Amphidinium Dinoflagellates, be gone! After a solid two months of effort, dino is no more... until the next imbalance, I am sure. In the meantime, here is a document of what worked for me and what did not, YMMV depending on the type of dino you have going on in your tank. Best wishes to you if you are currently fighting the good fight!

Thumb up pal you did great job. i beat mine by accident but a good accident 😆😆I had caulerpa algae on my live rock only a tiny bit and I had green hair algae then the hair algae spread like wild fire and then the caulerpa algae grew starved out the hair algae and got rid of all my syno algae. I now keep caulerpa algae in my tank all the time thick and no algae at all it's a miracle algae I highly recommend it to any saltwater aquariums. Love your channel. Congrats! I did too. I hooked Seachem Phosphorus and Nitrogen up to an auto-doser until cyanobacteria exploded. It's still exploded however I have setup a algae turf scrubber in my sump and have already harvested a decent amount of turf algae from it. The turf algae in my display has stopped growing and the cyanobacteria is somewhat subsiding. There's no more Dino and no bubble algae currently.

Great video. I’m dealing with this now I think in my 25 gallon after getting through a diatom bloom. My nitrates were at 15 so I did a 25% water change but might need to feed heavy to get ‘em back up. Im also seeing a lot of algae on the glass so I’ll leave that there to help outcompete these Dino’s!

WOW! I think this video just gave me a revelation! I have been batting my brains outs as to why the dinos are no longer on my sand bed and rocks but still all over the walls! I was just about to switch what I am doing and move on to something else. If I understood correctly are you saying that that is the good bacteria or is that the last to go is on the glass? . Its been such a long battle but I do remember at one time the sand was snotty. I had been dosing mb7 and vibrant about every 3 days. The last month or so I increased it to every night alternating each one and added 2 low watt in sump uv sterilizers. Its been a while since I could see the whole sand bed from acclimating 2 batches of corals. Today I turned all white on and sure enough not a speck of red/brown or anything. But the funny thing is I have some dusty stuff covering on my rocks. After watching this it made me think maybe its the dinso that were once on rocks desinagrating and maybe thats why its looking dusty! The up close of the glass on your looks exactly like mine! You are saying you beat it so I guess I have to! YAY! If I keep dosing will the glass keep looking like that? I am a little confused as to why you said you kicked it yet its still on glass so please explain! PLEASE Thanks . I love you and your wife! You guys are so cute together!

Thank you for the video. I have a 240g (48x48x24) tank that has been up and running almost a year. I have been battling dino and cyano for the last 3 to 4 months. Phosphate has been in the range you mentioned, however with my API test, the Nitrates read 0. I understand the API test kits are not the best out there. Anyways, I'm going to give the Ocean Magik from Algae barn a try. I have been dosing the Brightwell bacteria and will continue. Looks like I've been committing the cardinal sin of syphoning and disturbing my sand bed, which I will stop. Thanks again for the video. Ted

Since then though we connected a Icecap turf scrubber so not sure if that is why the dino (AND) algae has not come back but I promise that dino-x with beat anything on the market in it is the 1 single product on the market that i would stand behind 100%.

I recently set up with dry rock.... well I've had about 10 setups since 1998. All my previous setups were with LR. This new setup I had Dino for the first time in my reefing career. Dumped in a bunch of live phyto i'm talking 500ml a day for a week. This did the trick and I'd recommend this approach to anyone. Well done for winning the battle though mate

@simon lockley-evans when is the best time to dose phyto? and should the skimmer be off?
@simonlockley-evans9349
@simonlockley-evans9349 3 жыл бұрын
@@uffnstuff I dosed mine in the morning at lights on. For no particular reason other than that was a convenient time for me. I dont run a protein skimmer due to my tank being focused on sps so I only have 2 fish, if I did have a skimmer I would turn it off until the dino had gone. I'd then keep the tank "dirty" for a while and dose flux RX to deal with the inevitable hair algae outbreak, it may also help to dose some extra bacteria. After the hair algae and any cyno was dead, its at this stage I'd do a significant water change, if I had one I'd turn skimmer back on and reduce water column nutrients back down.

I left previous comment before I watched through. PLease help me! I am really confused now. What was on the glass was a diatom bloom from dosing silicates? All I have is that on my glass and wave maker now. I never id the type but it has evolved from snotty on the sand and covered the rocks and walls. It did seem to go away at night and come back n ot sure. I do know that I was dosing mb7 and vibrant and stirring up the sand bed and blowing off rock and coral. I was dosing each one one alternating nights and added the 2 uv sterilizers. Could it just be a bacterial/diatom bloom now that I am experiencing and its gone especially since my sand is so white? ITs been white for a while now so should I add any of those other things like silicates or phyto. When do you know that its time to quit and their gone? Is that when you only see it on glass because that is all I am experiencing and dusty rocks. I dont know whether to just stop and do a water change and clean it off yet because I dont want a set back! I did a water change about 3 weeks ago and scraped the glass but for last 3 weeks I think the sand and rocks have been clear so I think its time to stop dosing and see what happens but petrified that since I dint add silicates and phyto that I am not ready and it will come back! What would you do if you were me? Please help! Thank God I found this video! This is the best dino video ever! I had no idea that it was probably gone and was fixing to try another method or Id it and go from there!

