Agreed but I thought he'd have some funny little drawing or something behind the viewer camera so I tried to turn the camera around, or maybe a changing joke behind you. Sort of like the VR360 RVB video that has the focus be Griff and Simmons talking, but looking behind saw Blue team sneaking in and stealing the flag before taunting the two and hopping off the base.

When I watched the original, I felt like I understood why something as simple as a different aspect ratio and smaller screen size can ruin a movie. But I didn't truly understand until this video released, and I compared it to the original. It's just... off. I always feel like the screen is too close, the movie theater ended up slightly distorted, and (as you said) Imax just isn't impressive viewed in 2D.

Even though I haven't watched the VR video in VR, just in a moderately big TV PC monitor (watching from 40-ish cm away, so it takes up most of my central vision), I definitely agree. Everything is zoomed in, so it feels too close even though it's just bigger than it was originally, very optical illusion-esque.

No. In VR showing a 2D image is just as pointless as sitting on a meeting watching a power point on a projector. And we are not talking a nice office or anything. But a old projector pointing at a wall interfering with wall clocks and whatever else. And no AC and air is stagnant so you get a headache + unconformable seating. For a power point that is booring, pointless and as good to watch at home without having to start up a car find parking and pay for all of that... Just to watch a power point. 16:9 and 4:3 is the only screen standards. Black bars is only allowed to bridge the gap. And possibly if a movie or whatever creator know wtf they are doing and not just being a ass about refusing to use the tools available to make stuff as good as possible. 16:9, VR, 4:3. Simple as.

It's awesome that you made it 2D, but the fact that it lacks the "Cope Seethe Mald" poster makes it clear that the intended way to enjoy it at it's fullest is by VR. The irony of this video needing to be made in 2D so many people could watch is a magnificent way to showcase your point!

10:50 The "zoomed out" home video release thing is actually a result of overscanning. Many movies were shot on 4-perforation 35mm film (Academy 1.375:1), however, the SMPTE "flat" standard aspect ratio (1.85:1) is wider. Film was distributed on 4-perf 35mm film just like it was shot on, so in order to crop it down, you used an aperture plate, which just blocks the top and bottom of the image in the projector. If you're out of frame (showing too much of the top or bottom, or in home video's case, overscanned) you are showing things that the director didn't want you to see (boom mics, sethands, etc).

Dealing with variable aspect ratios in games can be a headache, too. If it's even supported. Many older games, like the first two Max Payne games, don't support anything other than 4:3 and will get stretched if you run them at 1920*1080 on a modern widescreen display. If it _is_ supported, it's often badly programmed by fixing the horizontal or vertical component of the camera's field of view and adjusting the other to match. If they fix the horizontal, then going wider cuts out your vertical view. If they fix the vertical, then going to a portrait orientation cuts your horizontal view. The correct way to do it is to take the minimum of the two, match that to the FOV slider, and expand the other. This may have gotten better with the advent of smartphones which can rotate the display at a moment's notice, but there's bound to be lots of lazy programmers who've never done anything for mobile platforms, so I remain cautiously pessimistic.

Some interesting notes from film history: On the Waterfront is a film made in 1954. Its a grest one. It was also shot to protect three aspect ratios: academy ratio (1.33:1), widescreen (1.85:1), and the middle ground 1.66:1, the widest image older square screen theaters could project. A lot of films from this era were shot this way so they could be sold to the largest number of theaters, and the director had no preference for any specific ratio. Criterion Collection released a whole set where the main feature on disc 1 is the middle ratio and the second disc has the film in both full frame and widescreen. TWO YEARS EARLIER This is Cinerama released. And at release it only was shown in roadshow settings. This thing was not only taller (6 perfs high vs 4 perfs of literally every other film) but also used three reels of synced film side-by-side (along with a fourth for surround sound and a fifth with a “breakdown reel” of extra scenes for when this delicate system inevitabley broke and something went out of sync) for the first popular ultra widescreen experience. And for the Blu-ray releases of Cinerama films they invented “Smileboxing” to curve the image along the flat screens to simulate the giant Cinerama screens. So you can only see it sorta like it was intended at home if you have a curved TV or monitor, cause there’s only two or three Cinerama theaters left in the whole world.

11:18 Apparently, CAPS animated most of the 80's and early 90's Disney movies in native 1.6:1 to accommodate both theater and home release crop. Was the Blu-Ray release trying to emulate that??? I honestly don't know; as you said, the decision makes no sense.
@chrisfratz

But Robbin Hood was way before CAPS was even used. The last movie Disney made before switching to CAPS was The Little Mermaid. So that still makes no sense.

@@chrisfratz Yeah, it was a bit of a stab in the dark. But it's literally the only thing I could think of, because the decision is legitimately freaking awful. Shot composition is one of an animator's best tools, and this kind of archiving utterly fucking breaks it.

It’s interesting how much people worry about “the fear of missing out” Missing out on watching movies the “intended” way or playing games the “intended” way. At some point, does it matter at all? We can’t experience everything, and no environment can fit in this elusive concept of artistic intent. The more you whittle it down, things are just not going to line up with this imaginary scenario. Isn’t it more important the experience you walk away with, rather than focusing on what you missed out on?

Very impressed how well this turned out, and how quickly you did it! I hadn't considered that you have full control of the 3d camera. At least, I thought it would take a lot of effort to recompose each shot, but it seems to have worked out quite well without needing to move any geometry (that I could notice). This just goes to further reinforce the ideas of preservation and tailor made accommodation discussed in the video too! I do appreciate the editor notes though, to make it clear that this is a compromise, not the best way to experience it. Seriously, cannot praise the VR version enough!

When watching the original, I REALLY understood the point about how VR can alter a movie's screen to fit whatever aspect ratio the movie director wanted. When rewatching it in 2D (either downloading the original or this version) I absolutely get the part where "It has to be widely adopted" for it to work.

I said that watching your vids are like an experience that's an understatement. It's crazy that this version was created within discussing the topic of releases not going with the direction and choices of the creator and it really highlights it. You took an experience and you made it into a video. A regular old video that takes the magic of an experience and kinda tosses it in the trash can. Further amplifying and strengthening your point. A meta joke that just makes you even more correct. You, my boy, are the smartest dummy I have ever did done lain my droopy little eyes on.

Interesting thing I've done with Samurai Jack eheh. It occasionally likes to be WIIIIDE with black bars on the top and bottom. The Bluray has black bars on the side, then I got an amazing idea... 4:3 content will stay 4:3+black bars=16:9 ratio, then crop around as much black as possible while also keeping the content with the remaining letterboxes to retain that same 16:9 ratio. I did this for several big episodes and I'm liking the semi widescreen experience. Granted I had to downscale (or upscale) everything down (or up) to a single resolution to mux all the segments back together using VirtualDub2 because cropping removes pixels.
@pikgears
@pikgears Ай бұрын
Corrections: 16:9 is an invention of the digital age. People who saw Robin Hood in theaters originally would have saw it in 1.66:1 most likely, but there was leeway in either direction (1.85 and 1.33 being the most common by far). Some theaters would still have had 4:3 screens and shown it that way. In fact if you were to look at print of a sound movie from this era, the picture would actually be about 1.2:1 because the sound part takes up some of what used to be picture, so even in 4:3 it's cropped slightly. These movies were never meant to be seen in this full 1.2:1 height, and it was not uncommon for boom mics or other unwanted parts of the set to be at the extremes of the frame that would have been cropped out, even for home video releases. Seinfeld wasn't "upscaled" to 4k, it was shot on film and rescanned in the 4k (or so) resolution it always existed in. Digital IMAX is usually 1.89:1
