base game is great all by itself too, especially with the DLCs. I think the modded experience is much better when you understand the base mechanics...because maybe you don’t mod so much, and you work within the parameters of the simulation rather than avoiding dealing with them. I want my art to be _functional_, not just pretty! Thanks so much for your kind words!

@@daniellxnder I would have agreed with you a lot more until this pandemic happened--when none of the masks or PPE we needed were adequately stockpiled beforehand, and then Just In Time turned into Nowhere Near In Time. I think JIT has its place in certain types of manufacturing for sure, but we could probably use more manufacturing and warehouse capacity for certain things--like medical supplies--in our economy. It also doesn't help how much consolidation has occurred in pretty much every industry. I'd rather have a hundred small meat packing plants than have a dozen really huge ones. BTW...I don't put that on engineers though...I put this on bean counters, who basically run the world economy now. They're all so detached from everything but P+L that the community never gets considered anymore. Engineers are parts of the community--the financial system is so big now, they don't have to care about communities anymore.

But there are sooo many console players out there and so little unmodded YT tutorial series out there that I wanted to help everyone new to the game master the basics and learn how to think about urban design and traffic more clearly. I feel like there’s a lot of hunger for that sort of thing, since consoles can’t use mods/assets. I do find that the base game is still a ton of fun though! Hi Lee, that was really good, i enjoyed your past videos - the original more money less traffic and the intersection "rules" Today's video , the speech , choice of words and explanation of the maths and example is amazing. Earlier this year i watched the 30 min challenge and practiced it myself, it was then i realized the $$$ benefit of initial cheap roads and only the future larger roads to start as 4 laners - i saved a lot up money up front and was able to spend the money on the next milestones for infrastructure Regards George

Thanks so much! I’m glad to hear someone who liked my early stuff likes the format of the new videos! I thought I needed to amp up my quality to get more people watching, and to slim down the length of the videos so people would be more likely to watch-and not have to find their place in an hour-long tutorial. Seems to be working so far! Those cheap roads really do help early on! It saves so much on maintenance!! I’m amazed at how few people use this strategy, but I guess that Unlimited Money is pretty popular. Thanks for commenting, George!

Nice music, Docking Granted, please proceed to landing pad 12 at Jameson Memorial (Elite Dangerous). Warning, retract your hardpoints... Great vid, dirt roads are the great start people forget and having gaps using 4x4 squares for zoning is most efficient for free connections. Space out your people and fill the gaps later, use the zones as cost reducers. Great vid and a great basis to start from superb! Raised motorways later on (6 height) becomes the most efficient with cycle/monorail/rail tucked in between. 500,000 with no traffic issues deeper into the game becomes straight-forward and should remove the need for a costly tube system.

real simple - he doesn't put out enough content for YT to be satisfied, therefore they push his vids towards the bottom or search results, and often won't get recommended. GOOD NEWS though - you (the viewer) can help change that by liking, commenting, subscribing and sharing. I know EVERY YT asks for it, and that's why. All those things help move the video up higher in the algorithm. Generally speaking, once presenters see there's a bigger spike in interest, they may be more inclined to put more videos out, and so on and so on ;)

Hi Lee, pretty new subscriber here - I have finished your older set, and I'm looking forward to this series. I've been playing since March 2020, I have just shy of 700 hours into the game as of August, and I watch WAAAAY too much YT content about cities, LOL. The beauty of this game is that there's (essentially) no *wrong* way to play, and I enjoy how you take things on a little differently than other content creators - it's just a fresh view into the "put another RAB in" type thing, LOL. Do you have a schedule for video uploads, or do you just do them as you want?
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
@Casino thanks! I'm glad to be different :-D and I agree for the most part--lots of different philosophies work well in this game, and none are right or wrong. I do think there are certain problems you can create for yourself (especially when it comes to traffic) but there are always ways out. And don't get me started on roundabouts!!! Anyway...no, I really don't have a schedule on uploads. It takes me quite a lot of time to put together a new video, and then there are real life things I have to take care of that limit my time in production. Lately I'm just focusing on creating quality videos that are informative, fun, and succinct enough that people can't help but watch. My wife doesn't even play the game, and yet she even finds my latest videos entertaining. When even family thinks the game they don't play is interesting, then I figure you're on the right track lol!

