The repetition matters depending on the flow of the build. Ofcourse the flow of a build is propably a personal taste. My best example of good flow from two recent sets is the space shuttle discovery and the pirate of the baracude. Example of worse flow would be the blacksmith, the millenium falcon or the harry potter chess set. I havent dived into why some builds just "build better." It probably has to do with the ease of recognising what pieces should go where. If you have to build something that has allot of the same pieces with slightly different collours or all pieces are the same collour, you are paying more attention to the single pieces then you are paying attention to the object you are building. So i cannot speak for the AT-AT, or as the millennials call it:"the AT-AT", i can give you some insight as to why sometimes repetition isnt fun. Ofcourse you know whenever you build starwars its gonna be 95% grey. Hence why i dont do it anymore after the falcon.

Yeah the ATT is not great as well for mainly the same reasons. very high price, repetitive build for the legs. But still all the artistic lego stuff (this set included) are waaaaaay more repetitive (the world, the earth, all the mosaics, the collosium , all the stadiums, ...) it is basically the same thing over and over again. I like the end look but I would never spend that kind of money on them. There are far better sets out there with a better display, play values and much better build experience.

I went to bed after completing bag 7 or 8 last night. I’m finding the build surprisingly more enjoyable than I expected. I had to buy this set for the building experience, given its uniqueness, but wasn’t sure if it’d be tedious or not. I’m very happy to say that so far, it definitely is not. As far as your point that, for the price, you can buy a premium globe- that can be said about most, or many Lego sets. I can buy a detailed diecast toy car instead of a Speed Champions set, but then I wouldn’t experience the enjoyment of building it myself. I already own a nice earth toned globe for educational and reference purposes. This isn’t meant to be for that: it’s a rendering, inexact by the nature of the materials used in its design.

Don't forget about 3D puzzles too. You can get a much larger, and geographically accurate one of those with stand for 1/3rd this price. That's not to take anything away from your enjoyment of the LEGO set or your good feelings about its value! I just choose to take into consideration what a consumer can get for their money vs. LEGO when I talk about value in my critical reviews.

@@JANGsLEGOreviews Fair point. Always look forward to your reviews Jang! Before I consider buying sets, especially retired ones, I always search the set number for your review first. @@JANGsLEGOreviews Well, sometimes ;) It's the same with every display-set and exactly like augsdoggs said: You can get more detailed models for less money. So should you by those models "unless you have already everything else"? I guess that's impossible to answer if you are not into that particular theme. Has a "normal" and cheaper model of car, dragon, helmet, ... more value? Not if you want something brick-build ;-) So, as you said, PPP is fine but everything else up to the individual customer (except there are flaws in the model of course).

you can buy plastic model kits that have over 400 parts and require you to paint and detail them yourself and they only cost £40-100 (even the star wars kits are that price only lego seems to have the disney/star wars tax) Lego is by far one of the most expensive forms of model building
@DJ.KyloRen
@DJ.KyloRen 2 жыл бұрын
The point still stands not all objects lend themselves to be valuable products in Lego form. Vehicles, structures, animals, etc. make for good products because they're essentially toys that are buildable. Display models have the benefit of the Lego building experience and the end result being displayable and accurate to what it's supposed to represent (which is a major factor in judging the value of.) The globe however might have the Lego building experience (though even that is debatable) but at the end of the day, doesn't provide the primary and essential purpose of a globe.

Good point about map distortion. Dave Barry used to joke about how so many maps show Hawaii and Alaska in boxes right off the coast of California, he didn't know where they really were for years. Also, we need to build a high-speed train to New Zealand, because that long flight is horrible 😉😃

I wouldn't say Canada is portrayed smaller than the US here. You have to remember the shape of southern Canada and the maritimes etc is a continuation of the shape of the US. imo the designer put way too much significance on Britain compared to anywhere else. Like they sacrificed France, Iberia, and Italy (one quarter circle tile? There's no reason to separate Tunisia and Italy that far, they're very close) but not Britain.

