The thing that confuses me too is the fact that the more expensive R2-D2 isn't even officially a UCS set, so we have two non-UCS sets of R2-D2 out at the same time at different prices, confuses me a little bit but they packed in just as much detail into this $100 version so I'm happy with it

I don’t care what anyone says, including LEGO themselves, it’s a ucs set. No matter what you say to convince me that it’s not, it is. It was released on may 4th, which is the day a UCS set releases every year. It’s the scale of a ucs set and you just have to admit and not look away that it is in fact one.

This R2 looks nearly perfect, but there's just something weird looking about his head that I can't quite pinpoint. I think maybe there's too much grey space between his eye and the blue marks on the top of his head? It makes it seem like he's wearing a tiny little hat or something idk

The Darth Malak gives me hope that we’ll see other KotoR stuff someday. Even just getting Bastila, Carth and a new Revan would be great.

You most certainly are not the only one! I could never justify a $200 R2, but $100 I can manage! I never played KOTOR so Malak is really just a bonus for me 🙂

So bizarre to see two Lego R2D2s out at the same time. In any event, I can see that Malak figure doing very well in retirement especially when it's paywalled behind a $100 set.

The way his head is built is consistent with how the helmets are made, so I think it will look good displayed near them.

Another example of a set where you can take things off/put pieces on for customization is the UCS Millennium Falcon, with the details that swap out to change the era you're displaying.

They ruined that set by forcing the sequel trilogy crap into it. It should have had all of the A New Hope group (Luke, Leia, Han, Obi-Wan, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and R2-D2. It would have been perfection.

I own the UCS R2 (still sealed) but I'll get this set for the Malek fig and because this looks like a really solid build. Plus, if we get 3PO they can be displayed side by side. I can't help but think though how nice that Malek would have been as a poly bag GWP.

I Had my reservations on buying this piece because i was concerned for the Head of R2. Now knowing that there is a printed dome dish cicle piece which is placed atop of his crown is both fantastic & brilliant in design. Thankyou for your review. Ive always loved both R2 D2 & C-3PO I also look forward to buying the 2024 miniscale Millenium Falcon.

I was going to get this regardless because of it being a more size friendly R2-D2. It’s amazing after watching this review how much they put into it and the more important printed parts. I’m fine with the smaller stickers if it was between printing those or the plaque and top dome piece. This convinced me even more.

I've never played any of the Old Republic games, so I don't really have any emotional ties to Malak... and I don't care about LEGO's buildable characters, so this is an easy pass for me. The Tantive hallway, however, is an instant buy.

I've had the "UCS" R2-D2 in my cart for almost a month now and was just about ready to pull the trigger on it until I saw this set released. Was pretty sure I was going to buy this one instead, and your review definitely helps make that decision!

I have all of the other buildable droids but never pulled the trigger on the old R2D2 because of the price and size . . . so yeah, this is a great set that I will definitely be picking up!

to be honest, i think the best lego r2 was probably remote control one that came with the mouse droid and gonk droid in the droid commander set. just because you can drive it around.

6:39 Seeing it next to Chewbacca and with the rumoured Threepio coming, I can see the appeal now of buildable characters. Having a line of quality (nonhuman) characters in scale with each other could make for some excellent displays.

I would've happily paid $100 for pretty much any other set. They could've given us an ARC-170, a massive Octuparra tridroid or a Tie Defender. But instead they make another buildable R2-D2 despite the fact there is still an existing one being sold. It just baffles me why they chose to make and set another R2 so soon.

I honestly wish this was a buildable Chopper since we've already gotten an R2 recently, it makes sense though because of the buildable C-3PO, hopefully they do Chopper down the line

4:58 I think the ucs Millenium falconhas that feature too where you can switch between original and sequel trilogie at the front of the ship

I like the head on the larger sized R2-D2 more. Also appreciate how the leg can retract as well. Small one still good if you’re in a budget or tight in space but I think the larger one is the better option if you can go for it IMO.

Even before the official launch, some vendors offer the Darth Malak for preorder at around 40 US$. That is a situation I would have tried to avoid, if I were a LEGO official.

I don't have an R2-D2 yet because I was hoping that Lego would one day manage to make one with a curved dome, maybe with the new igloo 1/4 dome pieces from Friends. But the fact that this one comes with Darth Malak compels me to get it.

In terms of taking things off and putting another piece on in its place being an actual function of the set the only other one I can think of is the Lego Bonsai Tree set with its different vegetation.

When you do the comparison video of the 2 could you compare the displayablity of each next to other buildable droids such as bb8, DO, BD1, prove droid, etc? I am wondering which would look better along side all of them, the $240 or the $100. I am wondering if the $100 will be around the same size/ scale as the others where the $240 is too large/ looks more out of place. Awesome video as always!

I keep hoping that with either the buildable C-3PO we get Episode I version as the minifig but it will probably be the same C-3PO we've gotten for the past 25 years besides Episode 7. I would like to eventually have the opportunity for an Episode I and/or II version of 3PO

I actually really like the outward facing studs on the head. Prefer them, even. What will ultimately determine if I get this is how the C-3PO looks next to the larger. I love the larger R2, and can't see me buying this one. I'm also not a mining guy, so Malak doesn't really do anything for me.

Classic LEGO Star Wars moment of releasing many versions of a specific part of Star Wars during one time frame, instead of trying to cover a broad range of Star Wars. Looking at you, Millenium Falcon 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Love that Lego is doing these smaller scale builds, people want to have builds of their favourite characters that don't cost $200+ and they need a dedicated room for. I think they're realising this with the helmet sets and midi scale ships as well

4:56 I believe that the closest things to the attachments you mention were the old x-wings,where you could turn it from Luke's to Biggs' by swapping some printed tiles,as well as the UCS millenium falcon, which can turn from an original trilogy falcon to a sequel falcon.

Doing the math, this is actually a great set to get for the price your paying for it, you spend $10 every 100 pieces and usually a 100 piece set nowadays is about $15 so this is most definitely a fairly priced set with great details and on top of that you have malek which pays for half of the set already. DEFINITELY get it while you can! Im happy with mine that’s for sure!

the bigger one has nicer play funcitons going for it. but since it is a display set and not a play set, i would not see my self taking the set out the shelf a lot anyway. so the 100 dollar set is my preference