Finally someone else that doesnt run highways everywhere as soon as they open. Really, when have you ever saw a "city" of 10-12k pop cut up by 3-4 lane interstates?? (though building complicated interchanges is super fun...but i do that aside from my actual builds). One 4 lane, 4 red lights, and 7 freeways with a bypass loop around the town (I wont start on the overuse of transit also out of place, monorails and subways with 15k ppl....howd the town afford that?). U play with realism in mind i love that as i do as well...and lastly the thing that makes me cringe and stop watching most ppl: Have a problem=round about, like everywhere....dozens in some cases. I play on ps4 so zero fancy traffic managing mods, i get 85% ish traffic in 50k+ pop city with no friggin road doughnuts cluttering up my city. Intersections work just fine if uve a good layout; and i especially hate seeing one way 6-lane roads enter a 2 lane doughnut or a regular 2 lane road go to a 3 lane tiny roundabout...cant ppl do basic addition? 2 cant feed 6, 6 cant fit into 2, and single lane rds w 3 lane cheater wheels dont get all the lanes used anyway. Its painful to watch. Your vids are great man, got urself one more subscriber

Pleeeeeaaaase keep this un-modded as much as possible. The level of detail in these first 2 videos really is promising as to how you'll look to continue. The first video was mind blowing concerning your application of real life grids and how you've looked to apply maths (even though I hate maths!!! :p). I'd love to see how you continue to move this forward and what methods you use with the base game before adding any mods. Would be good to see you look to design a more European inspired design but that's just taste to where I live :)
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Worry not! I will definitely avoid mods for the majority of this series. I want to create a nice primer for vanilla and console players, while covering aspects of urban design and traffic design in general, because it really applies to everyone, modded or not. As for building a more European-style city, I might go there eventually. I may try a few things out with this city when it's big enough to show some different traffic design ideas, and compare how well each works. There are SOOO many European KZfaqrs though, and I know of extremely few North American KZfaqrs who actually build cities the way they are in old urban centers in America. I think it's instructive, and I think it will make for a good contrast when I try to do something that's more like the Old World. Maybe in Series 3 or 4, you'll get your wish!

Awesome! ☺️😂 I can’t believe everyone doesn’t do this! In fact, JUST before they added street naming to the game, I screen grabbed some aerial shots of one of my cities, pieced them together in Photoshop, and then traced and labeled the streets in Illustrator so I could remember the names of them! I was so very happy when they added street naming and then made it so CSL MapView exports them all to a gorgeous map with transit lines even if we want.....ugh...it was heaven! It’s great to find someone else who feels the same way 😃 Thanks for your support!

I think some of your approach is excessively frugal... on the other hand, I've seen enough starting people just get swamped trying to fill in the whole square, that maybe this is needed. But... what I really like is you name your streets and landmarks... because I do too. It kills me that this level of detail/flavour gets over looked by so many people who play the game, because I find it so charming. Looking fotward to your future episodes.
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Lol yes, perhaps! I prepared super hard for this too, because I wanted it to be pretty extreme. I wanted to demonstrate how much money could be saved this way though...because it does pay off. And for console players, since they don’t have any mods, I don’t even know that they can go to unlimited money. So this will make it a lot easier for them to get started. And thanks for the kind words! I really think the default street names are sooo lame 80-90% of the time, so I can’t just leave them. Plus, when I number streets, it’s really fun to see how high I can get them to go. 😁 And honestly, it makes it easier for other players to follow if you can just call out names of what you’re talking about. I was super surprised at how many followed what I did in my last series in their own game...so I thought I’d just keep them in mind so they can do it super easily on this series. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

