You're doing cells all wrong! How to get cells with silicone

One questions I get a lot from my viewers is how to get cells with silicone. Acrylic pour cells are one of the most recognizable effects seen on Instagram, Pinterest and other social media.
One of easiest way to get cells in your acrylic pour is by using silicone. Silicone is a very lightweight substance the floats in most acrylic paints and as it rises to the surface it catches and surfaces the different color paints it comes in contact with.
The three most important part of getting cells with silicone are (1) paint consistency, (2) heat application, and (3) the amount of silicone used.
In this video I show multiple examples of acrylic pours with cells and do a demonstration of how to get cell with silicone in an acrylic pour.

Don't feel that a painting without cells is a failure or a waste of paint, think of it as a base layer for another attempt at a pour or even as a background for an acrylic painting, a landscape or a floral, or abstract, etc. I have repainted over many canvases that did not come out as I had hoped but then became good paintings because I repurposed them

Thanks Matt. Cells are so finicky that we need as much help as we can to get them to come out right as is evident by the smallish ones I got on this painting because I didn't take in to account how hot my studio was.

Your detailed descriptions of process are so valuable. I've been pouring for a year and despite following recipes obsessively and using a gram scale, fail to produce my envisioned effects. You cover not only process but some science, and pitfalls too. Great learning tool. Perhaps using the same type of discussion on pearl cells and bloom and effects of different paint densities would be appreciated by those who still stumble( eg. me!). Kudos!

I was going to agree with others, but decided to make this more prominent. You do a fantastic job in explaining WHY to do things! I really appreciate that! You explain what will happen if you do x, y, or z. As an engineer, I love how you experiment and break down what you’ve learned!!! I have watched hundreds of videos over the last three months, and I have enjoyed them, but I have learned MORE from your videos than anyone else’s videos. Your videos about how the thickness of paint affects the final outcome…how the amount of paint per layer affects the outcome…the opacity of the paint and how to layer them so the translucent paint is not muddied…the amount of paint to use by area…and this video on how to get the cells you want using silicone….I could go on and on! I have to admit, I am still trying to learn the blowdryer technique! I have watched your video a few times, and it has really helped me understand what angles will do what to the paint!!! My issue there is STILL viscosity! But I will get there. 🙃 You are a natural born teacher, my friend! I am SO glad KZfaq directed me to your channel!!! I sincerely thank you!!!

Cells are tricky but if you follow the steps they aren't as hard as most people say.

😀 I wish the end result painting came out with a bit bigger cells but I think seeing what thick paint causes is just as useful.

Thank you so much for making this video. I finally had a go at my first acrylic pour and I had patches of plain canvas and for the life of me I didn’t know why. I thought there’s no way anyone would tell me why that happened. Well who would of thought - I went to one of my favourite acrylic pour teacher and you went and told me why that happened. You are truly amazing, you even explained the difference between a heat gun and torch. Thank you again.
