I realize this video is a year old, however it's worth noting one very important reason of why these Legacy loudspeakers sound and image so well is the crossover matching performed by hand by the owner/designer before the product leaves the facility to be shipped. Of course the swept volume of the drive units enables it to create realistically dynamic playback of the recorded event ... at low distortion. But when that clean highly sensitive high dB output is combined with driver/crossover matching, ... the imaging and soundstaging capabilities elevate to another level. The Focus SE is an absolute giant killer ... punching way above it's price point.

The Legacy Audio Focus SE is my favorite speaker! I used to own a pair of the first version of them. Big, full, clean, clear sound even at loud volumes. Solid strong bass. I placed mine close to the corners and the bass wasn't muddy. I cranked up my Modwright KWI 200 integrated and the bass was incredible! My body shook. The walls shook. It was absolutely wonderful! The best speakers I have ever owned.

Wow. Listening on my Sennheiser HD650 with Chord Mojo , these speakers are absolutely thunderous and still retain all the upper detail at the same time. I was not expecting that. Just WOW!

I own a 90s Legacy Focus. They truly come to live playing at higher volume. One thing previous owner suggested me is go bi-amp. So i did and it makes a difference, Holly Shit they sound so good.

I listened to the focus XD last year during a show and it blew me away....but the speaker was so dynamic and detailed that it gave me listening fatigue after a while. Will need to audition the Focus SE in a showroom next. Thks for the review/sound demo

If you got listening fatigue I would question the source and the amplifier. I switched out an overly bright amplifier and I've been in heaven for years.

I bought a pair of Leg. Focus speakers in 1999 w/rosewood finish for around $6K. They weigh about 175 lbs each & put out about 300 Watts w/sensitivity of around 96. If my vol. knob begins at 6 o’clock These speakers are so sensitive that if I turn the vol. just up to 7 o’clock they are loud. My amp puts out 300watts & I don’t need that much. I’d owned a pair of Yamaha NS 1000 monitors prior to the Focus & loved them. But wanted more. After a time listened to the Focus once , fell in love & ordered a pair. Was a lot of $ for me 20 yrs. ago $ wifey thought I was crazy. Got the speakers after a time, hooked em up, sat 6’ away from them w/a friend of mine and started playing them. Louder & louder & louder. After a while I could feel the speakers push air right at me. They made my hair stand up. That sounded soooooo good. They made me cry. I’m 5’6 & thay’re almost as tall as me. The kids are so good, bass deep & powerful, everything about these speakers Is fantastic. Beautiful to look at w/the covers off. Had them 20 yrs. now. Never never regretted buying them. Never. Sometimes you gotta extend yourself. I did & never regretted it.are there better speakers ? Probably . But in the end it’s all subjective. These are wonderful speakers. Clean, clear, powerful, beautiful, and will last you a lifetime. And, put a Smile on you race every time you look at them and make you want to dance every time you fire them up. Peace out.

Mark Buchiko - I believe that I am somewhat familiar with your Yamaha N1000 speakers. Back in 1975 I auditioned those speakers against the Dahlquist DQ-10s, and I bought the Dahlquist speakers! I had a tough time finding anything better, and I went to a lot of audio trade shows. I finally heard the Legacy Focus in one show, and bought those to replace my loved Dahlquist DQ-10s, which I sold on the used market. I bought my Focus speakers in 1996, and they have been OUTSTANDING, in every way. I had a house with what I called a sound room (25'x25') and could pay them loud after I installed a solid door and put more insulation in the wall that went up to the kitchen, and above that,to the Master Bedroom. But my wife knew I was into music because when we got married I had an integrated amp (Scott 260B), JBL Athena speakers (14" woofer), a turntable (Dual CS-621), and a tuner, all in a one bedroom apartment! Once I switched out my DQ-10s, I converted my sound room into a Home Theater room. I bought a 100" screen, and a Zenith 3-gun projector. I added on to my speakers to initially make a 5.1 system with a HSU sub, and PSB Goldi rear (floor standing) speakers. I had to also add a center channel speaker, and I bought the one from Legacy, which matches the same speakers that are in the mains. This is called the Silver Screen speaker from Legacy. Their newest version of this has rather different speakers in it, which may more closely match the speakers that are now in the Focus SE. It appears that the Focus speakers you have are similar to mine - the original focus which has three 12" woofers (one passive one in the back, which is not there on the new SE model). The efficiency rating of ours is 98dB, and ours goes down to 16Hz. Ours weighs 175 lbs. The new version has an efficiency rating of only 95.4dB.goes down to 18Hz, and weighs only 136lbs. But I bet they sound amazing as well! I bi-amped mine, and have a 220 w/ch amp for the low end, and 270 w/ch for the other input connectors. The volume varies greatly based on the volume the source puts out. I have a CD player, a higher end DVD player, DirecTV, and streaming stick source, as well as analog - a turntable, a reel-reel deck, and a tuner. So, I cannot report when the volume knob sits, but mine is calibrated in dB, where 0dB is supposedly the max, which I have never real used. When I played something really loud (which my wife hates!), it is usually somewhere around -20 to -18dB. Vincent (04-30-2021)

