Something to remember is that you can adjust your bow aim using the gyros in the Wii U Gamepad, the Switch Pro Controller or the right Switch joycon. This is relevant because if you can nail a Lynel in the head with an arrow it'll stun them for quite a while, giving you enough time to mount them, and that's easier with the fine-tuning you can do with the gyro. The Lynel will throw you off after a while, but not before you've mashed the crap out of your attack button and dealt them a good chunk of damage. Additionally, your weapon doesn't take damage during the mounted-mash-fiesta, so you can equip whatever has the highest attack power and go nuts, even if it's on the verge of breaking.

Yes, but I wouldn't play BOTW or TOTK first. I would recommend playing either Skyward Sword or Ocarina of Time first. Because you won't really understand anything in BOTW if not.

@zeearchers720 Well yes the lore/story is specific to those characters, who are already pre-set characters and are always the same. It's always a story about the relationship between Link and Zelda (and Ganon). It HAS to be the Hero as Link, the Princess as Zelda, and the Evil force as Ganon(dorf) or it's not a Zelda game! It'd be like saying "why can't i make Batman a woman?" Well because he's Batman. He already exists. You can make a girl version in another story, but she would be a different character. You always play as Link in a Zelda game, who is a boy. As you said, a girly-looking boy lol but always a boy. The princess is always a female princess and her protector/chosen knight is Link, and they always have a certain cute, blushy love for each other, as well as a deep connection to greater powers. It's a well-loved, tried and true story. It's not really a game about customizing your character's appearance or their story (or wasn't before BOTW) - and although you get to decide some things like what weapons you use the most, you mostly follow a linear story line where you go to a particular place and meet particular people and save them - usually in a pre-set order - because one objective relies on the previous weapon/item from the last objective. So Zelda games are not really "free choice" story line-wise. Hopefully that answers that for you if you're genuinely asking why Link has to be a male character. However, yes, if you want to get non-politically correct, the game comes from a time when including everyone's gender in all 100% equal ways wasn't a concern for the (mostly male) player base back then. It's a "save the damsel in distress" story. And if you've ever played it, you quickly find out that the damsel in distress isn't as helpless as she seems. As the other comment said too: Most female players still love Zelda games. Like, obsessively love them. Always among the most popular games for female players hands down, and they are often in love with Link haha . I don't mean to sound mean, but I have to point out that you said it's "not really about appearance," but u don't want to play as a male character? (hardly a masculine one i might add lol). I understand - to each their own - but if I (or another straight guy) said "i won't play such and such a game cos i don't want to play as a female hero" wouldn't you judge me/us? There's plenty of female lead characters in many games and movies now. I often play female-hero games. Some are great, whilst others (mostly common with modern movies) are clearly just pandering to the feminist/"gender neutral" idea that insists on there being no differences between male and female, and that we HAVE to have females and LGTBQ+ included in everything (no matter if they ever want do that activity, or are even physically capable of it) to show how equal and politically-correct everything is at all times. You don't have to turn everything in the world into "i am woman, i must be the main role in everything no matter what, hear me roar" stories. Nothing wrong with a female as the hero, but there's nothing wrong with the more popular tale of a male being the hero still too. I understand wanting the option of male or female characters, but sometimes the story is already a story and you're just reading/playing/watching it. If everything was full of choice like you say, then there would be no stories with actual characters any more. Every game would be an equality based nonsense-world where everyone is gender-fluid and nobody is stronger or faster or smarter than anyone else. Everyone is gay if u want them to be! Nobody has any opinions/preferences/personalities. But that's not what a fantasy world should be like, nor the real world. Kinda sad that some people are trying to turn the world into that. People have differences, and sometimes the hero is a dude and that's the whole story. But I digress! Not sure if you meant it to that extent, but since you said it seems like it's "not inclusive of the female experience/perspective," it seemed likely. Sorry if you didn't mean it like that. Not sorry if you did 🤪 But yes, to re-summarize the point: It's not a game about "character options." Not story-wise anyway. It's you playing as the hero in this pre-set story, and he (and everyone else) is already a pre-set character. You play out (and discover) his story. I'm sure you're not completely alone in wanting a female option, but I don't think there's a huge demand to make Link a girl. It'd probably be a better idea to make a Zelda game where you could play the whole story line as Zelda (in her various forms) instead!