Got news, your dinos are still there. What we end up doing with our tanks is get to a point of biological balance. There is all sorts of organisms in your tank, dinos, cyano, various algaes, bacteria, Ich etc. all I can guarantee you are there. But you have reached that point of balance. Great job. Always a fun view. Your tanks and videos are always great, entertaining though not always very accurate. You are rationalizing things out and coming up with theories snd developing opinions that are likely not biologically accurate.
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 3 жыл бұрын
There is no argument from me here, I agree with you that dino is always in the system (I mean the coral zooxanthellae is dinoflagellates), they are just waiting for the next time things go out of whack and the less welcomed sort of dino would rear it's head again. My apology if it is the semantic that is causing the confusion, for example, if I say "dino is gone!"... sometime I do simplify things too much as you can see. 😅 For treatments and their backings, I have a few links to the video description that goes more in-depth in terms of the different science or experience. In terms of my own experience and speculation, I try my best to preface those and deliver them as my own experience; if there are certain points that are blatantly wrong, I totally welcome constructive criticisms, that's how I learn and be a better hobbyist! 👍

You do a great job. But best to explain things as your opinion or thought processes and that it isn’t necessarily proven scientific fact (unless you have the references for the claims). Nothing wrong with offering opinion, but this is how myths and all sorts of claims that have no validity get started. You are meticulous, intelligent and think through things and apply a careful process all the time. Just sometimes it is nothing more than conjecture or opinion. We all do that! Keep up the good work.

I wonder why your coralline algea was growing good when tank was new/clean and stopped all of a sudden now....with the higher bio load I’ve always been told if you have coralline your ready for sps and if your coralline is stopping are you sure your on the right path? Can your tank keep sps alive now? 🤔 Try a Walt Disney in there and lets see how it does! 🤗

The mistake i made with my system i can only blame myself for. I tried to culture Bioluminescent Dinos,(Pyrocystis sp.). For the most part i was successful and cultured them up to a 5 gal tank. I idea was to introduce them to my reef system in hopes that they would live and display at night when the lights went out. Well they survived one night then i never saw them display again. However, I did get an issue with the dino outbreak. and yes, my no3 and po4 bottomed out SO, i do not know if the bloom was them OR preexisting dinos. I bought the $20 microscope but, that did not work to well. Then i bough a more expensive one that has an LCD display vs the eyepiece and i'm still on the fence about that one and i'm having trouble with the focus. I removed all the frags i had to a QT system as they are stressed right out and probably will not make it. This specie of dino is not killing my snails, goes into the water column at night and when i catch them in a 10 micron filter sock, the smell they give off sure smells super bad. In fact, i made the mistake of giving it a close smell at the sock opening and found myself sneezing uncontrollably for about 5 minutes. One thing i tried was Dino x and used as directed it made them go away for a short time then they came back,(epic fail). It DID however, kill off ALL pods and the soft tube little feathers worms...COMPLETELY. Since, i did x7 30 gal water changes over the following week as it is a 500 gal system and used AC as well to get that help get that Dino X out of my system. Right after, it was lights out for 10 days as i read that after 10 days the dinos basically self destruct. The system is BB so, no worries there. Have a 70 gal sump with Chaeto in it that i had removed because i also tried Vibrant which was also only a temp fix. Now Chaeto is back in and i just turned on the lights just for it. During this blackout, i was feeding the system Live Phyto AND introduced Amphipods as well as copepods from different venders like Algebarn and RUSALTY. Amphipods are doing well and i have yet to check on the copepods BUT, shout out to Algebarn and RUSALTY, they are pretty serious about the life they sell and customer support is great. I also, bought the before and after tests form Aquabiomics. They well analyze your water samples to see what type of microbes and other critters are in your system and give recommendations based off that. As i can see in the main system. ATM, there is NO trace of the dinos. Not even the smell they gave off. Po4 is .0766 ppm down from .137 the day before, and No3 is 5ppm. I use a Hanna UL Phosphorus checker,(i don't mind the math). To make sure it was calibrated i used the solution sold for that and up to date reagents. I have to say, the statement that they are in every system i dunno if is true. I've been reef keeping for decades and until now, i've NEVER once, had an issue with dinos. Not even when i began the hobby and used uncured LR right off the plane. First time for everything. Thanks Inappropriate Reefer, your you tube contributions and very helpful.

The statement that dinos are in all tanks is true. There are thousands of species and you just never had an outbreak of a nuisance form of it i'd imagine. He didn't mean that all tanks have nasty dinos waiting to explode necessarily.

You are not going to find scientific papers on this kind of stuff, scientist have better things to do with their time. He mostly consulted with Daniel and others on reef2reef. This is a hobby, what you are going to learn is via some other hobbyist experience. That is how I defeated my type of dino previously.

If low nitrates and phosphates is the cause of the problem why didn't you dose Seachem Nitrate and Phosphate instead of dosing so many other stuff?
@InappropriateReefer
@InappropriateReefer 3 жыл бұрын
Here was my thinking: Low Nitrate specifically was the cause, but on top of bringing Nitrate up, I still want to encourage the good algae growth otherwise It'd just be dino taking advantage of the raised nutrient levels. That was why I dosed bacteria, phyto, Silica (specifically for diatom) to encourage competition.

Hydrogen peroxide can easily crash your tank if you go overboard. Be super careful with it. I speak from experience. Sometimes it’s better just to live with the dinos for a few months and let things balance out over time by themselves.
