Geez I miss this show so much. I used to get up an hour early when I was in High School back in the day to watch it because it would be shown at around 6am usually. WE NEED SPEEDVISION BACK

Yes, the Triumph GT6 was beat up in the press over reliability but my GT6 is still on the road. Bought new in 1972 it was my daily driver for many years and I have over 150, 000 miles on it. The car never let me down, the key to longevity is maintenance. Great car, still gets attention today!!

Awesome, I have 2 Ford Smax's and one of them has just covered 200000 miles, original engine, turbo, clutch, DMF, injectors and it still handles like a well sorted hatchback. I thought it would be rubbish because it's a Ford, but it now has 17 service stamps so maybe it's more about servicing than the badge on the front

I owned a GT6 that I bought from the second owner when it had 219k on it. To be fair it had gone thru' several diffs and gearboxes, twice as much torque thru' Spitfire-sized powertrains did't add up for longevity.

Ah yes ... I had a 69 GT6 MK2 (IRS) ... looked fast even when parked ... when your "back side" is about 6 inches above the road, 120 feels really fast. The 2 liter inline six was "one of the smoothest engines ever built".

Good thing for a Triumph to look fast even when parked, as that's how they spent most of their time.

As a child in the early and mid-1960s, I watched races on Saturdays filmed at Goodwood, Silverstone, and other British tracks (some that sadly closed) as well as Riverside Raceway (got to see a few races there as an adult before it was turned into a housing tract - what a waste!), Watkins Glen and others (some that no longer exist - sad). As they were always filmed, they came here to TV weeks or months after the actual races, but I didn't care. They were still races! Cars! Racing! I loved watching the smaller cars like the Spitfire, the Minis, the MGs, the smallest of Fiats (Cinquecentos?), the Renault 4CVs, Ford Cortinas, and TRs. I was always sure that I was big enough or that they were small enough (especially NB the Renault 4cv and Cinquecentos) for me to drive ... at age 10 ;-) LOL! My Saturday mornings were filled cartoons for 3 or more hours followed by racing, followed by the Wide World of Sports, and to hell with breakfast or lunch! I was a skinny kid. No time for that. Bugs bunny, car racing and in season, ski racing and bobsleds (bobsleighs for you Brits)! It's great to see these races here on KZfaq. Brings back memories. Thanks so much for posting this!

Legends of Motorsport and Victory by Design! My two favorites of the older, “serious” shows (as opposed to Top Gears’ not so serious, albeit entertaining, approach).

If they got a Triumph to finish Le Mans, I'm guessing the first thing they did was put the Lucas bits in the garbage and install Bosch or Delco Remy electricals.

The fastback "Spitfires" were called GT6. They had inline 1996cc 6 cylinder engines. They did have a difficult time coping with North American conditions and many did become "junk" rather quickly. Now, the survivors are interesting collectibles. David

Not accurate. The Spitfire was a four, sold as a convertible, the GT6 had the 2 litre 6 and was a fastback with rear hatch. They have common origins, but very different cars. The race cars shown in this video are very special cars with much aluminium in the bodywork, an aero GRP bonnet and roof moulded in GRP from a prototype GT6 roof. It was not designed by aerodynamicists, but in fact worked very well.

Too bad the production Spitfires including the GT6 were such collections of junk. The BMC Sprite and MGB were much better built and faster, too.
@rkt739
@rkt739 7 жыл бұрын
Where did you pull those "facts" from? The Spitfire may be slow but the GT6 certainly isn't. MGB: top speed 100 mph, 0-60 in 12.9 seconds GT6: top speed 106 mph, 0-60 in 12.2 seconds

I never drove a Sprite or Spitfire, but I remember an Autocar comparison test of the Midget 1500 and Spitfire 1500. They had the same (Triumph) engine and gearbox. Autocar concluded that the Spit was the better car.

I had a Spitfire Mk4 in the early seventies for nearly three years before getting a TR6 and was never outrun by an MGB in spite of it having a larger engine. The secret was in the carb tuning and I had a mate who was a TVR race mechanic who used to help me set them up. Besides the MGB was another seventies rot box thar rotted from the inside out. MGB, no thanks thats why they are ten a penny. Phil Mac

Highly appreciative, and know it's out of your control, but for Christ's sake dump the super fruity VO commentator (I know you can't). I'm a Brit and almost puke when I hear him. Should have posted this about 50 years ago.

That 'fruity' commentator is Raymond Baxter. What did he know about Spitfires? Well he flew the things - real ones with wings and guns - in the Battle of Britain. Might sound Tally Ho but more of a man than you'd ever be.
