Great Video Mark and the team, I have played a Wilson blade 8813 or 8802 for 33years for me it's the feel I love 😍 the modern day satalite dish putters do nothing for me, I recently tried one way to much going on behind the ball for my liking, I totally agree that distance putting is a very fine art with a blade putter on slow greens it's a struggle nothing a bit of lead tape doesn't cure in the winter. I can always give that new Wilson 8802 a new home if no one wants it.

I am literally flabbergasted! You mean the person holding the putter, that controls the pace, face angle and start line has the most influence rather than the equipment??? Mark you need to start telling this message to people. Equipment makers have been trying to fool us for years! 🙈 😂 😂 😂

I used to think I loved the really soft feel off the putter, but since going to an old solid head Scotty I'm loving that feedback you get. I use Pro V1's so a middled strike still feels soft, but I really like the feedback that comes with the solid head so I instantly know where I've hit the face. Just knowing that and being able to adjust had improved my putting a lot

Hey Mark, love your videos! They are fun to watch and I learn from them. I think the real difference lies within the high handicap range when we can't find a middle or sweet spot strike. For us Ping's TR tech or Evnroll's sweet face is a real game changer since the average first put is miles away.

I struggled with long distance putting whenever I had putters with inserts...painfully short. It was like I couldn’t hit the softer insert hard enough without feeling like I was going to knock it 10 ft by or off the green. Much more consistent with milled face putters.

I have used the same odyssey putter for years with some success. For some strange golfing obsessed reason I tried a new putter in a shop and holed everything, I bought it took it for a round and couldn’t hit anything. My partner asked where my old putter was. I related the-shop story and he laughed loudly, he then explained that the putting greens in the shop are all cambered toward the hole. I traded the new putter the next day

I always hugely struggled with putting, tee to green was decent but would regularly 3 putt. In January I took the plunge and bought a TM spider and even though it never really suited my swing I wanted it and liked it and the feel off the face. Since I have had it I've won 3 medals, dropped 3 shots in my handicap and regularly get compliments on my putting. I don't know whether it made me a better putter but it defo gave me more confidence and instead of panicking I'm gonna miss I'm standing over every putt thinking I'm gonna sink this. Over course I don't but it is huge for me at least feeling I can.

I use a considerably older version of the Wilson 8802 putter. I have a collection of other manufacturers' attempts at the same design. I use them specifically because they are so much harder to putt with, which seems ridiculous, except that because they are so hard to use, my expectations for my own putting lessened considerably. I didn't punish myself mentally for missing 10 footers or whatever, because I could always blame the putter. I shifted my putting goals from from making it to getting it close enough to guarantee the next putt. Once those two ideas came together, I started putting better. Golf is a funny game. It also helps, perhaps, that the putter I use I found at a yardsale for $2.50.

Greetings from Oz Mark, I just bought a Wilson 8802 and the change has been significant to my putting. I put it down to subconsciously needing to commit to the strike because of the minimalism of the putter head. You focus in more, in a strange way. That said, you still need to read the putt and put the correct speed on it. I also remember Norman, Nicklaus and others rolling them in with these. Classics don't get the title without a reason.

8802 is the classic collectible one some years more than others. I played with one for a few years and they do have great feel very good distance control when you get use to what the putter wants from you. I always seemed to like it just a little heal side from center. Yes they are very much like a small blade iron you better be able to hit the tiny sweet spot time after time. I do think it is one of the most beautiful putters of all time. Anyone with a strong arc stroke would like the feel of one I think. Interesting how well you guys putted with it.

I own a Two-Ball/mallet putter and a "hybrid" putter (a combo blade/mallet design), but my old trusty favorite is the original Ping Anser. I've putted with the Anser blade for almost all of my life. If you are a better putter, I think the blade lets you manipulate the way you strike the ball better, coupled with an accurate reading of the green. More feel with a blade, too, as both of you said in this video. (Yet, I'm like Mark at times where I go around in circles, between my Anser and my Two-Ball. It just depends on where I am playing [the type of greens] and how well I am putting, at any given time.)

As for Dan being closer with the Wilson, I also find it much easier to lag longer putts closer with the "blade" style putters. When I use a blade, I sense that I'm "feeling" the ball more to the hole, and when using a "mallet," my stance and stroke seem more "mechanical" than "artsy." Does the higher MOI of the "mallets" help with distance control? I don't think so, although the higher MOI probably helps with maintaining the line of the putt better.

Now I play with a face-balanced putter, but after seeing this video I just might take it from its 'place-of-honor' (wall mounted) and put it back in the bag. Thanks...this video brought back a lot of GOOD memories. BTW - The 8813 had alignment lines on it; the 8802 does not as you noted in the video. ALSO, the original 8813 was NOT chromed.

