Leica 25mm F1.4II -It's weather sealed now!
Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 II APSH. is an update to one of the nicest lenses for MFT cameras. The new version is weather sealed, but still has the same beautiful rendering of the original.

I was considering both Olympus 1.8 and 1.2. In terms of price and speed, Summilux sits 1/3 in terms of speed below PRO lens, but at half of price, half of size and its very light. 2 stops faster than both of my workhorse zooms, so it makes it perfect backup for low light scenarios, while still compact enough to be carried in a compact bag. And yeah, its water resistant now.

Same consideration for me. I had the old Leica 25mm and replaced it with version II. For curiosity I made a quick comparison and found that the new version is visibly sharper in the outer areas wide open. Optically a very good lens, but the issue with the aperture remains. And I would prefer a round or tulip lens hood that can be reversed.

I bought the Mark i with my GH-3 way back when I started my photographic journey. It was a great investment. I'm gonna skip the Mark ii but I'd recommend either version to anyone learning photography. Shooting this prime forced me to think about composition, depth of field and the importance of the exposure triangle. Good on Panasonic for updating an oldy but good.

I just love this lens. I have owned the Lumix 25 1.7, Zuiko 25 1.8 and this one, I sold it some time ago and I regreted immediately, I just bought another unit this week and I am incredibly happy with it. With the weather sealing makes the perfect companion for my Em5 Mark III, and there is something about the contrast and colors this lens generates that really pleases me.

I have never found "weather sealing" to be worth anything. I have used cameras a very long time and have never needed "weather sealing". Even an unsealed lens can take a few rain drops. I have taken photos on boats splashing about in the sea and on sea walls with the English Channel in a "bit of a blow" (force 10 complete hoolie, spray and spume everywhere, people and caravans being lifted and thrown). We take the photo and tuck the camera away again - under the rain jacket on the woolly jumper which dries the droplets off.

Trank you for the video. I think this lens is a very usefull update of the predecessor. The Mk.I was already very good. Just a bit slow, loud focusing and not weathersealed. They fixed that. I think my version I is sharper than my m.zuiko 25mm f1.2 pro. Subjectivly seen I assume.

Thanks for the review of this lens. Really like the sound of it. I understand what you mean about character. I've a Olympus OMD Mark II and bought the Pro 25mm lense but I find it too heavy. I've been inclined to sell it and keep the 12-40. In some ways I find my images lack the soul of my old images taken on film. Which is why I picked up a X100F I'm loving it. When I can get out to a camera store I'm going to check the Leica 25mm. It might help me reconnect to my OMD.

I like my Lumix 25mm f1.7 -- was very affordable, not weather sealed and no stabilization, but for my photo and video purposes the quality is fine. Yes, the Leica 25mm f1.4 grabs a little more light and is now weather sealed, but -- for me -- it's not worth the additional cost for the Leica. I do not see a specific improved spec on the Leica lens which I need (enough) to justify spending all of that additional money compared to the Lumix 25mm f1.7. But that is me specifically and my needs/budget. If I made a living from my photography and videography (don't I wish!!!) -- then moving up to the Leica lens would almost certainly happen -- in the long run the improved features over the 25mm f1.4 would definitely be worth the investment. But thank you for the time checking out that lens -- and considering the various types of "stay at home" orders across the world -- Finland is a beautiful country (even in the Lumi!), so if you are able to get out, and keep a distance from other people -- do it. I can still do that and it is helping keep me sane!

Thanks for that review. Now I know that (a) I don't need to replace my Mk I 25mm lens and (b) how to solve the lens hood flaw. I used a chinese generic 46mm lens hood, which works fine but looks ugly because of the unused bayonet mount. A spare H-ES045 lens hood is easy to get on the big river or the electronic bay. -- Best, Johannes

Love the lens but agree 100% Matti about the hood. I don't have the 45mm macro to switch hoods so my work around with my street outfit bag is to leave the 25mm on my GX9 without the hood, and then place the 25mm hood over the bottom half of the Leica 15mm lens and put that in its pouch so it takes up almost no more space than having the 15mm with me.

While I wish the optical formula had been revised, there are enough folks happy with it. My bigger hope is that more of the mft lineup gets revised with weather sealing. If the g90 and em5 bodies are sealed, there should be enough small primes to put on them, not just this lens and the oly 60mm macro.

