Matt, some extra Leitz units for macro photography you might need a calculator for the correct new exposure time. More close up photography with the Leica rangefinder cameras by the aid of four different Leitz units. 1.Reflexhouse with bellows plus almost any lens. On the reflexhouse is mounted a 90 degree, a 45 degree prisma finder with a loupe. Or a straight down chimney finder. 2. Extension tube (three different lengths), with four legs (with three different length positions), plus a 50 mm Leitz lens. The set is looking down and can copy the DIN sizes A4, A5 and A6. 3.Vertical Leitz stand with screen, 50 mm lens, loupe and base frame Factors 1:1 1:1,5 1:2 1:3 and four insert frames. 4.Left-right sliding unit with screen and loupe. At the front side a bellows or a variable extension tube is mounted. After having focused the camera body must be slided to the left; in line with the 50 mm lens. Mind the fact that not all rangefinder cameras have TTL. A new calculation must be made for every different extension of the tubes or bellows.

Thank you for that. That was definitely intimidating, but I'll remember this "macro-photography" video of yours. Most of your viewers probably have at least a Leica "M" camera? I'd appreciate a video dedicated to "macro" photography with an M body. What is the "fun" of macro photography?

I just use the Visoflex III for macro work with the M system. Just works great. No EVF needed and much more convenient.

Similar to what you show with CL and extension tubes, I am using M and LTM lenses with cheap Neewer macro extension tubes and either LTM/NEX or M/NEX-adapter on my Sony A7R.

Hi Martin, ah great. Yes there are so many ways to do the same thing. I just shared what I use. The CL or SL is as close as us Leica shooters get to Sony in terms of easy lens adapting :) Part 2 of the video to follow but this is more general tips than Leica gear.

Hi Thomas. Welcome to Leica! M cameras are not ideal for macro. I would adapt any non-M lens (that can focus closer) and use the EVF to focus.

Thanks for this video! Of course you've done a macro video! You are really building an encyclopedia of Leica, continuing the work of Erwin Puts who I understand sadly passed away recently. In addition to considering the Nikkor 200/4 micro, I'll also look at a macro adapter for my R 135 or Elmarit-M 90 to see which will get me closest to 1:1 or less. I still like the idea of having a 200mm though.

Thanks James, this is one of my early videos! Trying to work out what people wanted to watch. It wasn’t Macro for the majority! Yes you can use 90 & adapter. It might be better than 135 as it focuses closer on the focus itself - MFD (from memory).

Been shooting macro on first Nikon and now Canon for about 10 years. Very technically challenging field but very interesting and rewarding. Now exclusively shooting full flash macro with the Canon mpe65. Will likely never shoot macro on a Leica but interesting to watch nonetheless. Wide angle lenses work best for reversing but I find it's hardly worth the trouble and would recommend buying a proper macron lens.

I'm eager to try a macro shot. I can borrow a Leica 90mm Macro Elmar f4. I own a Panasonic Lumix S1r which is essentially a Leica SL2 which is L mount. I will have access to the Macro Mount and an M to L mount. I'm curious whether the focus distance will be 0.5m or maybe less due to the addition of the M-L adapter. The plan is to photograph a flowers petals using the pixel shift mode to create a 187mp image which could be cropped to include only the centre part of the image.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks I'm thinking you mean the TT Artisans adapter. I see it's not in stock in the UK. I'm curious whether it would allow closer focusing than the Leica Macro Adapter (which I'll have access to). The Leica Macro Adapter allows focussing to 0.5m on the Leica 90mm Elmar Macro. Focussing shouldn't be too much of an issue on the Lumixx S1r. I can also use a Manfrotto 455 macro rail.

Ok Matt, here's a new question for an old video. I have a Canon fd 100mm macro lens. Are you saying I can use a closeup adapter behind the FD-M adapter I already use for a couple other FD lenses on my M10? I never really gave it a thought.......

Hi yes if I used Nikon F lens and I want to get closer I use Leica-Nikon adapter, then Nikon macro tube, then Nikon Macro lens.

