Ice Planet 2002 is officially back in LEGO Minifigures 71046 Series 26 Space, so here’s the full lowdown on the frosty subtheme from yesteryear.
The next LEGO CMF is just around the corner, with 71046 Series 26 Space due to arrive online and in stores from May 1. The new blind box collection includes a selection of 12 unique characters, with multiple nods to classic LEGO Space sub-themes, sets and minifigures of the past.
One familiar returning face is the Ice Planet Explorer, complete with trans-orange chainsaw - such eye-catching elements being prevalent throughout all of Ice Planet 2002’s models, albeit then in the slightly-different trans-neon orange, a colour that’s now retired. Confusingly, the LEGO Space subtheme was launched back in the early ’90s (when 2002 seemed like the far flung future) and initially co-existed alongside the likes of Blacktron II and Space Police II.

This minifigure is what I'm talking about. Perfect reimagining of the original, goes well with the original and aside the sad trans neon orange color not being produced anymore works great alongside the older ones. Love it!

I read somewhere the designers said their headcannon is that the old orange was what the chainsaws looks like when they're running/turned on, and the orange this figure came with is what it looks like turned off. He said it was funny to imagine how unsafe it was back in the original theme when they walked around with running chainsaws everywhere they went

I loved the ice planet set!! I was subscribed to the Lego Magazine back when it was first announced and I just remember thinking it was the first new Lego Space series in what felt like ages, and it had an awesome white, blue, and orange color theme!!! And those translucent orange chainsaw pieces!!! I had two or three of the smaller ones back then, not sure if i still have them around or not...

I was luckily enough able to get one from my local Walmart, I got the ice planet figure and robot butler and it’s very cool

The numer 2002 in the name of Ice Planet states for the planet number, Cristo2002, where the Ice Planet guys are present.

I really appreciate these history / context vids - thank you. 2002 was smack bang in my dark ages so it’s good to have the background information for the various Space Series minifigs!

oh I remember them yummy marshmallow looking white wheels, set 6814 was the one I had, I was around 5 years old while playing with my space sets. amazing video, brings back first lego memories.

would've been neat if the helmet was dual molded, and the visor with antenna could've been the new reddish orange color they introduced for this year to pay homage to the trans-neon orange visors they used to have.

The unnamed guy with the white hair was actually named in Lego Racers 1 (although only in development materials) as 'Will Chill'. Commander Cold (a name also appearing for the first time in Lego Racers) was previously known as 'Commander Bear' in several EU catalogues. Finally there is this rumor (dating back to a late '90s forum post from someone claiming to have worked as a Lego designer) that Doctor Kelvin's original name was 'Major Ur(u)sa', referring to both the star constellation and the Commander Bear name.

I achually thinking if you have plains to do the alien beetlzord form this CMF wave sense it is reference galaxy squad (the most ‘recent’ Lego space theme form 2013)? Probably not sense it’s not as old as the other 3 but as the fan of the theme think it be neat
