A complete walkthrough of the North American (NTSC-U/C) PlayStation version of LEGO Rock Raiders, a 1999 mining-themed action-strategy game based on the LEGO theme of the same name. This walkthrough covers all 18 one-player levels and all 6 two-player levels.
European (PAL) PlayStation version: • LEGO Rock Raiders (199...
Windows PC version: • LEGO Rock Raiders (199...
Gold medals are achieved in all 24 levels.
In total: 175 green energy crystals, 38 red energy crystals, and 25 lost Rock Raiders were collected in one-player mode; and 56 green energy crystals, 12 red energy crystals, and 17 lost Rock Raiders were collected in two-player mode (231 green crystals, 50 red crystals, and 42 Rock Raiders total).
Most of the two player levels were done by immediately teleporting the second player out and completing it with just player one. However, for Crystal Islands I ended up controlling both players. The level is not impossible with one player like Hop To It! was, but it would be tedious.
This version of the game is notably different from the Windows version. It was originally supposed to be a port, but LEGO Media decided that a real-time strategy game would not sell well on PlayStation, and made Data Design Interactive redo the entire game in only six months (hence its low quality). The game was also initially rejected by Sony of America, leading to the North American version having several more months of development, including entirely new levels by Gameworld Seven Ltd.
The files from the PAL version of the game are dated August 1999, while the files from the NTSC version's are dated February 2000.
Emulated using DuckStation. Internal Resolution set to 3x; Aspect Ratio set to PAR 1:1; Crop set to All Borders; True Color Rendering and Geometry/Culling/Texture Correction enabled.
Recorded at 1152x720 resolution (game originally 384x240), 60fps. This video has been upscaled to 1080p to improve the quality due to KZfaq's terrible compression (please KZfaq use higher bitrates for videos).

I wanted to redo my longplays of the Rock Raiders PlayStation games because I wasn't happy with the originals. They were very low-quality, as I didn't really know how to emulate PS1 then, I skipped a bunch of the 2 player levels in the PAL version, and there were some editing errors in the NTSC one. At the time I'd just used BizHawk's mednafen core, as it was the only really accurate emulator I could find besides Mednafen itself, which is very user-unfriendly. But now there's a new emulator called DuckStation which is really great, very much like Dolphin which I love. Not only does it let you upscale the game like ePSXe, but it even lets you fix the affine polygon wiggle that plagued the PS1! I used this as an excuse to just completely redo these games and do them better this time. I know PS1 games don't look that great to begin with, but hopefully these will at least be much sharper looking and won't have so much blur whenever there's lava onscreen. And yes, this version of the game was the one that got delayed. I know that one email from David Upchurch said the opposite, but it's not impossible he got them mixed up. I have both versions of the game, and the files date Aug 1999 for PAL and Feb 2000 for NTSC, as well as the copyright dates on the disc. Plus, a studio called Gameworld Seven is listed in the credits of this version for level design. And finally, the recent DDI hard drive dumps by Obscure Gamers have included some documents talking about Sony America rejecting the game and Stewart Green hiring Gameworld Seven, to make new levels for the US version. All the changes I noticed in this version: - All languages other than English have been removed. - All the levels have been replaced with new ones by Gameworld 7 (which are more boring imo). I know the NTSC game had more development since Sony thought it was too bad to be released, but why did it need new (inferior) levels? Why couldn't they have gotten DDI to make new levels instead of some other studio? - The three bonus levels have been removed; getting all gold medals only gives the player the better ending cutscene. - There are only 6 two-player levels now, all original, instead of 5 original ones and 13 recycled one-player levels. - Ending the game with all gold medals causes all of the cutscenes to play before the outro and credits. - Cutscenes end a little earlier than they should, likely to let the closing black bar animation play at the end. Some cutscenes have a few black frames at their end, so in the PAL version, the black bars would close over an already-black screen for those cutscenes. However this change now leads to some cutscenes ending way too soon. Why didn't they just cut those black frames off? - Music plays during the credits. - All of Chief's text has been rewritten (and has no personality any more, just dryly tells you what to do). - Level loading screens have slide puzzle minigame, rather than repeating the mission objective. - Loading screen graphics have been cleaned up. - All levels now require red crystals for silver and a time limit for gold, rather than a variety of requirements like before (where some levels were timed for all medals or none of them, and different amounts of red crystals would give you different medals). - The player now has an animation for teleporting at the beginning and ending of each level. - Levels mostly now involve the player starting at the left side of the map and travelling to the Teleport Pad on the right side; there are no longer levels where the player starts at the Teleport Pad and has to travel across a more open map, or where the level ends without the Teleport Pad (except for some two-player ones). - Lava-themed levels are now rare for some reason, with only four total in the whole game. - Lava monsters do not appear anywhere. - Pillars appeared in a few levels in the PAL game, but they're much more common now. - Crates appear in some levels. You can push them around and they make awful noises. Why are these here? - Cave-ins occur in some levels. - The camera starts set to "combined", where it is rotational when the player uses a vehicle, rather than starting at "directional" by default. - The camera now zooms in when you drill with a vehicle. - The "effects volume" setting in options uses a new sound effect, rather than the sound of running water the PAL game used for some reason. - Green energy crystals now make the sound red ones used to, and red energy crystals have a new sound. - Sound effects in general feel louder. - Radar booster packs no longer exist, and the radar now shows all entities from the start, instead of Docs being the only character who could naturally use the radar fully. - Ammo and health packs now respawn, making Sparks's double-pickup and Docs's health regeneration abilities pointless. Dynamite also respawns. - Dynamite no longer runs on a timer, the player must press the use tool button again to set it off. - Large vehicles can roll over spiders and scorpions (the best change).