I like your videos! But I think you forgot to mentioned the visoflex system for close-ups. You can buy a visoflex system for a fraction of what "googles" cost. You will have an slr-type of camera and se through the lens. It is however a bit bulky to work with, but it is a much cheaper option. However I do agree with you, that a lens adapter with a macro lens of whatever brand (i.e. Nikkor Macro 60mm) is the way to go. It must be the most economical way. Of course you no longer uses Leica lenses!

I had a visoflex 1 back in the day when I had a Leica 3f - cumbersome, but worked pretty well. I did wonder about getting a visoflex 2 or 3 when I swapped over to M Leicas, but never did that. When I originally got into Macro in a bigger way, I got a Nikon (F2s) reflex and the macro lenses for that. Much easier to use for macro work, even if the body / lens combination is bigger. Eventually Nikons became my 'alternate' system and they still get used - autofocus, wide range of lenses, etc etc - but it's the weight and size that keeps me using Leicas, which I find easier to handle and carry round. The Nikon comes out when I want to do macro or (not often) use something like a 180mm.

@@Orwic1 Thanks agreed I think Nikon is much better suited for macro! Yes I think I prefer MF for macro but i'd say my 3 favourite Nikon mount lenses for that are Nikkor 55mm Micro, Nikkor 60mm Micro AF, Tamron 100mm f2.8 Macro (I use these for portraits too!) :)

Hi, if you want a cheap film solution for macro I'm afraid you need to forget your M6 and just buy a Nikon SLR or you could get a Leica R camera + 60mm macro lens but more expensive. The M6 is far from ideal. I know I have it! (See my very old lockdown video and that might answer your question)

I went into this Leica thing trying really hard to justify an all-Leica lens setup, but between your videos and other sources plus my past experience with Voigtlander, I've decided that my kit will be 28mm Ultron f 2, 50 mm f1.2 plus an Elpro for food photography, and a 90mm APO-Skopar. I currently have an OMD EM-5 on M43 with the Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f 0.95. Moving to a Leica M11.This lens is amazing, though.

I am wondering about a macro lens to attach to my Leica SL. Would you recommend the Summicron-R 60mm? APO-Lanther 50mm + DCR-250? Macro Elmar 90mm F4 is a bit long.

Hi there is no 60mm Summicron but you can get the 60mm R Elmarit like I now have. Great lens! (or use Nikon F and adapter to Leica.. like the Nikkor 50mm f2.8 Micro. Excellent and cheap). I'm happy with both.

Hi Riley, I get most adapters or spaces frome Amazon or eBay. Just search Leica adapter, L39, LTM, M39 and see what you find. I get some bits from China (eBay) as they seem less common vs. Sony lens adapters etc.

Hi John, the APO 90 is my sharpest and smallest M, the 90mm pre-ASPH gives the most vintage Leica look and nice bokeh (see both vids)

Dear Matt, many thanks for your video. I have a specific question re using Noctulux on M10 (with Visoflex) and Leica macroadapter. Min focusing distance of Noctuilux is 1 m. What will be the focusing range using this adaptor with Noctilux? Between 1 m and x sm? Many thanks in advance.

клео omg hello, i haven’t used this specific adapter but macro normally means close so I would get very close such as 0.2m maybe .. because there is not much space to put the adapter for M lens to M body so it is not useful for say portraits. The better option is get the SL or CL and use M to L macro adapter. Then can use like normal. 0.5m etc. I have it now for testing so I will do video when I can get it working.

Hi Matt, thank you for this video. I just bought Leica SL and now I have purchased also Elmar 5cm f3.5. The seller offer also Nooky close-up set. So You mentioned that this Nooky can be used with CL. Could you tell me me please if I could use it with SL? Or may be it is possible to rid out the viewfinder and frame from the tube itself?

Hi Nathan, yes you can use on any mirrorless (like the SL and CL) in addition to the Leica RF cameras it was designed for. Yes you don’t need to use the VF so it doesn’t need to align to anything. (See my more recent video - maybe search in the Leica playlist or go to videos tab on my homepage). I show this in more detail. (For a visual). Ou can’t collapse fully that lens on the CL. I’m not sure about SL, it might be ok but be careful.
