For me it's orange. It's just not a color I am drawn to and other than using it with rainbow colors or with pink/red and yellow, I find it hard to be creative when picking out a color palette

@hawkpaul8735 metalics will always be thinner because of the type of pigment. Mixing your metalics a bit thicker than the rest of your paints will keep that color separation. If metalics are too thin, they make a shiny haze over the other colors. If you're going for that, great! If you'd rather more disinclined, make the silver a bit thicker! Like if all your paints have a 2 count trace, make the silver a 3 count trace!

David, I am a true beginner. I have never done acrylic pouring before but once. I really don't know what I'm doing. What pour is a good one for a total beginner like me? I wanted to try a Dutch pour, but someone said it was a harder pour to try with the hairdryer. What are your thoughts? Thanks!

I wish this video had been around when I first started. I watched loads of videos but nobody was as helpful as you are. A phrase I heard a lot was 'make your paint the consistency of warm honey'. As I'd never seen warm honey it meant nothing. Your mound upon a mound etc was much more logical to hear. Thanks for everything you've done David. I'm sure this video will help people new to the hobby.

However, when I show to people what I already painted they love them. So, that encourage me to learn more and do it right. Thanks again.

Just a friendly tip, if you put the paint (the thickest) into the cup first then the glue (the second thickest) , mix them, then add the water (the thinnest) into that a little at a time you'll have an easier time emulsifying them.

I’m a “traditional” artist. I’ve worked in oils and acrylics for years - ever since poor health sabotaged my IT career. Mostly landscapes with a foray relatively recently into abstract work. My daughter asked me a few weeks ago if I could do a large painting for her & her partner’s bedroom. She wants something either “ocean swirls” or “space/galaxy”. I’d watched pouring videos a few years ago and tried a few little pieces but didn’t really have the space to set something up to handle the mess. My husband told me a couple of weeks ago that I should have said something and promptly created a space for me in the utility room with a plastic lined wooden tray he built from scrap wood. I’ve been watching you and a few other artists and every few days trying a different technique on small 9x12 canvases. Thank you for explaining the reasons behind various things, like why you layer colours in specific ways etc. I”ll keep practicing and keep watching for more inspiration and knowledge.

what is good about him is that he is not so wasteful, he avoids that by measuring every liquid he uses. Thats wonderful. Now am going to pour painting..i never appreciate others lecturing bec they do a lot of waste..Painters need to protect their environment too..

I highly recommend your videos to any student young or old . You cover many if not all of the possible frustrating problems a student might encounter which in turn encourages the student to keep trying. I plan to watch all your videos on every technique first- saving time, tears and money. Simply amazing.

Thanks a bunch. One of the reasons I'm interested in pours but haven't started is because every video leaves out important information, or uses terms pourers understand, but I don't. I've been trying to hit a lot of beginner videos so I can fill in some of those gaps. Then I found yours. Very helpful!

OH, the WHY! That's the exact reason I had so much trouble with Algebra. It's also the same reason that trauma/ER nursing is the easiest thing I've ever done. I also need to know why so that I understand what outcome is expected ... so that when I mess up, I can correct logically. You'd think I would be good at mechanics and coding and whatever, but alas, it makes me cry. I've been doing art all my life and it's completely intuitive. I can "feel" when the color is right, or the composition is correct, because I have to trust my open eyes. I have Aphantasia, which means I can't imagine holding an apple in my hand if my life depended on it. I need everything explained in detail so that I can make a mental map "in the dark" if you will, rather like a blind person finding their way around their house. Once I know, I know, and I know what's not right by ... "feel"? Weird combination, yes? I can also see round, square, level, plumb, and mirror without the aid of tools. I'm a woodworker, so I still check, but usually don't have to. I can fold a box in my head, but only with my eyes open. Close my eyes, and I can't imagine what it should be. Everything is a uniform black. Even weirder. This is a great video for those who want to know everything to get started! Thank you so much for taking the time to break it down. I teach a pouring class because I've been doing it for decades (but cells are relatively new to me). There are some that want all of the information and some that are okay with just diving in. Matter of fact, I'm teaching a traveling pour this weekend, so I'll be sure to add some of the highlights. I appreciate your breakdown because it helped me to understand what those who are nervous about doing the simplest pour may require in explanation to help them to feel comfortable. You're always a huge help, so thank you for all that you do!

I have paintings I created 30 years ago with cheap craft paint. They are as bright as the day I painted them! So when I started painting again recently, I still had those old pants and they were perfectly fine for learning how to pour paint. I read somewhere acrylic paints only are good for like four years. Mine have been stored in a climate controlled environment. Non of them were moldy (smell bad) or dry. Only the reds were too chunky to use (unless texture is desired) Wow

That is interesting. it is my blues that seem to go bad the fastest. Get all gelly and clumpy. As long as the paintings aren't subjected to direct or a ton of indirect sunlight that really inhibits the fading effect. I did a test a while back on that.

This is why I absolutely LOVE your videos. I'm a former developer and now I'm a systems requirements analyst. I 'feel' art through requirements. Requirements are art. Acrylic painting is such a perfect venue for the combo of art and analytics. All art is based on analytics and experience just like software dev. All artists know their medium. You are a true open source artist.