Great video - you hit all the main points in a very fun & practical way. I have an older 8802 (and a bunch of other putters) and did a bunch of testing and slow motion video vs. high MOI Spyder (the big one). The real difference is total head weight and not MOI in relation to performance. Dan's results are the truth. 8802 works fine on a mishit but feels horrible. Long putts are easier with more head weight for a lot of people. Less feedback vs. more feedback is a consideration. Total weight and toe flow (swing) are important. Notice Tiger's new high MOI putter is not face balanced. It's toe down a bit to flow better.

I’ve just gone from a Blade putter exactly the same as that put different manufacturer, funnily enough my reasons where purely help in terms of MOI. Whilst I was putting extremely well I felt I needed help on the longer stuff runs the fringes/fairway on my home links. I’ve gone for a Scotty futura CB, putting has gone well off, I just can’t get the pace of quick links greens and can’t feel anything through the face, I’m sticking with it as things are improving as I think the long term gains will eventually pay off once I adjust on green from distance.

I recently purchased a PXG navigator H.. I thought it was gonna be the only putter I'd ever use again. After using it for a few rounds I knew it wasn't for me. Everything came up short. I had no feel. The sound off the face was way to soft. It cost some $3oo plus. (Used). Anyways i sent it back .. Funny thing i found some free used clubs on Letgo. In this free bag was an old vintage Matzie velvet touch putter.. cooper head . Origanal grip(very thin) well this putter is now my new favorite. It has great feel. The distance control is great , Long story short . Buttery blades RULE....

As much as I completely agree that often the expectation is that equipment will do more than it actually will, I do think it’s worth baring in mind the weight differences between the two. I had an odyssey tank, loved it but left everything short, I felt because of the weight of it. I’m now playing a standard answer style putter. But I wasn’t surprised to see the heavier putters come up short on the long distance, especially when they were hit after the blade. There must be a degree of acclimatising to the weight of it comparing one to the other.

Hi, Mark. (Here's to "Custom Shop!) 3 weeks ago, late July, I acquired a Scotty Cameron 2018 Newport 2.5 - 34 inches, and then had the Lie Bent 2 Degrees Flatter. This is to replace a Titleist Bullseye "Wide Blade" 34" I bought new, and has been in "my bag", since 1992. I chose the 2.5 because of the Head Shape, but Primarily because of the Neck. (I have never liked the "Look or Setup" of the "Plumber's Neck" Putters.) After a week of Practice and Play with the Scotty I used paint remover to get the BLACK Paint out of the Sightline. (The Black seemed like "a Shout", and now the groove of the Sightline seems more like a "Gentle Reminder". I also added a Red Dot, with a "sharpie pen" over the Sweet Spot, on top of the putter behind the face. I plan to eventually send the putter back to S C to have the Finish changed to Black and have a Red Sight Dot added. And have the Black Grip changed to the Red, used on S C's 2016 line. Great Video, Mr. Palmer used the 8802 during his Competition Career.

I have a WIlson 8813 for fun and it's really easy to lag putt and hit from longer distances. Probably about even with my Spider Tour. But where the Spider Tour shines is putts within 5 feet. The Wilson blade putter just feels really hard to control at that point. It may be my straight back straight through on short putts, and my slight arc on longer putts that explains this.

The 8802 sits in my garage, it's not making it out of there onto course anytime soon for similar reasons you stated Bruh. Would have been interesting to see you both on SAM Putting to see if you adjusted your putting strokes to the different putter designs. And if you did so if it was thought out or just organic, you are after all very accomplished in the entire spectrum of golfers. I owned a Designed by Arnold Palmer 8802. Very rare. I think Wilson made it in 1963. I sold it for $350 back in college (a lot of money back then). Sweet spot is very near the neck. The "Design By" had no alignment lines and a leather grip. Bought a Ping Anser with the money and still have it today. I putted with Scotty Cameron's for years, but struggled this year with starting it on line (always missing left). I just got an Odyssey Jailbreak with the slant neck. Some times you just need something different to look at (and place the old one on Lockey's penalty step).

Best putting tip I ever got was on super fast down hill putts to put the ball on the toe of the 8802. The ball comes off the face like you grazed it with a pillow. When I was putting my best, I made the most putts with that putter. It's similar to playing Mizuno blades. When you are playing/putting well, nothing feels better.

At its heart, the 8802 was Wilson't rip-off of the classic George Low Wizard series of putters ( Low was called "America's Guest" and one of the great gamblers of all time). The Low putters were made by a company called Sportsman, which eventually morphed into Ram, which Tom Watson made famous. The Low putters were used by many luminaries: Nicklaus, Palmer (who also used the Wilson), Littler, Boros...the list goes on. I have an original brass Wizard 600, which is in mint conditiopn and probably worth a bit of money (the brass ones are uncommon), but I'm quite fond of it and it resides in my leather Burton bag (which is 30+ years old) with my refurbished Hogan irons and Wood Bros persimmon woods. There is a simple elegance to the classic clubs that cannot be found in new ones...and, at 85 I still play to a 6 and make about as many putts as I did when I was 40. Go figure.

