Project Chasm Cave - Part II
On the slopes of Mt Hymmetos lay various caves and chasms. One of the most renowned is the Asteriou Monastery chasm cave, which consists of three chambers. The entrance to the first and largest chamber is a small crack in the rocks about 1.5 meters long and 0.5 meters wide. After this crack comes a sheer drop of more than 20 meters to the bottom of the chamber. After a first attempt to explore this cave, using a small mobile crane to lower a bright LED light and action camera through its entrance, I built a small remote-controlled vehicle that can rappel down the cave using a soft cotton belt. With the second stage of the exploration complete, the road is now open for further cave-exploration missions, using my rappelling system! Maybe landing a small tracked vehicle or crawler at the bottom of a deep cave. Who knows! Stay tuned for more and enjoy!
Cave exploration vehicle specs :
Rappel mechanism : 2x LEGO XL motors
Battery : 3-cell LiPo
Remote Controller : FlySky FS-i6 with 6-channel receiver
Electronic Speed Control (ESC) : Hobbywing Quicrun 880
Footage was shot on DJI Action 2 (cave), LG G6 smartphone (surface shots), and Google Pixel 6a smartphone (build process).

There's nothing that cannot be done using LEGO. Give me a few years (and a big rocket) and I'll land a LEGO rover on the moon...

Journey to the Centre of the Earth, LEGO Technic style. I am very happy to watch part 2 of this mission, after watching part 1 some number of months ago. Congratulations on the success of your mission! Did you achieve all that you set out to do? Can we expect part 3 of this mission? Did you get any ideas from the comments on part 1, on how to safely descend your vehicle?

Glad to see you're back to see part two! This mission opens up possibilities for many more projects, as the rappelling system seems to be able to lift a lot of weight (with the right gearbox of course). Definitely expect to see a small vehicle rappelling down a cave, and further exploring using tracks or tires to move around at the bottom. I'll need an FPV system to achieve that though, as I'll have to see where the vehicle is going. The comments always help to further brainstorm on any problem. The comment section actually inspired me to use a retractable cord to measure the depth of the cave and monitor the position of the vehicle to avoid smashing on the bottom at full speed.

@@brickandgear has anyone else explored the cave in recent times? What has prompted you to explore this particular cave?
@brickandgear

@@EVP22 it's very popular among cave climbers for training reasons. Very accessible, with a good total depth and it is 100% mapped. Fun, but grim, fact during the first exploration of the third chamber, two human skeletons were discovered dating from the 1800s. A clear sign that there was another entrance to the third chamber that collapsed when the two humans were inside. I visited the entrance to that cave, as well as many others on that mountain, when I was a student riding my mountain bike. I was always fascinated by deep cave systems, high mountains, and all sorts of exploring so I decided to bring my LEGO into the adventure! Now I need to convince Elon Musk to launch one of my vehicles to the moon...

You can actually see it in the building process part of the video. I shot it after completing the mission. If you look closely you might notice there's dirt on the tires, although I cleaned them up before shooting the video.

You could add some wheels on the sides too for better descends and another camera on the other side or at the bottom so you can see where you're going. Looking forward to the part III. with the exploration vehicle :)
@brickandgear
@brickandgear 20 күн бұрын
I tried to keep it as light as possible, otherwise it wouldn't be able to climb back up again. I can't wait for part III as well, but I can't do it yet. I'll need to build an FPV system first, as I'll need to see what the vehicle sees down there.

@@brickandgear You could try doing it with a crane to pull it up instead of it pulling itself up also I don’t know if this would work but maybe use multiple cranes that lowers it down and uses and electromagnet to connect to it but it would have to be really strong to do that without disconnecting when hitting stuff and since it seems to mostly be a really wide chasm you could probably make a crane that is stationary but and moves but you would have to get rid of the fencing over it and if it gets stuck you wouldn’t have to push the rope and also since there is probably terrain it would get stuck on I think you should add tracks and a secondary crane that isn’t Lego to pull it out in case of emergency that has a way longer rope and Is connected too the build securely so it can be pulled without the worry of it falling off

@@Ayers-dog-lover I used a crane during my first attempt. The problem with the crane is building a winch that can handle a huge amount of pressure that builds up as the rope gets wrapped around the winch axle. Wrapping 25 meters of rope stresses the build very much and it's prone to structural failure, as axles tend to bend under the immense load. So, for such a depth, using a belt and rappelling system was much easier. Then comes the rate of descent/ascent. A winch has a much lower rate of descent/ascent and my DJI Anton 2 camera can only record 15 minutes of 2.7K video before overheating and shutting itself down. So, it would probably shut down before it resurfaced. With the rappelling system, the vehicle went down almost 25 meters and back up again in under 5 minutes! Your electromagnet idea is amazing! A fantastic system to lower a small vehicle and release it once it reaches the bottom! I'll have to brainstorm on it!

Scary that you can't rotate the camera and have no vision of any obstacle on the ascent.
@brickandgear
@brickandgear 20 күн бұрын
I tried to balance the vehicle so that it tilts a bit forward, to protect the camera from smashing on the rocks and help the vehicle to overcome any obstacles during the accent by using the wheels on top. It came back up, so I guess it worked 😁. I would like to build a cheap FPV system in the future though. It's very important to be able to see where the vehicle is going, be it a ship, land vehicle, or anything else.

Φαντάσου και το εξής : Μόλις το όχημα επέστρεψε στην επιφάνεια, αφαίρεσα την action camera και πέρασα όλο το αρχείο της λήψης στο κινητό μου για να δω το αποτέλεσμα. Το πρώτο συναίσθημα ήταν η πλήρης απογοήτευση βλέποντας ότι το μοναδικό που τράβηξε ήταν κοντινό στον τοίχο όσο βάραγε με τα "μούτρα" το όχημα στην σπηλιά. Και ξαφνικά, μετά από 35 δευτερόλεπτα απογοήτευσης, ο θάλαμος ανοίγει και φαίνεται η σπηλιά σε όλο της το μεγαλείο! Υ.Γ. Ο βράχος που είναι σαν πρόσωπο, σε ποιο σημείο φαίνεται;
