#panzerblitz
@avalonhill
A groundbreaking board game of armored warfare on the Eastern Front in World War II.
The game is tactical scale (company/platoon sized units) with geomorphic map boards. The 352 counters were 5/8-inch and very striking for their time.
250 meters per hex, 6 minutes per turn.
Avalon Hill Complexity Rating: 6
[From the box back]
...from the other side of the ridge comes the clanking thunder and the ominous dust-cloud that heralds the arrival of an onrushing wave of deadly steel: German armored columns on the attack.
...Russian tank commander's slam shut the hatches of their dreaded T-34's...gun crews prime their weapons and infantrymen hug the earth...
...and there-topping the rise!...a glint of dawn reflecting off the muzzle of the first German tanks...
PanzerBlitz is about to begin!
The game of PanzerBlitz enables you to re-create the drama and furious action of tactical-level armored warfare. Battle-simulations take place on a realistic mapboard which reproduces about twenty square miles of typical Russian terrain. The playing pieces are accurate symbolization of the platoon and company sized units which fought on the Eastern Front in World War II. More than a dozen different “scenarios” are given, each of which allows you to re-create a completely new game-situation in which to exercise your skill as an armor tactician. Prior military knowledge or experience, however, is not needed to play PanzerBlitz-just common sense, clear thinking and a competitive spirit.
IN EACH PANZERBLITZ GAME, YOU GET...
- 352 authentic unit counters
- Big 22”x24” mapboard in full color
- Comprehensive illustrated Rules-of-Play
- Game Situation Cards
-Campaign Analysis Booklet
...PLUS SPECIAL FEATURES THAT MAKE PANZERBLITZ A NEW DEPARTURE IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE-SIMULATION GAMES!
Tactical level combat with weapons range and fire-over-distance. Three section “Geo-morphic” mapboard which can be re-arranged to form dozens of different terrain configurations. Platoon and company sized units which can be combined to form many distinctly different battle formations. Situation cards which allow the playing of several dissimilar games using the same basic rules. Easy-to-handle oversized unit counters with authentic armored vehicle recognition silhouettes. Rules which include such considerations as: Range; Elevation; Obstacles to Fire; Fortifications; Close Infantry Assault Tactics; Weapons Interrelationships, Motor transport; Mines; Anti-Tank Guns; Mortars; Spotting; Indirect Fire...and much more!
“Panzerblitz” is a German word which literally means “armored-lightning.”

Dude, you're blowing my mind! Just as soon as I got a new copy of the game after 20+ years of absence, your PB series starts! I can't wait to see this. Good luck to the Soviet player of S1 - he's gonna need it! EDIT: don't forget to leave a Wreck counter when you kill a tank or vehicle. Wrecks count for stacking and can really change gameplay as they gather. Y'all picked a very tough scenario for the Soviet player to win if the Axis player is even moderately skilled at set-up. It was fun to watch y'all play. Thanks again!

14:30 to 14:55 is why this game was fundamentally broken when it came out. No opportunity fire rule. Units can move in plain sight with total impunity from enemy guns. Everyone I know retro-fits rules from Panzer Leader and Arab-Israeli Wars to make PanzerBlitz more playable.

Yes, we were thinking about doing just that for the playthrough. There was an interesting article that came out in the General when the Panzerbush accusations started where they defended the original design, and they made some good points, but I think we might implement opportunity fire going forward in these playthroughs

Really, really enjoyed the video. As y'all noted in the video, it was a little "dirty" in terms of applying the rules, but that didn't detract from the enjoyment! It reminded me of playing PzB "again for the first time" about a year and a half ago with an old friend and PzB comrade from college, using first TTS and then Vassal. Great gameplay video of the first scenario guys! It's one of my favorites. I noticed that the Russian took a few "liberties" with the stacking and road movement rules on entry though. :) This is really critical to this scenario IMO as it involves that player trying to sort out the road jam issues associated with an attack from the south. Awesome to watch and do keep it up with the following scenarios. A link to my mod would be appreciated to advertise TTS and the wargame modding community there a bit (if possible).
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that. If the units move one by one, and you start with the higher movement factor units first, is there a substantial difference? For example, the units would move along the road, and there will be a couple instances at the very end of the unit's range when they may not be able to use the road movement to stack... I guess I'd have to play it out to see. I think we have fixed our gameplay for scenario 2, which we are doing now. I'm happy to link the mod in the description. How do you do that?

