Just a guess,but because most of the series aired during the analog era,before digital was even a thing,the current writers wanted a Land of Light with more color. And it wouldn't surprise me if they maybe were inspired by Superman's Krypton planet-a green crystal world.

What a great tribute! I really enjoyed it. The parallel shots of kid Taro and (kinda kid) Zero, and their grown-up selves standing over the Land of Light was superb. Where's the scene at 2:19 from? I've never seen that been Ultra Mother and Taro!