I bought this the other week and am blown away by it. I understand the criticisms of this (repetitive build, gaps and unrepresentative countries) but I genuinely believe this is one of the best display pieces lego had made. From a display distance these issues are rarely an issue. 9/10 piece for me. As a bonus you can always modify the various landmasses yourself with pieces not too expensive to acquire.

The fact that light can peek through the gaps has not really been addressed elsewhere so I'm glad you went to it in detail. The zoetrope effect comparison makes sense to me. You even provided a good workaround as well. For all the imperfections of the other territories I'm impressed they managed to get Singapore right by using an actual 1x1 round tile. Geographically, it resembles a rhombus that's longer than it is tall, but for the purposes of scale, the dot metaphor has been in use forever. It would've been a bonus for comedy if they had used a red tile instead of a green one.

I think the people who want this in their lives will be happy with it. It's not for me, but I feel no need to criticize it. It looks better/more cohesive from farther away, kind of like an impressionist painting, so if you want it as decoration (and celebration of Lego) in your home, not as a study aid, it should be fine for that (none of that is meant as a criticism of your review, btw - I think you're on point). Have you seen some of the AFOL elaborations of this that Lego has been posting? They're pretty cool and remind me of what some people did with the Adidas shoe set.

I like maps and think a Lego globe is really cool and I sometimes buy a set just to have fun building it if the price to parts ratio is OK. This has OK price to parts ratio, perhaps not the best parts selection but a building experience that while better than the world map still seems pretty boring, so I think I'll pass unless I find it for a very good price. I have a feeling it could be made better with a 1 plate thick on the side construction, but it would never be much better. I agree with Jang: It's a cool idea that doesn't quite work however much I want it to.

I love the idea, I'm a big fan of the work of Disneybrick (the fan designer) 's work, but I really just don't feel like the end product is good enough. Many times with Ideas Lego will completely redesign the fan idea, making it much better in most cases. Here, they used the exact same structure Guillaume used, even making it less refined and detailed. Kinda sad, this could've been one of my favorite ideas sets...

Reasonable argument however I too feel this has been specifically designed/marketed towards people who simply want to build a novelty display piece out of Lego more so than any kind of educational piece. Falls into the same category as I think the typewriter, and guitar which aren't so much functional but highly displayable. Personally I'd just build this to display/spin rather than worry care about the accuracy. Though as a RISK enthusiast I think it would be an fun idea to swap out the colors to match the continents on the board.

I would like to build this for sure, there's a definite coolness factor in building something unusual for Lego but is just like a household object. However, that's also the major problem that's become more and more noticeable the last couple of years and I felt has been sealed with this set as well as other household object based sets like the Fender Stratocaster set. Like you said, if you wanted a nice globe showpiece on your desk, you can get significantly fancier looking globes for much less or even smaller ones that may be plain and aren't Lego builds, but more solid and significantly cheaper. The same for the Fender set, because although a Fender Stratocaster is hugely expensive, you can still get a moderately decent electric guitar. I dunno, I felt that ever since building the Playable Piano 18 months ago, sets like these give some rather cold feelings for how very seriously toned they are, probably due to the 18+ tone and branding. Like you said, it's a nice looking Lego build and set for sure, but there's plenty other better valued sets out there for much less than this.

I wonder if the design would have been better served by creating the land masses entirely out of dots, like the flat World Map set. Potentially a way to make it more accurate? I don't know, might not work at this scale. Also I wonder if there is any potential to motorize the spin? Possibly the mass of it is too heavy though.

I’ve been building this the past few days. JUST finished it like 5 minutes ago. Waited to watch this until I finished it. I haven’t watched the whole video yet, but I have mixed feelings on this set. I think it looks pretty good as a display piece, especially from further away when you see it up on a shelf or something. With that said, I really didn’t enjoy the build much at all. It’s very repetitive, and I understand that it has to be, but man it got tedious towards the end. Even the stand was pretty repetitive too. It is built pretty well for what it is and I understand why it has to be so repetitive but it just got old for me. There’s not much I haven’t enjoyed building but if this ever fell off my shelf and broke, it would never get built again by me. I am tempted to hook a couple motors up to this and get some good gear ratios going and see how fast I can get it spinning. 😂 I’d also love to see someone make a flat earth out of this that spins around on the stand like if you put a pizza on it, if that makes sense. 😆 Overall, I do like it, I just didn’t enjoy the build. I don’t care about the “accuracy” of it, I think they did as good as they could with the size of this, and it is a cool display piece. Maybe once I put a couple motors on it I’ll like it even more.