Interesting point about going round in circles with the putter. I’d almost be tempted to get rid of my last putter when buying a new one if it wasn’t for a fear of waking up with cold sweats in a panic about where I could buy one back when I convince myself that there’s something wrong with the new one. In a perfect world we would just get a proper fitting and commit to the change...

The sought after model of the 8802 are either the ‘Designed by Arnold palmer’ from pre 1963 or ‘The Wilson 8803’ from 1963-67 like Crenshaw’s ‘Little Ben’ You can tell you have the right one as the face was the exact depth of a Lon American nickel. I have one and switch back every now and again and it’s great on fast greens but as you say not the most forgiving.

I rotate with the Scotty M1 and theTM spider. BETTER feel on the M1 = greater proximity to hole on mid length putts, especially breaking putts. TM better by far on longer putts and off fringe areas to hole. JMO. I have good days and bad days with both on an equal basis. Agree that scotty soft feel face works well and aids distance control. What works best is more time on practice green getting pace of greens before a round. That makes more difference than which putter.

The promo stuff was to combat the lightening quick greens of the time when you would see balls roll off back the greens from feather light putts. We used to deliberately toe our bladed putts and allow the putter to react to "soften" the putt. As you keep saying it's all about us, we are the over riding attribute to any golf shot we make.

Putters - so much has changed, yet so little has changed since the original Anser and other Ping designs. I've tried loads of different style putters: blades, mallets, mid-mallets, 2-ball, face-balanced, strong toe-hang, short and long, skinny and fatso grips, and everything else. The putter I finally settled on and putt the most consistently with is a 40 year old Ping B60 with the original style Ping grip. Just a great big circular trip that was....

I couldn't agree more --- HOWEVER, you ought to give those new Ping TR putters a try --- they're based on the old models, but they're heavier and have the grooves in the face to help facilitate better distance control. I had a Ping Pal i played with for over 25 years, and and got the Karsten TR Pal to relace it. It's like the same old putter, but better!

Thanks Chris. I do own a couple of Ping Sigma G putter with the TR faces (one is 4 sale, one is now a backup). They are some of the nicest putters I've used, but whether it is because of the somewhat lighter weight and different feel of the old putter, my distance control and results on course are actually still better with the old B60. Kind of a shame because I do really prefer the look of the newer Ping putters to the old.

Bone test put with one then with the other? The second one should be better with a plank?

Recently changed from my Nike Method 001 Blade (as much as I much much prefer the looks of the blade) to spider tour and it reduced my putts per round on avg 8 shots... So much more confident over the ball with it I look past its looks

I have an ER7 and o works 1w both fitted to me. Both produce near identical numbers on sam puttlab and trackman. Whenever I go on the putting green to practice I play 9 holes with each putter and record my score. The er7 is more forgiving and it should be measurably better than the 1w. In over 20 attempts the 1w has won every single time with a margin anywhere between 2 and 5 shots. I love the look and feel of the er7 but looking at the huge mass of putter I always feel like the ball is going to explode of the face and as a consequence I am consistently short with it. Using shotscope I measured a few rounds with each and for putts > 30ft my proximity with the 1w is 1.5ft closer. The 1w is measurably better than the er7 in my hands despite me preferring the er7. I actually find myself practising more with the er7 because I want it to work, but the 1w keeps winning! A higher moi putter definitely makes sense but I cannot reprogram my brain when I look down at the huge lump of metal...

Ive got a Wilson 8802, that exact putter. It came with the grip skew wiff, never got around to putting a different one on. Yep, I bought it because I liked the look of the pictures, it is a lovely feeling putter though. I don't like the spiders, to me, they don't feel comfortable.

definitely comes down to seeing/memories of other people/tour pros making putts. I've been using and spider for a few years now, ever since day won the PGA making massive putts with the spider before it went viral on tour. overall it comes down to the golfer? 🤔 incidents.

Good episode. By the way, Ben Crenshaw said in interview that he used a Wilson 8802 for his Masters victory. His caddy said he never used the sweet spot.

Maybe I'm wrong, but every time I have used a TM putter they seem to be softer and you have to give it a bit more to go the same distance compared to others. I actually kind of like it as it assures some acceleration. That seemed to show up a bit in this test.

Having used the same putter for over 20 years, to me, it’s about confidence as much as feel. Have changed my routine this year which has proved beneficial.

I have a 1960s brass Bullseye putter and a circa 2000 Scotty Cameron steel Bullseye with tungsten heel-toe weights. The old brass Bullseye has much better feel on good hits and feedback on off-center hits. However, there is severe loss of distance on off-center hits, whether high-low or left-right. (The flange on the Wilson putter does a lot to reduce variation from high-low hits, I think. That's why some later brass Bullseyes had a flange.) The Cameron Bullseye does much better on off-center hits but doesn't have the feel on good hits.