@@Zeck88522 To answer your question Zeck, the Focus SE is a new version of the original Focus. The have less of a lower end, but weigh 41 lbs. less! I own the original model, like Mark describes above. I wonder why the previous owner sold them? Do you like yours? And what are you driving them with (preamp and power amp wise)? What kind of music do you listen to? Do you have then in a home theater type setup or just stereo? Vincent (04-30-2021)

James Caldwell time alignment is not designed into Legacy speakers as it’s really meant to work with their Wavelet crossover alignment/room correction processor. Bill states this in many is the speaker design interviews

First, I have to comment on the question at hand - how does the Legacy Focus compare to the Wilson Audio Specialties Alexia Series 2 loudspeaker? While I have never heard these two side by side or in the same room, I can say that you are comparing a $58K speaker pair to a $10K pair. I have owned the original Legacy Focus speakers, which have different mid drivers (these are Kevlar), with a 12" passive radiator in the back, and about 40lbs heavier for each speaker. But whichever Focus version I have heard (in many, many hi-fi/audio shows), they all sounded terrific. I bring my own CDs and play MY music in the show rooms that allow you to do so, and from this I can tell a lot about the speaker and their setup, and thus compare how they sound with 'my' music. In general, I believe that speakers even double in price do not compare, and you have to go 3-4 times more to get the bass, the clarity, the dynamic capability, and the congruity of the internal speakers. In most audio show rooms at Hi-fi shows, they use very high end, very expensive electronics (pre-amps, amp, DACs, turntables, CD platforms, etc.). These speakers do not need this high end equipment. In addition, Legacy has their own electronics (very expensive power amp), and now this includes the Wavelet. This device is definitely not needed with the Focus speakers, and the Focus speakers existed long before the Wavelet, so they were NOT designed to be used with them. I have never heard any version of the Focus speakers with a Wavelet in any audio room. But I have heard it in the Los Angeles Legacy audio room with the Whisper speakers. I went for a private listening session about 6-7 years ago. Again I brought my own CDs! The imaging was outstanding! So, if the Wavelet is used with the Focus SE, it might bring the imaging and timing to the same point as I heard with the Legacy Whisper speakers. I addition, I went from a pair of Dahlquist DQ-10s, which excelled in imaging and especially in timing (physically phased array of speaker alignment), to the Legacy Focus speakers, the only speaker I felt that was much better than the DQ-10s. I owned those for 20 years, and now I have had the Focus for 25 years. So, I did not really lose the imaging and timing, as a couple of you here put it. I can only guess that James perhaps only carefully listened to the Focus just once, and perhaps they were out of phase (although that's not likely since they should be taking a lot of care when setting up in a show room). Everyone I have bought into my home to hear music (or even a movie since my room is a home theater now and has been shorting after I bought the Legacy Focus speakers), has been amazed, astounded. They excel in almost everything: clarity, full sound, bass, dynamics, and volume when needed or desired. The current Focus SE have an efficiency rating of 95 dB, and mine (the original Focus) are 98 dB. I drive mine in a bi-amped mode with an amp of 220 RMS w/ch with 1,000 damping factor for the bass, and 270 RMS w/ch to the mids/highs (there are only 2 sets of inputs on the back of each speaker). Both of these amps have a max distortion of .03% (or less) over the entire frequency range at the fully rated power, so they product the clean sound the speakers deserve and deliver!