I don't think they could have done better with existing parts, but I was really hoping they would create new plate shapes, like a pentagon and hexagon, something that can tessellate a sphere properly. Imagine an UCS solar system, a more rounded Death Star, and all kinds of domes and hemispheres in other sets that would really benefit from being able to fit pieces closer together on a sphere.

Agree 100 percent! For that money you get a nice faux antique globe with a glass bulb and hand-laminated maps plus a real wooden stand. The type design looks weird to me with it's fake Art Nouveau vs. Medieval handwriting style. A conventional Times-like font would have been better and perhaps the labels should perhaps be tan with black writing and silver nail heads to give the impression of being nailed on after the fact.

It is pricey for what it is. Its appeal for us is as a base to have some easy-modded fun with it, to display as a 'trip memory-souvenir' by marking places we have been and want to go, and maybe do some other fun display things with minifigs. Of course anything beyond small markings will inhibit continual rotation, but that creative aspect of things is gonna make this a fun little shared project for my wife and me. But yeah: $200 spent here isn't nearly as creatively fun nor build-satisfying as a Modular building.

The last five or so minutes of this video was disappointing. I love your videos and appreciate your honest thoughts and reactions. That said, I feel you went off the mark on this one. It isn’t meant to be a high quality globe. It’s LEGO and it’s for people who like looking at LEGO things. And it is okay that it looks like LEGO. LEGO isn’t supposed to look “real.” Some very talented people can design something that looks super “real” out of LEGO, but that shouldn’t be the measure of every set forever and ever amen.

Not at all. I appreciate that you share your opinions. Perhaps “disappointing” was the wrong word, but it’s the one I used, so let me try and qualify it. I was disappointed that the review ended with what I perceived to be an unfair assessment of what it should be- an actual globe- rather than what it is- a LEGO interpretation of a globe. Just me, but I don’t buy LEGO, even expensive LEGO, because it looks like the “real thing.” I WANT it to look like LEGO. “Disappointing,” in a personally-embarrassed sort of way too, that it figures the only time I actually get to chat with Jang is on my only “negative” post. Lol! 🤦‍♂️😅. Since I’m not likely to catch your attention again, let me say that I really like watching videos on your personal creations, your city, and the Cyber Punk district, and I eagerly await anything about the Planetary Defense Force.

I like the idea, but I agree that it’s really not an educational tool. It feels like it exists just because it can, not because it should.

I feel like the set would have done better if it had come out after the world map, the world map is more detailed than this when it comes to overall shape of land

Agreeing with you … I didn‘t buy it but I saw it in the Lego store window. Don‘t even really think its pretty. Honestly … 200 dollars for Lego yes, but not for this

Hello, Jang! I wanted to say I disagree a bit with the review on this one - or, rather, maybe I just disagree with the conclusion. Much of the criticisms are pretty objective and on point, but I really actually LIKE many of the same elements that you criticize. I find the finished model almost confrontationally, uncompromisingly "Lego," and that's a huge part of the fun, for me. I like the crude caricaturing, the abundance of visible studs, the landmasses you have to squint a bit at to see the proper shapes, and even the gaps that let you see through or notice the inner working. From a distance, it almost looks like a low-poly count object in an old 3D game, up close, it's so "Lego" it kind of screams "fun," to me. I think the designer did about the best they could for what this is (though I do agree that there could have been better designs for some of the printed tiles - which was probably the artist assigned to it, not the designer's fault) and love giving it a spin from time to time. I have it sitting in the "classy" corner in my gaming room along with the ship in a bottle set and antique jewelry drawer/music box that belonged to my grandmother, and it's quickly become a joy to have there. I really like that there are somewhat "adult" themed sets that are almost bewilderingly realistic - I have so much positivity for the botanical line - but I'm really happy with how bricky this one is, too.