So, I've got two questions about your style, since it's similar to mine: do you revisit neighbourhoods when the "higher order" zones become available, or build once and leave it? I really enjoy rezoning building by building, as demand says "we need more industrial" or "more commercial" and start rearranging uses. It looks like you already know where everything will go... but your city is starting small, so does it change? As for naming streets... I built a Spanish-Caribbean themed city on Honu Island... got up to 24 before the terrain made a grid impossible. Definitely a brilliant little touch!
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
@@richardb4665 I feel like those two questions merge well into one answer--and that answer is: Oh FOR SURE! :-) You'll see some serious changes coming up, especially as high density becomes available. This starts out small and slow, but mainly because I'm explaining a bunch and because I'm maximizing my cashflow. Right now I'm champing at the bit to get that polluting industrial and power plant off of Broadway! I don't know if you saw my original MMLT series, but I move things around a bit in there. When I play on my own, I move things around in my cities with impunity! That's especially true with low density and industrial zones. I do a lot of rework to add parks and landmarks too. I think I've honestly tried super hard to add a lot of numbered streets one time, and I think I got up to the low 50s before I ran into a river. I haven't worked on that city much...but it is the first city I built that proved what I (and most people) did wrong with zoning industrial, as well as the true power of freight rail. I have been spending time on the city you see in the opening title (New Springfield) for the last year or so, and much of that has been highly detailed...there's a lot area I want to fill in, but it really looks nice with all the rework of hand placing buildings. I would really like to dust off Rogersfield and show how well that city works. It has an embarrassingly overbuilt innerbelt highway though lol...but I think it's worth sharing because the street layout is very different from a lot of cities. I built it quick, so it has a lot of grid, but the metro system works fantastically and it has a set of like 15 or 20 traffic signals that are all coordinated to move traffic through the city center! It's so awesome to go into first-person view and hit EVERY single light green! :-D

5:00 Being careful about angles and using right angles to force it is a great trick. I'll note, however, that while it'll go to 45° if you trigger road bending, you can actually go slightly less than that without anarchy if you're particularly careful about it -- from experimentation it looks like the hard limit is about 42°. (Not that the difference there is almost ever worth caring about.) Speculation: it's easier in code to calculate the *cosine* of the angle between two things, so the threshold might be acos(.75), which is ≈41.4°.
@LeeHawkinsPhoto

Yes, you would be correct! I've been playing with this city for months, it takes time to make the videos though... And while I have planned a lot of this city out, it's not as if everything is set in stone with highways built through. I see a lot of people build out full large downtown areas and they really can't be sure how the traffic will work out. I'll build out a huge street grid, but I'm not going to build giant amounts of highway to handle traffic in it without any idea of what zoning or traffic patterns will be. There's a definite conversation coming up about zoning and traffic...Part 5 will definitely get into this!