I have been using version 1 of the 25mm F1.4 when I go bicycle touring. It's outdoors for weeks at a time but the weather does not seem to have affected it. I only take one lens with me on the bike so I have room to leave the hood on all the time. I did not notice the vignetting at F1.4 until you pointed it out. Now I think I am not good enough for this lens and I should probably have it taken away from me. I am also guilty of adding vignetting in Lightroom.

The corner sharpness issue: I first notice this problem when looking at the Fujifilm x100 series built-in f2 lens: at f2 the corners becomes a bit blurry, stop down to f2.8 the problem is gone. My guess is this problem happens when aperture is wide opened, some amount of light hitting the sensor at an angle instead of straight down. By stopping down even one stop the aperture cut off the angled light.

I just bought a used mark 1 and am finding it a sharp and interesting lens, though I haven't had a chance to take many photos with it yet. Now that the mark 2 is well established, the original version can be picked up at reasonable cost. I don't take many photos in the rain, and if I do I'm more likely to use the 12-60mm kit zoom, which is weather sealed and with that I don't need to change lenses. On the subject of noisy diaphragm, I have found this lens is quite noisy on my Panasonic GX8, but only in manual mode. Every time I focus, the lens goes to maximum aperture, with a click, then pressing the shutter button causes the aperture to close to the value I set with another click. I usually shoot in A mode though and it is not noticeable then, unless in silent shutter mode. Other lenses go through the same open/closed sequence with every shot, but their diaphragms are pretty much silent.

Interesting review! I bought the lens two month ago and didn't regret it. Sharpness ist excellent for my taste. I couldn't see any real difference to my former 25 1.8 olympus. Also AF is silent compared to the first version of the lens which I borrowed from a friend. It's all subjective of course. And well it is pricy and I miss the aperture ring which other leica lenses got. Though I really enjoy using it for full portraits and street photography. I am still wondering why Panasonic didn't do any marketing for it. By the way, your tip using the 45mm macro lenshood works fine and it's much more convenient than the bulky original one! I just ordered it with the lens as an accessory. Thanks, Thomas

Hi Matti, I'll add one more 'complaint' (not really a complaint, rather a disappointment) to the non-updated hood: the non-updated focus ring - I really don't enjoy much the rubber, and having had the 15mm and currently owning the 8-18mm, I'd definitely say Panasonic was lazy not to improve that, it really makes a lot of difference to me for what concerns the look and feel. Anyway, I'm really enjoying this lens and I hope a few more smallish weather-sealed primes will come :)

I've never considered weather sealing to be a huge plus point for this type of lens. Do we use it in the shower? During inclement weather do we want to be outside taking photos? We can get an "atmospheric" look but the light is usually poor. Unless they're gas tight vapour can get in and we get condensation. It is an old design and maybe Leica favoured a fine accurate focus rather than a fast one on the Mark 1. It's a lens I traded when I should have kept it. Perhaps Panasonic have improved the focus motors but it is the camera that does the auto-focusing not the lens. A very sharp lens stopped down a little, very good clarity.

Rendering is classical. I would say rangefinder era style. Love bokeh. You need sharpness? Set 2-2.8 and you got amazing sharpness which still keeps its character. But don't be afraid of f/1.4 just used it appropriately, matching your picture. Weather sealing - yes! yes! It works, main reason for me to get this one. It makes my OM EM5mkIII lightweight, all weather shooting machine. It works flawlessly there. If you like 50mm in FF, this is one is must to have.

Really interesting comment about how this lens is like a vintage lens with a MFT mount and autofocus. I totally agree. I used to use version 1 of this lens with an Olympus EM5ii, and there was aperture chatter like crazy. Now I use it on a GX85 with no aperture chatter problems. Interesting. Another interesting thing about version 1 of this lens is that it has never seen a firmware update: it’s still 1.0. That either means it was perfect the first time - or more likely - the lens is incapable of firmware updates. No matter - I like it and it’s staying in my camera bag.

