A huge advantage for the Two Ball Putter going last, putting at the same holes. And you putt with it all the time.

I love the 8802. Glad they kept it simple and not a super heavy monstrosity. The point of it is to be a pure feel putter. And when you’re on with it, it feels like an extension of you. Don’t look at the ball, just look at the hole, imagine how it’ll go into the hole, and let your body and club do the rest!

I've got a Ben Crenshaw putter that is basically a 8802 that I've had since 1984. I use it sometimes and if my touch is on, it's great! Most times I use a Mallet

Gamed and 8802 as a kid. Still have a 8802 in black kicking around the club shed alongside a Two ball with Two Thumbs grip. Special Select Del Mar is the current gamer.

Oh Sophie Sophie Sophie...you know the answer is "fun". That's why I still use a persimmon driver, MacGregor blades and an old blade putter. I still manage to play off near scratch and compete in the county champs so it's not that hard, just fun, and it's familiar for those of a "certain" age.

That 8802 looks like a brand new milled version. There’s some great video of Ben Crenshaw running the table with one of those when he won his first Masters.

I'm still in my first year of golf, but since I've watched hundreds of hours of KZfaq, that makes me almost and expert, right? Certainly not. Well, I started this summer with a large extremely high-MOI mallet putter, and I have to say, it was pretty great at first. But a couple weeks ago I picked up a modern (weighty w/high MOI) blade putter. I also made some changes to my putting technique. With these changes, I'm definitely seeing improved results. Since I'm such a beginner, I'm not married to either, and it won't surprise me if I change again.

You said it; sometimes it's just how you feel that day. I own and have used my Wilson 8802 for the past four years, and I love it for its feel. With the right stroke, the feel and roll are better than my Ping counter-balance Sedona mallet and my Ping Anser 2, which I've owned for over 20 years. If you're like me, you might have your putter(s) nearby to work on your stroke while watching TV. By happen chance, I've been stroke-practicing with my Ping Anser for the past few weeks, so I put it in my bag last weekend. I couldn't miss, mostly longer putts. It has more feel than my mallet design (of course) but can undoubtedly deviate like my blade. Is my OCD showing? Like Phil and Tiger, I may be a victim of what I grew up using. The first putter my dad gave me in the early 80s when I started playing, was a MacGregor Tommy Armour IM Iron Master. Yes, it is a blade and a beautiful vintage collector's item. However, it still dominates my mind's eye.

When I seen the bottom of the 8802, I was like: "Whoa, wait, what? Did they revamp this iconic putter again?" because they fairly recently did a sort of collector's release of it then took it off the market. Sure enough it is. But man that is REALLY pricey! I do get the craftsmanship part and all, but it doesn't seem much different than older models you can get for like 20-30 bucks unless it's some rare collectable, lol! In any case, I really like the 8802 as it's such a feel-based putter, yet oddly can be scary at times and it's hard to describe why. Maybe because the appearance REALLY makes you have to trust that you are aiming it accurately. So I'll switch between it and a White Steel 2-ball depending on how I'm playing with either. Thus it's nice to see the comparison to the 2-ball as well because it too is incredibly iconic. Intuitive to line up and the multitude of inserts have all sorts of different sounds depending on what one is looking for. It is interesting just how much mallets have taken over, but it's pretty clear why because their longer backs lead to longer alignments which then leads to stuff more suitable to the eye. That makes a lot of sense to do because when aligning just about anything, you use long things because shorter stuff is harder to visualize. Plus the larger surface area allows for more possibilities. Couldn't' fit two round ball-sized discs on a blade for instance. Overall though it'll still probably come to personal preference. Whichever one aligns best for you is the one to use.

I hit Left Handed, so until I found the lovely sub $200.00 Sub 70 #007 I shot the Anser style putters. Having the Sub 70 increases the challenge for me and I love that about this game. I'm not a scratch golfer by any means but I also mainly shoot the same 4 or 5 courses in my area year to year so the greens have become like old friends, and putting the blade has put more smiles on my face than those old Ansers ever did. I wish manufacturers would make more left handed options but I likely have my last set of clubs now and just look forward to playing them for the next 15 or 20 years.

I have had an old Snake Eyes Viper Tour 8802 style putter for about 25 years. I use it more than I don’t. I love the simplicity, feel and it is unbeatable for lag putting. Sophie is right those 4-6 footers get tough when your confidence is a little off. The new Wilson is nice, but WAY overpriced, I am thinking of ordering a Sub 70 8802 style in Black that is half the cost of the Wilson.

