Very encouraging. I bought some calligraphy tools without even thinking it might be such a challenge as a left-hander, but it's something I've wanted to do my whole life so it was a bit disheartening. Thank you for your video. I'm going to try brush pens as it looks like you can do some exciting things with it :).

As I try to teach my left handed self calligraphy I see why they forced people to be right handed back in the ol' pen and ink days. I am more of a "drag my hand straight through my fresh writing" lefty. I have been trying calligraphy with my paper at an angle up until now but your method is much more natural for me. Very helpful, thanks! :)

Glad you found it helpful! I'm also someone who drags my hand over something I just wrote! I had to change a little bit of the way I use brushes and nibs so I get your pain!

I'm what Brian Goulet refers to as a "side-writer," where my hand passes directly over what I write. I've had many teachers try to help me learn to be an under-writer or an over-writer, but neither of those were comfortable for me, so here I am, LOL.

I'm also a side-writer! I've tried to shift the way that I write calligraphy as a lefty and it's different depending on what medium I'm using!

Hi Ryan! I appreciate your honesty but I respectfully disagree! Take a look at some beautiful lefty calligraphers on IG like @logoscalligraphy @jonathanfaust. I don't think it's a matter of lefty vs. righty but rather comparing individual styles.

omg this help a lot. Because im a lefty too. I thought lefty cant do calligraphy. Thats why i always train my right hand but now i can use it. Thank you!

love your video. I've been meaning to create a "how to" vid as well, though mine may have been a bit more critical, yours seems so casual and great and a different perspective. sometimes i forget about free flowing and concentrate so much on perfecting the letters lols. I love how wide your letters are, has that bubbly fun feeling to them, mine are usually squished closer. the hugest thing we left handers will forever never get is the use of our forearm as a pivoting point where we can make flourishes in one long sweep. 99% of our control comes from purely our fingers and our hands, which i see you too have practiced well =).

You know, smudging is almost impossible for us lefties when writing Arabic, Hebrew, or anything right to left. Give it a try. It's awesome fun 😄👍🏼.

I'm a lefty underwriter myself. From watching your video, it appears to me that you are more of a side writer. Do you think so? Have you tried working as an underwriter? I know I used to be a side writer when i was younger and often got the smudged hand. But somewhere along the way I transitioned into an underwriter.

I am a side-writer when I do brush lettering and an underwriter when I do pointed pen (and a side-writer when I write normally). Eek, it can be frustrating :(

So I read online that „broad tips“ are by design for right handed people but I‘ve been practicing with them a little now and I can‘t understand why? Does anybody have a reason why broad tips work better for right handed people?

Great 1st time video! I am a lefty and I write with my paper on a (left) slant with the top left corner facing my left hand! Does that make sense? I know, weird! I'm not a back hand writer either. So to write straight up would be like learning how to write all over again. Is there any way I can continue to learn calligraphy with the technique I'm used to writing? Please......help!!

I’m a left handed violinist! They make left handed violins, but I use a right handed one because they are more readily available and I don’t have to get special made shoulder rests or chinrests. With a normal violin you bow with your right hand and finger with your left, and being left handed has actually been advantageous in some areas as I have more strength and dexterity which allows for more efficient fingering. Just wanted to put it out there, being a lefty shouldnt stop you from doing anything!

Looking good, but I tend to get my ink all over because I'm pushing the nib up on the paper, and it catches on the grain, making it spatter.

+Erin Wall Hi Erin you may need to try using a different type of paper that can handle the upstroke of nibs (I like to use Muji paper because the smoothness and quality of the paper keeps the nib from snagging). You may also need to adjust the amount of pressure that you're applying to your upstrokes, they should be generally be pretty light. Hope that helps!

I don't know why I hate the modern calligraphy script... It looks decent, but I still hate it. Maybe because it isn't as formal, or doesn't require much control, finesse, and work... Don't get me wrong, it's not your writing that I hate, it's the script