Thank you Mr Sulanto for another great video. I always enjoy your informative videos. I also enjoy Mr Forsgard's videos. I use mostly Oly primes and 2 Pan zoom lenses on my Oly EM10ii camera. I also own and use Pan Leica 15mm. I would also like to see videos about using Panasonic lenses Olympus bodies, and I'm sure others would like to see videos about using Oly lenses on Pan bodies. Those kind of cross brand videos are rare, but are very useful to micro 4/3 users. Perhaps you and Mr Forsgard could pool your resources to make some videos like that? Regarding "rattlesnaking" aka rattling of aperature blades of Pan Leica 25mm Mark 1 when used on Olympus bodies... I have not personally used that lens camera combination, but I know other photographers who use Pan Leica 25mm older and newer Oly cameras. They told me that a firmware update fixed that in older Olympus cameras with Pan lenses, and that newer Oly cameras don't have that issue. From what they told me, it sounds like a camera firmware update is the cure for older cameras. If I had that issue, I'd try updating firmware of camera and lens.

Hi, I hope my last photo set was at least a bit of inspiration. 2. The rattling noise - definitely NOT a lens issue: a) I came around a video of a fellow Olympus user who reported the issue on Mark I of this lens. He had to disable Flicker Reduction, and the rattling noise was gone. b) I was able to replicate this issue on M.Zuiko 75mm f1.8 and M.Zuiko 45m f1.8 on my M10 and M5 Mark III bodies. Again, disabling Flicker Reduction fixed the issue. I dont have any Lumix body to test it, but as far I can tell, its not a lens issue. I cant wait until my Summilux 25mm F1.4 arrives, however it was delayed :D

Very interesting! I was always annoyed be the rattling. I can confirm that it is present with all my Olympus bodies,but not with Lumix. Turning off flicker reduction reduces the effect on my PEN-F, but not completely. I think that the older Olympus cameras haven’t that option, at least I can’t find it. The AF is slow with these cameras, definitely slower than with the M.Zuiko 25mm that I had before. Seems that this is a Lumix-only lens - which is a pity, because I love the bokeh. (That’s why I traded the M.Zuiko in.)

Hello I got this lens (25mm f1. 4 mkII) one week ago with a Lumix DC-G9 and the first thing that surprised me it's the rattling noise. The aperture makes an awful sound wh en the light suddenly changes. Ex: indoor you spot a dark area and then the window. Panasonic support told me this is normal. I thought about returning this lens but I really want this focal and aperture.
@Mir1189

@@gofros8052 Mine arrived just today, i want to test it tomorrow (its Mark II version btw). 1. To fix rattling noise, disable Flicker Reduction. 2. This is rather a new experience i got with this lens, but i realized it was similar with Vario 35-100 F2,8... Shortly after i started to test it, the lens wasnt so good at focusing and focusing might be a bit noisy at first. After some using the noise was gone and the focusing was much more smooth. You know after manufacturing and lying at the shop for months, some mechanical parts might be dry. After a while the old will get to all mechanical parts and its ok.

A great review but, the chromatic aberration is a deal breaker; its the reason I never bought the MkI. I guess it was silly to expect them to correct this without changing the fundamental optical design. I will stay with my Lumix 25mm f1.7 which is a fantastic lens. I have to say you are the only person I have seen raise this problem in a lens review along with Hugh Brownstone and that hybrid chap. Gosh I so hate modern lens designs, what is wrong with these people that they think increasing sharpness and lens speed compensates for chromatic aberration and bending corrections into firmware. No I dont think I will happily remove this in post, I edit it with my credit card; I dont buy uncorrected lenses. I no longer buy Zeiss lenses as chromatic aberration seems to be a hallmark of their design process. Frankly it stinks. I even had this problem on a brand new Leica Summicron and sold it at once. Its time photographers understood that if they don't make a stand against this rubbish in optical design that we will soon only be able to buy uncorrected lenses that are dependent on firmware to provide a usable image, thus tying the lens to the camera body; when they change the system basics you will have to buy new glass. You have been warned ;-)

If I want telephoto I simply walk closer If I require wide angle, I walk further away. Another point I would like to take you up on this lens is I have never ever experienced any chromatic aberration with this lens, also is I have never experienced any Moray likewise also absolutely no vignette , this lens is absolutely superb and optically I would hold it up to a German made 50 mm any day , at f1.4 wide open the optical quality is amazing

Honest review as always. I think this lens excells at portrait, when you need the full figure in the frame with a controlled background, and it has some use as a compact night lens for the wide aperture it allows. Other then that, it is a perfectly fin e lens once stopped down. There problem is how good the f1.7 and f1.8 25mm are wide open for a fraction of the price. Here you get half a stop more light and weather sealing still in a relatively compact lens without getting into the huge f1.2 playground. Color fringing is not good through especially if noticeable with all the in body correction that modern lumix already perform it is a potty they did not upgrade the optics to match the quality of the 15mm, which also has some color fringing problems, but not to those extent