@@Garth_Brown yeah I really don't see how this version is supposed to be the improved one. it has some quality improvements but the level design and gameplay have been made much easier and more dull imo. but sony america demanded it for some reason... despite how much trash they did allow

Man this takes me back, for those who are curious: no you can't skip the opening cutscene, was a horrible reality because when your parents said you could only play video games for 30 minutes firing up the Trinitron & PS 1 took 3 minutes then another 5 minutes just to enter this game. Didn't play it much just because of that, did complete 5 or 6 missions though.
@Ringtail

you can skip the opening cutscene, I don't remember if it's start or x but all cutscenes are skippable besides maybe the lego logo. 30 minutes is too short tho especially with this game's loading times.

The manic miners team should remake this version and call it Manic miners adventure or something and also include an online mode that plays up to 4 players.

I think people have suggested that to baraklava but for now he's just focusing on remaking and fixing the main pc game. I think he is planning on adding ps1 creatures to it at the very least, so it may be possible to recreate ps1-style levels through heavy scripting.

The video quality is really great! Did the game have 16:9 support? So the PSX version was a pure "action" game with no RTS elements? I can't believe that there are different versions of this release like you wrote in the pinned comment! Which PSX version do you recommend?
@Ringtail
@Ringtail Жыл бұрын
I don't know if a real PlayStation or any later PS consoles could output it in 16:9, it's been a while since I've tried it on one but I think it crops or squishes. But this is how the game natively outputs; it's the only PS1 game I've seen like this, probably because Data Design Interactive did something weird, but hey I'm not complaining. As for the quality, you can thank the developer(s?) of DuckStation for that, it makes these games look really great. Yeah, it was apparently supposed to be a port of the PC game with a few more puzzle elements, but only 6 months before it was due Lego Media decided they wanted it completely changed. They apparently did this a lot, one of the Lego Racers 2 devs once famously said something like the management there changed every 6 months and always wanted changes that only made the games worse. Personally I prefer the European version, the North American one is technically the more finished game and has some improved features (especially being able to drive over spiders), but I really don't like the level design in it. All its levels were made by Gameworld Seven and you can really tell they weren't made by the DDI level designers like Karl White and David Allen. They're all more formulaic and easy, while the Euro levels have more interesting layouts and objectives. But the US version seems to be a lot more popular, so maybe it's just me.

Nice walkthrough! I've had this US NTSC PlayStation 1 version since early 2016. But didn't you already upload it alongside the one for the UK PAL version of it to KZfaq before?
@Ringtail
@Ringtail 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I wanted to redo them both now that there's a new emulator called DuckStation that's much easier to use and lets you stop the texture wiggle ps1 games have, plus in my old walkthrough I was sloppy and even skipped a bunch of levels, see my pinned comment for more info.
@Ringtail
@Ringtail 2 жыл бұрын
why does this version get so many more views than the European version? with my old uploads this had 25k vs 5k for the euro one, and it looks like these new uploads are heading the same way with more than twice as many views here so far. Did the US version just sell way more copies even though the EU one had nearly 9 extra months on the market? I know neither version is popular but I'd expect them to be more even.

i'm trying to find out who made this amazing soundtrack! is there anyone credited?
@Ringtail
@Ringtail 2 жыл бұрын
John Saull, Jon Harrison, and Joseph Harper are all credits for "sound and music". Though Saull seems to be credited for only sound effects in all other games he worked in, while Harrison is credited for graphics in almost everything else, so I'm guessing Harper did most of the music, though unfortunately he seems to have no other credits. Mark Boobyer and Alan Boorman are also credited for "musical contributions" in the PC game only, so I'm guessing they made the three tracks that play in levels in the PC game. I asked Stewart Green about who made the music at some point and he claimed "the musician" was famous for something else and that he wasn't listed in the credits. No idea if he's misremembering or talking about one of them or someone else. Someone also apparently contacted Saull at one point and he said only him and Harper made all the sound and music. I don't know what the truth is out of all of this unfortunately, all these people seem much more obscure than the composers for the Lego Island and Racers games.

@@Ringtail wow you went real deep into that! Which is very understandable cause the lack of other music credits to those dudes is kinda mind-boggling considering this might be one of the most sophisticated 5th gen soundtracks.