I haven't played Panzer Blitz in decades, but I believe there is a mention in the rule book that says the ENTIRE hill on this board is orange hilltop squares; it isn't meant to be one flat mesa--which is a rare topographical feature in western Russia.. If that is true, long range fire is impossible on the mountain, and one can only attack a unit directly next to them.

@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
Yes, you are right. I think that's why the author said that the cavalry were more valuable than the infantry, unless you are playing with the Panzer blitz rule in the infantry can hop off the tanks and close assault right afterwards. The fort is located exactly three hexes away. "At least 3 hexes away" means you can use the 4th hex away, therefore the fort should be 4 hexes or more away. So the favorable placement of the fort in the woods is not allowed.
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
I see what you're saying, but I got the placement of the fortification and setup overall from Avalon Hill itself, from the Wargamers Guide to Panzerblitz (1990). I read "at least three hexes away" to mean "a minimum of three hexes away", in which case the placement is fine. But I understand your interpretation, and I see how it might be ambiguous.

If I am on high ground I can see the enemy coming up. Granted you can only depress certain weapons only so far but cant understand why the germans had to wait till the russians were on top of them . Thanks. New to panzer blitz but not war gaming and avalon hill games.
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
In this case, think of the top of Hill 132 as a plateau, and the Germans are set back a ways, meaning they can't see what is just over the lip of the hill. If any German units were at the edge of the hilltop, they certainly would be able to see and fire at the Russian units. And they would be exposed to fire from those Russians as well. From a technical perspective, the line of sight is being traced through to red hexides, which means the line of sight is blocked. Panzerblitz doesn't have opportunity fire either, so units can drive around at will without being shot at, it just matters where they settle. This opportunity fire rule was implemented for Panzer Leader, and many people play with it in Panzerblitz.

the middle option: clear out the woods north of bednost to get safe firing positions for the tanks. then swarm the middle fort. otherwise: there are hexes on the big hill that the 88s can't shoot at: V8,9 as well as a couple that only one 88 can see. the pure southern approach looks bad for the soviets. note that losing only one tank, the soviets expect to lose, as they can't realistically hurt the forts anymore.
@victorfinberg8595
@victorfinberg8595 10 ай бұрын
with this setup, the northern approach may be better. on turn 2, the soviet tanks start shooting at the fort (2-1, expecting D), as well as CATting (-2, looking for a DD). the germans can't shoot back. then rush the lone Sec in the N forest on the big hill. that's 6 VP. now flood the suburbs of Bednost, aiming to pick off two weak units for the win. on the face of it, this looks like a 50-50

10:10 here's what should have happened on german first fire. a) 2xSec pick off one wagon b) 1x20mm pick off one wagon c) 88 on ONE tank -> dead d) shuffle the SMGs and ENGs around to get 2x 2/1 -2 CATs (guaranteed D, 50% X) this leaves 1x88, 1x20/4, 1x50mmAT, 1x20mm unfired. good options are a 4/1 on one more cav, or a 3/1 on one more tank ... and basically, the soviets can resign. eg. next turn, only the forts are spotted. one tank against a fort in the woods is 1/2 +1 and keep in mind, the soviets HAVE to kill at least one CP to win. Finally, victory conditions are based entirely on german casualties. by misreading the rules, 3 german units (or a couple more ?) died. this gives the germans a decisive (or major ?) victory. and incidentally, yes, you guys made a bunch of mistakes, administrative and tactical, but still did way better than a bunch of other people posting about this scenario.