How do the sharpness and chromatic aberration compare to other 25 and 30 mm lenses for micro four thirds? Is there any "normal" or "standard" lens for micro four thirds that produces sharp images without green or purple fringing at an aperture brighter than f/2.8? Also, is the chromatic aberration from this lens only produced in the extreme corners as the DXOMARK tests would suggest or do you see that throughout the frame?
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 жыл бұрын

@keithholland4322
@keithholland4322 4 жыл бұрын
@@mattisulanto That's what I've been noticing. I wonder if it's a quality control issue. For example, dxomark.com shows the 25mm f/1.7 lens to be very soft throughout most of the frame until it is stopped down a LOT. On the other hand, imaging-resource.com is just gushing with praise for the sharpness of that lens! So far, I have found it to be adequate for my purposes. In fact, the only lens I've sold so far because of problems with the image quality was the Olympus 45mm f/1.8. The chromatic aberration was just making for a lot of extra work in post production, so I traded it for a Panasonic 42.5mm f/1.7 and I've had no issues with that lens. While there are a few micro four thirds lenses, such as the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 and Sigma 56mm f/1.4 that everyone seems to agree have impeccable optics, with the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7, Olympus 25mm f/1.8, Panasonic/Leica 25mm f/1.4, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, and Olympus 25mm f/1.2, it seems to depend on who you ask and none of them seem to be anything particularly remarkable.

@@mattisulanto Thank you for the reply. They have a separate disclaimer that they do not guarantee that the lens will not be damaged even on Panasonic bodies, so why would they need a footnote that says it is weather sealed IF it is on a Panasonic body? Could it be related to the reports of gaskets problems while mounted to Olympus mounts? I've been reading about it since 2016, but have never heard or read anything officially from the makers. I have accepted that it is a best effort scenario, and am impressed with my Olympus weather sealed pro lenses while on Olympus weather sealed bodies. I think that the PL 25 F1.4II is a great deal considering the cost of the Olympus 25 F1.2, but wish that there were at least assurances of compatibility for physical attributes such as the gasket at the mount which is the key component for weather sealing. If sharpness doesn’t matter, then why bother paying a premium price for this lens? Just get the Panny f1.7 or Oly f1.8 instead. Same as Fuji X-photographers say about the Xpro3. “If you don’t like the new back flip screen, don’t buy it, It’s a photographers camera anyway,”. Brand loyalists who will follow loyally and not call a spade a spade. Simply say, “while this Panny Leica is a nice lens, it’s not worth the extra cash compared to the existing 25mm lenses in the system”.

I knew this comment was coming, but like I said, this lens is not for everyone. I made it very clear that if you are a pixel peeper, do not buy this. Had I recommened this lens without any reservations would have been "brand loyalism". I also made it clear that is one choice among the super sharp contemporary designs. I really like this lens and use it a lot and I wouldn't use it, if I didn't like it. Not everyone understands the difference between a sharp photo and a beautiful photo and there is nothing wrong with that. We all look at photography from so many different angles. Like I've said many times before, there is no right or wrong in photography. So, keep up the good work and choose the best lens for you.

sulantoblog don’t get me wrong, I get some of what you’re saying. It’s the reason I still use M43 gear and haven’t bought into another system. Some of the best photos in the would weren’t pin sharp, but when Olympus or Panny release a lens or camera just for the sake of releasing something new, it irks me. They put a rubber seal on this thing and said, voila. Be bold (taking about M43 in general) or go home.

@@vermontmike9800 I took it to mean that the lens produces a pleasing image aesthetic but it has technical issues that people who prefer sharpness, cool strategic looking images wouldn't care too much for. These leica lenses by Panasonic are well known for microcontrast (portrait qualities).

The CAs on this lens are really bad. Like in "I don't want to pay a premium for this quality"-bad. It took me some minutes to get rid of the CAs in post, when using this lens even in not soooo difficult light situations. Absolutely not recommended and for what it delivers at 1.4 definitely overpriced. Of course you can stop it down, but isn't the whole point of a wide aperture to use it?

Does it weathersealed when using on Olympus body? 🥹 I have no data about it.

Well, it's the same lens whether you mount it on Olympus or Panasonic and therefore the weather sealing is also the same.