I play the original Two Ball putter that came out in 2002. Tried 3 or 4 other putters but always came back to it. Enough of that nonsense. My Two Ball is in the bag forever! It helps to draw a nice thick black marker line on it to help line it up like I did.

I use a Ping 2021 Fetch putter. I did use its previous incarnation which I loved. I have back injuries and find it hard to bend so the hole in the middle to pick the golf ball up is a God-send. The 2021 putter has a really great alignment line so makes holing the putt that much easier. Golf's hard enough; why make it more so? Great video Sophie.

I learned how to play golf with a MacGregor Nicklaus Murifield 1Iron I bought in a Thrift Shop for $1 in the 1970's. I Wrestled, Played Football, Track, Basketball, and Tennis.....we had a teacher who liked Golf but did not really play well start a Golf Team....I bought the MacGregor club to practice for the month we had to wait for equipment to be found. Snuck on Walnut Lane Public Course in Philadelphia and taught myself how to hit ful shots, chips, work the ball. The course was par 63 with 13 par 3's and very tight so.I had to learn how to hit it straight because as a teen I could not afford a lot of lost balls. I found a 8802 in the same Thrift Shop but it did not have 8802 on it. When I recieved my "set" a mixture of hand me down blades and cavity backs including an old Bobby Jones 8 iron with faux wood shaft, I played with that 8802 and loved it. I became the best putter on the team and later was able to get a set or Wilson Progressive Blades that I llayed after High School. Still had the 8802. Won a lot of putting costests and was best of my friends, could read the greens really well also. Since that time I always carried a 8802 and 1 iron in my bag .....my 2 favorite clubs. I recently found a Scotty Cameron Napa .....which is Scotty's remake of the 8802 just like his Newport is a remake of the Ping. I bought that $700 club for $3.99 at a Thrift Store and it is also a killer. Many guys I play with have Spiders and 2 balls and can't belive how I roll the ball with my Blade......they can't believe I play with Hogan Slot Backs decades old and beat them......Love that Putter.....considering her having to change grips the 8802 outperformed her 2 ball and the deficite was over hits.....she would become a better putter if she used it all the time.

Nice test Sophia. Try again but this time run the test on fast sloping greens, that is where the 8802 comes into its own, so easy to hit off toe to make a twisting putt, whereas with a 2 ball hit through break.

I love the 8802 putters and also the Wilson Augusta unfortunately at the new price I find it a bit hard to justify, but I do have a couple of drivers I could trade in to bring it within the realms of not getting shot by my wife when I come home with one.

I never think of a putter giving me ‘help’ and when my putting stroke and feel are on song, feel I can put with anything. The very BIG however is that my putting stroke only feels that good every now and again. Played with a Vault 2.0 Anser for a few years but when confidence was low it seemed to get worse and worse so switched to an OG7 and what a difference. (Especially inside 3 or 4 feet strangely)

@@locobenno9435 glad you like it, I love the blades myself, the 8802 looked so nice. I was deciding between the 8802 and the BL22. I just got the BL22 and it’s fantastic. I like it more than my TM Spyder putter (mallet). It’s super clean to look at, and. I have the 10g weights and it feels a lot better and with my putting stroke it feels more balanced. I love the hard sound it makes with the golf ball when you don’t get a clean hit, but it’s still fairly forgiving with puts. Hit it off the toe or heel end and it responded well and when you strike it pure, it sounds quieter and when you catch it in the sweet spot it feels so nice in your hands and you can hear a more pronounced “ping”

The exact same thing can be said about irons. Chrome, thin top line, compact little to no offset, lots of feedback blades compared to dull, thick top line, large head, deep cavity, big sole, lots of offset irons that give very little feedback. What "helps" you more might no be so enjoyable to play.

It's not about lining the ball up with the putter, it's lining the putter with the target your aiming for. You could easily put a mark on the top of the blade if that helped, but you have the whole face of the putter to line up with your target and you want a putter that feels good and flows in your hands. Not some awkward looking block mallet. Good putting comes from feel.

Hmmm. At the risk of offending those who think knowing history is old-fashioned, one would think that she would have mentioned that the Wilson 8802 was designed and used by this guy some of us know as "Arnie" in the early 1960s. When he left Wilson in 1963, they removed the “designed by Arnold Palmer" engraving. But again, studying "history?" Nah. These days, ignorance is way, way cooler!! (PS: for most of us, I'll give odds that a blade putter is better with short putts of, say, 8 feet or less. Try it. You'll see.)
