August 1978, I was doing preacher curls at World Gym in Santa Monica, and Frank Zane came over and asked "May I work in with you?". (Such a gentleman - Can the reigning Mr Olympia 'work in with me?'... Duh! ). I can hear his distinctive voice in my head 45 years later like it was yesterday "let your biceps do ahhlll the work.". Quite the thrill for this 21year old Okie!

LOL. Frank's nickname was "the chemist" because his expertise and knowledge and use of different chemical compounds. It's been said he used so much T3 that he burned out his thyroid. Not a healthy bodybuilder but more like an ectomorph bodybuilder with good genetics for symmetry, proportions, muscle bellies and flow. You could even say he didn't have the best genetics for bodybuilding because you could argue he wasn't a hyper-responder to anabolic compounds.

Frank is such a bodybuilding icon! I have been following him for years, and he is one of the reasons I have started my fitness journey. I gave my best and trained hard for years, but I was hardly getting any muscle, only to find out that my diet was nowhere near as it should’ve been. I have always eaten ‘just enough’ thinking it would be sufficient. My first real diet plan taught me the lesson. I remember getting it from Next Level Diet, but somehow it helped me gain a few pounds in my first month of using it. Surely it wasn’t all pure muscle, but I was happier than ever. Thanks Frank for everything you did for bodybuilding!!

@@pleasureduma9693 Agreed. I think eating healthy and healthy eating for bodybuilding and muscle gain are not necessarily the same thing. I see what bodybuilders eat, and how often they eat, and it's a different situation from regular healthy eating. I don't want to subject myself to the bodybuilder diet yet I still need more protein than a regular healthy diet to maintain the muscle level I do have or I feel like I'm starving. Changing 100 grams of chicken to 130 grams of chicken at dinner protects me from feeling like I'm starving.

In the interview Frank disclosed he did not use anabolic steroids in his supplementation regimen; that surprised me. At 72 years young, I am still trying to improve on my physique, but all the various training techniques, diets or natural supplements I have tried over the years have not provided more muscle mass or definition. Past injuries have limited my weight and movements, but Frank has inspired me to try lighter weight and focus on the pump. Overtraining and recovery has always been a problem for me, possibly stopping after a good pump is achieved will yield better results for me. Thanks for sharing what worked for you Frank!

What he actually said was that he didn’t rely on it to help him win. I took it mean that he took the minimum amount. No overdosing. I’ve seen it many different places where it seems people are mad that FC would say how much he took and steroids. But I believe it’s because (1) they were legal then but illegal now. (2) he and perhaps other bodybuilders do not want to encourage people to take steroids. He feels responsible

Of all the things Mr.Zane said the thing that I personally found most interesting was ((and he came back to it time and time again)) was how important it was to get actual "fotos" of Your body to be able to know what ACTUALLY look like. And that looking in the mirror will NOT suffice. The reason that I find this interesting is that I've so often experienced "dysmorphia" both negative (people thinking they are to fat or skinny) and ""positive"" people who clearly think their body has "properties" that it doesn't, that I've come to believe that we are all inherently unable to look at ourselves objectively. And that generally speaking our underlying mental state will always "interfere" and influence our perception to such an extent that what we "see"(or more correctly perceive) is more dependent on an "inner image" than what our eyes "physically register". Now I believe that this goes for both "mental properties" and actual "physical ones" (i.e. body image) but here I'm mainly concerned of the physical appearance. And so in order to have any chance of objectively look at our own bodies (when that is what we want) is to do it in such a context that we can ""fool ourselves"" that we are looking at someone else, and this can never be done when "watching" (or more correctly evaluating, critiquing) yourself "live". Ideally I would even go as far as to argue that it's better if You can not even see Your face (or more generally speaking identify Yourself, in contexts where we are not talking about just physical appearance). All in order to to decouple Your "ego" and avoid all the "instinctive mental processes" that "looking at Yourself" unavoidably evokes. At least those are my "longwinded 5c's". Best regards

Great interview with Frank Zane. A lot of excellent information from Frank for bodybuilders as well as those wanting to live a long healthy life. I was fortunate to live near the original Gold's Gym, and that's where I worked out from 1970 until it was sold and turned into a private home in the late 70s. It was an everyday occurrence to see Arnold, Draper, Columbu, Drasin, Robinson, Metzer, and so many others during my morning workout. And, while I didn't see Zane as often as the others (if I remember correctly he was working out in the afternoon after he was done teaching Math at Mark Twain Jr Hi). Frank was not the biggest bodybuilder, but I always thought he looked the best, and still does compared to his contemporaries. Many of the other bodybuilders from that era that are still alive have had serious medical issues. Whether it's from working out to failure, unhealthy lifestyle/diet, abuse of steroids, or something else, I'll take Frank's advice over the others. Thanks again for this excellent interview.

Drawn to him when I first started lifting and wanting to change my body.... little did I know the journey would transform me as a man. Bodybuilding principles, many things he espoused (that inspired me at 16 y.o.) still ring and prove true today. Grateful for his example and influence

I loved this interview and learned so much. I knew Frank Zane in the 1980s and was always impressed by him then -- and am even more impressed now, as he is about to turn 79. Lifting weights for a pump -- for a lifetime -- has helped him to look and feel youthful and pain free. The interviewer does a fabulous job, too, because he asks one good question after another and then lets Frank talk. This so great!

@@breaks3085 yes he did. And we need to understand this that he is a product of his times where most bodybuilders didn't tell that they're on steroids and it's even common today. So take what's good in him and every individual will not have the capacity to stand on expectations of everyone .

Thank you so much Frank Zane! Inspiration to me I so many ways. Not only in respect to your accomplishments, but who you are and what you represent. I met you years ago in Portsmouth, Ohio. I was a competitive body builder and we spoke of your vacuum and that I was able to do as well. You invited me to train with you and regret that I couldn’t financially do at that time. I’m 54 now and reflect on your inner montra, getting me and my body back. Thanks again and sure you know the impact you have made on many individuals! Randy H
