We got "Mr Gimmick" in Scandinavia because our import company "Bergsala" saw the potential in the game and fought for it! We love them for that!

Joe, the reason the Yu Yu Hakusho games weren't released here was because those games were made at least 5 years before the manga and anime began localization here. During the localization run, two games of the series were released here: a crappy GBA game, and a mediocre game for the PS2. Believe me when I say that its an anime that got a lot of fans from my generation into anime, during their late middle-school early high-school years. It's far more popular than "just some anime", the whole series was released on blu-ray here.

I don't know how much Joe is into anime, but Yu Yu Hakusho is great. Joe, if you like anime, and fighting, you really should check it out. It played on adult swim back when they first started their anime Saturdays. It's just over 100 episodes if I'm remembering correctly. Definite similarities to DBZ, but it still has its own identity. And a lot shorter if that's important to you.

I realize this is really old but, the "spine card" is actually called an OBI, they put them on books, DVDs, LPs, CDs, and most other media in Japan. Their purpose is to display information such as track listing, price, translations, and other basic info. For example, in Japan someone might be buying a Metallica CD, and the OBI would have the band's name and all the songs written in Japanese, plus the price. This is also helpful if an album doesn't have any info at all on it, such as Led Zeppelin's "Houses of the Holy"

The way I see it is that if every game from the early 90s was released in the North America and not left in Japan, we wouldn’t discover these incredible games. I think it’s a blessing in disguise. That’s a way to look at things I guess.

We talked about one of the Cho Anikis in the WTF episode. We prefer using real systems when we can, but obviously we need to use emulation for our arcade episodes so I wouldn't say "hate". But we really do like showing the game running on the real hardware to showcase how it actually looked and sounded. Most emulation isn't perfect even if it seems like it is.

The new Splatterhouse is a solid beat em up. Some parts can be repetitive and the game doesn't really offer anything new to the genre, but it's still fun and gives you a good challenge as well.

Tom Kalinske wasn't Sega of America's CEO after Saturn came out. He resigned shortly after that. The real blame for so many 2D games and RPGs never coming over to the west is on Bernard Stolar. His "brilliant" strategy for Saturn was literally "No RPGs and no 2D games". He's the infamous "Saturn is not our future" guy.

Kirbys Dream Land was the most popular game for a long time in Sweden, both kids and parents loved it. I think that's the reason Mr. Gimmick and another "cute" platformer(With a lightblue kirby/gimmick character, don't remember it's title but it was for the Gameboy Color) was only released in Scandinavia because we loved that style and genre.

Good old days when I finished Shadow Over Mystara using Cleric with only one coin... Tip: you can pick money by sliding into it (236+jump). I love the Yu Yu Hakusho game, is one of my favorites, but not for it's regular fights, but because it can handle matches up at for 4 players at the same time, in 2v2 all v all and 3v1. And that's is probably why is so damn fun to play and also the reason why you need a button to block, because you may have an enemy on each side, so holding back woudn't be a good idea.

The Yu Yu Hakusho game had up to 4 player free-for-all fights (CPU optional), which is what the 2-layer stages are for, and you could also set it for teams, like 2v2 or even 3v1, complete with team-colored palette swaps. It has a block button and some weird setups for special moves, like down down, or down up, or down down forward, or just A+B, but it's made so you don't ever need to push back, so you can WALK back, having more freedom in the stage. It's kinda like Smash Bros before Smash Bros

Shadow over Mystara: Right after the fall of Deimos, it turns out he was controlled by another force. The four adventurers, and two more, go set out to stop her and her plans of reviving a virtually-invincible demon known as "The Fiend". Also, both games are coming to PC, Wii-U, PS3, and 360 under the collection name "Chronicles of Mystara" June 18. Will be great for those of us that couldn't afford the Saturn import (and keeps the four player mode).

The D&D collection on Saturn is fine for collectors, but for someone who just wants to play the games, I'd more highly recommend Dungeons & Dragons: Chronicles of Mystara on Wii U eShop, xbla, and psn. It has both games in completely arcade-perfect form (as long as you turn off the HD option), four-player support, and zero load-time. At $14.99, It's a lot less expensive than importing a Japan-only Saturn game for sure.

As an American now living in Japan, I come across great Japanese exclusives all the time. You might consider playing a series of games for the Super Famicom called Go Go Ackman, 3 action platformers based on a manga/anime series by Akira Toriyama(Dragonball,Dragon Quest), they look good and play very good. Really enjoying this series of vids.

Also, I think it was the first fighting game ever to have supers. In this, to use them you gotta have enough meter left and low enough health, which is why the Japanese letters by them start to flash, to tell you that it's ready, so if both are flashing you can do it. By the way, you can also find translations for the menus in gamefaqs, if you don't know enough Japanese to get through the menus alive.

Button Mashing probably got it's start from Capcom of all people. There are several of their older games that had no move lists what-so-ever (Street Fighter III and MvC2 come to mind as I own them), so basically you have to resort to button mashing and try to memorize things as you pull them off. It's one of my big pet peeves about fighting games as not having a move list makes it far more difficult to actually learn how to play a character than it needs to be.

I reckon that's because they are more accessible to people who are unable to read Japanese. A shooter usually is very short on, or completely devoid of text. Easy to understand the objectives of. And can be beaten in a couple of hours. That makes them easy to pick up and play, even if you can't understand the language.
