A groundbreaking board game of armored warfare on the Eastern Front in World War II.
The game is tactical scale (company/platoon sized units) with geomorphic map boards. The 352 counters were 5/8-inch and very striking for their time.

PanzerBlitz is about to begin!
The game of PanzerBlitz enables you to re-create the drama and furious action of tactical-level armored warfare. Battle-simulations take place on a realistic mapboard which reproduces about twenty square miles of typical Russian terrain. The playing pieces are accurate symbolization of the platoon and company sized units which fought on the Eastern Front in World War II. More than a dozen different “scenarios” are given, each of which allows you to re-create a completely new game-situation in which to exercise your skill as an armor tactician. Prior military knowledge or experience, however, is not needed to play PanzerBlitz-just common sense, clear thinking and a competitive spirit.

Tactical level combat with weapons range and fire-over-distance. Three section “Geo-morphic” mapboard which can be re-arranged to form dozens of different terrain configurations. I started playing this game in 1971 in junior high. It was one of the 1st games outside of chess that i learned to play. About 4 months ago, I got it down from the shelf, after 40 years of not being touched.. good to see that a younger generation is finding this game.. and as you said, you are new at this... by the way.. You can't move stacks of tanks or vehicles along the road to get that lovely faster movement to end in the most desired firing possition or unloading spot. Yet that super fast deployment with all those stacked vehicles at the starting point, at the entry area and moving them all together... say each german tank has 5 tanks in it.. 3 units of them stacked, so 15 tanks driving down a road.. that is around 15meters of separation between them... or you can think of it this way... you have 15 crazed women drivers all going to starbucks before work.. not all of them are going to get to that drive thru speaker at one time.. they are going to be lined up... in combat formation... :) Enjoy the game.. i am going to follow you thru you senario's as you play them.. Panzerblitz was a great starting point for new gamers and vet's...

If I remember correctly, trucks do not leave wrecks, only armored vehicles, including halftracks.

The boys are back! This is one of my favorite scenarios. It takes a little more thinking, and can play out about a million different ways. It can easily turn into the Great Pedestrian Turkey Shoot if the Soviets are not careful. Glad to see you all post this! Thanks! CAT attacks have to target the entire defending stack, and it looked like most of the CAT attacks were handled like selective attacks. There might've been another one where an HT carrying infantry was eliminated but the infantry was left behind, contrary to para F of the transport rules. Anyway, not trying to nitpick, just want to help this PzB series get better and better, which it's doing anyway. As y'all say in the video, you're definitely playing in the spirit of the game and, most importantly, doing the PzB community a service by sharing your journey with the game. Can't wait for S3!

Thank you for pointing that out! We do appreciate it. There were a couple of CATs that we definitely messed up, and I'd have to check to see if that infantry was loaded or unloaded at the moment of destruction. But either way, we're getting the hang of it. We'll get it right next time :)

Nicely played on both sides. 👏👏 I enjoy the commentary and format of your vids. Having played with line of site both ways, using a straight edge definitely changes things and I think that variety would be my reason for using it in the future. The original (least advantageous) method seems more in keeping with the scale and scope of platoon/company mobile engagement. Straight edge sighting seems more appropriate to use with man-to-man or squad level and simultaneous movement systems (it seems to work well in Squad Leader/ASL).

thank you for playing for panzerblitz! I am glad you mentioned the LOS options. I tried it also recently because I wanted to play with the original rules but I threw out tracing a movement path for LOS almost immediately. I found it burdensome and I never quite understood it anyway. I am guessing it worked like this... This may have been the first game of this type and their original, ground breaking solution to deal with LOS was to calculate LOS with a movement path but they were apparently also experimenting with a straight edge as another school of thought. However, if you think of this as kind of a Beta vs. VHS battle tracing a movement path quickly died and the standard for future games was the straight edge. All games I can think of this type today use a straight edge but there may be early SPI games I am not familiar with (maybe made by the person who made Panzerblitz) that might have tried to use the movement path system for LOS

I prefer the straight edge because it makes the mapboard immediately more intricate and interesting, though there are "edge cases" that crop up...

I use the LOS tool built into VASSAL. Not only does it give me a line of sight, it also gives me the range! Thank you for sharing!

Yes, that is an advantage that Vassal has over Tabletop Simulator!

This is a great game! Because of your inspiration, I am playing the entire PB/PL/AIW Series of games, a turn a day! I am looking forward to seeing the difference between your play throughs and strategy commentary and mine. One thing that I noticed so far, it seems that the Germans are a little more difficult to play. What do you think?

One interesting thing, “The Wargamers Guide to PanzeBlitz” says that the Germans are hard pressed to prevent a Russian Decisive victory, let alone win. The Germans are significantly underpowered in this scenario.

Yes, although that makes the scenario intriguing - to see if the Germans can hang on and not suffer a decisive loss...

a german win is impossible. if the soviets completely ignore the germans and run forward (as they often did in reality), they are certain to get a level 2 win. the germans need to kill 20 soviet units to match that, and the soviets have only 13 vulnerable units. a soviet decisive victory should be in the bag, reduced by a german marginal victory.

overall, well done ! the german player understood that all he had available was psychology. the soviet player pretended to play along, but had his eye on the actual victory condition all the time.

wow... is that video 100% real time? I didn't know if you just played straight through you could play 10 turns in 49 minutes (even if they maybe cut 10 short and conceded)

Oh no, we edited this down for length - we don't want people to wait around while we look up rules, think about our moves, etc. It doesn't make for good TV (or KZfaq, for that matter!). In general, if we can, we will edit out all the fluff from our playthroughs so you can simply enjoy the gameplay in a reasonable time frame..

17:00 that entire discussion misses the point. the soviets don't NEED to kill anything. their big advantage in this scenario is the HUGE defense factors (and unit type) on their infantry companies. this is a major advantage in all PB scenarios, but is critical here. if you feel like it, stick the guns in some covered terrain LOW DOWN, NOT on hilltops. NEVER put guns on hilltops. use the trucks to ship infantry forward. the soviet victory condition is based on ONE unit (which could even be an empty truck). (yes, the game designers are aware of this. it's a feature, not a bug)

overall, the soviets can easily get a major victory just by ignoring the germans and running (as they often did in reality). the germans can get a marginal victory if they fight well, but hardly any more. but consider this: just stick a guard on a truck, run it 24 hexes down the map, and start running through the jungle (and crank some CCR for good measure). to stop that unit, the germans will need their entire force. now stick ANOTHER infantry unit on a truck on the other side of the board and repeat. so the soviets get a decisive win, using only 4 units. also, the soviets move LAST, so what's going to stop the soviet vehicles on the last turn ? you see the problem ?
