The Dream Car Garage Special Finale! Join Peter and Gary as they revisit the fan favourite Super Muscle Car Shootout, as Peter gives a behind the scenes look and updated opinions. For the previous Muscle Car Shootout episode, click here: • The Complete Story Of ...
The Super Muscle Car Shootout was all about testing the world's fastest, most powerful, and best all-around classic TUNER Muscle Cars. From sheer horsepower to emergency braking, we pushed these cars to their limits. No trailer queens here, just 6 of the baddest muscle cars, 5 tests, 1 winner.
Legendary Motorcar & Dream Car Garage present MUSCLE CAR SHOOTOUT!
Starring:
1969 Dodge Super Bee 440 Six Pack
1969 AMC Hurst SC/Rambler Scrambler
1969 Shelby GT500 427 SCJ Super Cobra Jet
1969 Chevrolet Camaro SS Baldwin Motion
1969 Chevy Nova Yenko
1969 Royal Bobcat Royal Pontiac GTO
1. 1969 Dodge Super Bee 440 Six Pack
A "six-pack" (three two-barrel Holley carburetors) version of Dodge's 440 cu in (7.2 L) engine was added to the offering list mid-year rated at 390 bhp (395 PS; 291 kW) @ 4700 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft (664 N⋅m) @ 3600 rpm of torque. The option code for this was A12, which changed the 5th digit of the VIN to M. These special order 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bees are known as A12 M-code cars. The A12 package also equipped the cars with a Dana 60 axle with a 4:10 gear-ratio, heavy duty automatic transmission or a 4-speed manual, and a 'lift off' flat black scooped hood.
2. 1969 AMC Hurst SC/Rambler Scrambler
Five years after Pontiac invented the muscle car formula by wedging a huge engine into its smallest car, American Motors followed suit in a big way, shoehorning the 390-cubic-inch V-8 from its AMX performance flagship into the company's entry-level car, the Rambler (née Rambler American). The result was the fabled Hurst SC/Rambler.
3. 1969 Shelby GT500 427 SCJ Super Cobra Jet
For 1969, the 428 Super Cobra Jet added Ram Air induction, special pistons, a nodular-iron crank, beefier 427 "Le Mans" connecting rods and an external balancer
4. 1969 Baldwin Motion Chevrolet Camaro SS
Using a factory SS 396 Camaro as the starting point this Camaro was the recipient of many tasty Baldwin Motion upgrade options. This process began with shoehorning a LS-7 454 with correct block casting code of 3963512 under the hood. The LS-7 454 being fitted with desirable Winters Foundry aluminum heads and Winters Foundry dual plane aluminum intake manifold.
5. 1969 Yenko Chevy Nova
In creating the Yenko Nova S/C, Don Yenko and his team in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania were testing the Nova’s limits and the insurance companies’ patience.
6. 1969 Royal Pontiac GTO Bobcat
In the late 1950's Royal Pontiac in Royal Oak, Michigan began offering modifications for new cars enhancing performance. As attention on the small dealer grew with their racing efforts, upgrades and package offerings expanded. Royal Bobcat GTO's would command respect, and with the new tunnel port heads offered directly through Pontiac Motor Division, the word was on the streets.

Royal Bobcat GTO was running strong, by '69 they had their formula down on what exactly to do with that platform. The master mechanic who worked on those at Royal Pontiac also supposedly did the 390 AMC Hurst scramblers head work on those cars too. Seems like I saw an interview with him and he talked about it.

Back in the days of my 1969 Olds 442, if someone told me I would now be driving a stock C8 Corvette that runs 0 to 60 in less than 3 seconds, does 1/4 mile nearly 11 seconds flat, has a top speed over 190 mph, and gets 30 mpg on the interstate, I would say they are full of BS. These sure are the days. Thanks for the video. Sure miss your show and the Speed Channel.

I loved this episode and the other factory muscle car shootout episode. What is very evident is, the owner of the cars from that era needed some mechanical tuning ability to get them to perform up to their potential - which is what makes them so appealing. Much different than muscle cars of today, which are like plug in appliances....

Nostalgia as a word also includes a certain pain (nostos and algos). I truly felt that watching this. I always looked forward to this program - a great combination of fun, funny, skill, and learning each week. Thanks for the memories, and all the work you continue to put out here. ~ Chuck

Being a Pontiac fan and owning 3 of them, yes I am biased here, despite all the cars are truly awesome its nice to see the Poncho show its true colors. For all you Pontiac doubters, the numbers dont lie!

A Phase III Motion car came with an 11.50 guarantee. A 13.41 on street tires is off. The GTO was spot on. The Super Bee was off as well. The Shelby was about right, the Yenko clearly needed sorted out. The Scrambler was off a touch. Those cars were super light and launched nasty with dome stuckier tires. The lack of killer torque out of the hole meant you needed to slightly spin while moving off the line because once moving, they just needed to breath on top.

The GTO was the only car in the group that had control arm rear suspension, effectively a form of four link. All the others had leaf springs.

I think the Pontiac hooked up best because of the factory four link in the rear the others were all leaf.

Ford again was not represented well at all. To even the playing field how about a Holman Moody prepped 427 fairlane, Mustang or how about the famous thunderbolt? Or to throw a 427 soch powered ford drag team sponsered car. Even Chrysler had a badder car than this 440 they chose. How about a hemi dart? Although it's great to see these awsome cars in action to many better prefomance cars such as the 421 super duty tempest are not in the battle.