As someone who finished engineering and studied a bit of urban planning, I always wanted to play this game with the principle of lean construction, but often fails to do so maybe due to the pacing of the game, if that makes sense. What I mean is that I try to think through every decision I make for my city (location, budget, economic impact, environmental impact, etc.) but I felt like that was all irrelevant since you can just move the infrastructures easily which solve half the problems; money rolls in quick which negates the need to choose the economic option, etc. So now, since there's really not much need to stop and think for your economy (except for that first few minutes until you get the first loan), the other factor for the decisions is the aesthetics. Now, I'm not the creative type of person, and this game is leaning towards that type of gameplay, so I naturally get frustrated especially when I don't like the look of the city, even when the economy and traffic is good. Then it's a cycle of restarting a new game. I think what would help a it is if there was a system like in Tropico, where buildings are not instantly built. There could be some type of management on the construction of the infrastructures, even if it were as simple as building time and demolish time. This would at least penalize hasty decisions.
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s true that the economy doesn’t matter much after the early game. I think a lot of the reason things don’t get done as lavishly in real life, though, is that democracies always have pressure to keep taxes low, and dictatorships are usually kleptocrats instead of benevolent. In this game though, we can set our tax rates with very little penalty, and we can keep huge piles of cash around with no penalty at all-and build or not build anything we want, and we usually do it to make things run and look nice instead of embezzling the money or using it to further some self-aggrandizing scheme lol. Anyway, I enjoy the sandbox. I try not to overbuild things, and if I realize I have, I usually scale back. I love making things look real...and believe me, it’s a very painful process to get into that. It does pay off though! The city in the beginning title was one of my first, and it looks a thousand times better with the buildings placed by hand. I’m still not done doing everything I want to do with it either! But I didn’t start doing that overnight...it took forever to find all the assets and figure out how to style neighborhoods to create a sense of place. I do think the economy could be made more interesting. And maybe some of the politics too...like cims getting upset about taxes and a huge yearly city income and bank account. Or maybe cims getting unemployed and the city has to pay to support them until they find work. Maybe someone will develop a mod. I definitely think I’d be interested in that...I really love playing with the Realistic Population & Consumption mod, which makes the economy of space and population a lot more sensible. There are other mods that change up how the economy works too, but I haven’t dug into them yet.

Growing up in a country where you can instantly name any street in your city because they are all unique always turned me off the idea of the grid system. You've single-handedly converted me. Well, for Cities Skylines anyway ;)

I just started watching this series of videos and am trying to get your beginning of the road layout. Being on console ( and not able to download your layout ) is making it difficult to get started putting down roads then deleting them because they aren't in the right place. Do you have any suggestions on where to start building the roads so not to dip into to much money? Thanks.

4:35 Wow, I didn't know that. You learn something new every day. Wait! I have highway connections where an on-ramp meets a highway at a 45° angle and the merging traffic is clearly slower than the traffic going straight. Did you try to say that the speed restriction of going through a 45° curve is faster than the speed of normal roads so that those aren't affected?

Pystro keep in mind that single-lane ramps and other highway roads have different speed limits in the game-ramps are 80kph and regular 2+ lane highways are 100kph. So a ramp entering at a 45 degree angle will still have traffic entering slower than traffic on the mainline, and that’s because of the speed limit difference, not the intersection. If you build two highway sections with 100kph speeds to merge together at 45 degrees then traffic will merge at the same speed. If you merge them at more than 45 degrees then traffic has to slow down for the *turn*. This will happen on any bit of network-not just highways.

I like 39 unit blocks, but I like to split everything into thirds and you get 6 miles per tile.

Great videos! Can you please use some graphic mods, just to make it look more real?

Thank you! But if use mods, though, then I’ll be using mods! I promised the console players! 😉 Don’t worry...I’ll use the graphics mods for the cinematics of the city once we get it grown more! But I’m just going to keep things to DLCs for now.

Excellent tutorial. Just one question: What's a network segment? @ 03:49 You said: "12 units works out really well because it’s the maximum length of a network segment in Cities: Skylines."
@LeeHawkinsPhoto
@LeeHawkinsPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Networks include roads, railroads, pipes, power lines, etc. They are laid out in segments and connected by nodes. The maximum length (in vanilla-there are mods that can change this) is 12 units (or squares/cells/whatever you want to call them).

IS there an advantage to zoning 4x4 squares of residential ie more population for that space than other zoning blocks like 3x3 ?

Honestly, my PC is 5 years old, but it was beefy in its time! Intel Core i7 6700k CPU Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7 motherboard AMD Radeon 390 (I think) display adapter Samsung 500GB M.2 SSD 32GB RAM Asus 4k monitor From what I'm seeing, though, AMD Ryzen is the way to go for CPU...so I'll probably go with that when I upgrade, and get the way faster SSD too.

Awesome! Cities: Skylines does a great job of modeling the real world, despite some necessary simplifications, so if TheoTown does the same, the principles should apply. Thanks for sharing!
