The Leica Disto D2 Laser measuring device is a magnificent tool, this review looks at it from the perspective of a cabinet install/renovator. The accuracy is amazing, the time savings are abundant! This just may be the best tool you don’t currently own.

In my opinion if you want to know who to trust about accuracy and detail of a tool or material in the construction world, it’s the cabinet guy. At least the guys doing high end custom stuff. There’s a ton of individual guys in other trades with crazy skills, but installing 3 dimensional objects plumb, level, flush, square and aligned consistently at the same time against walls and ceilings, or walls and floors that aren’t, at the same time, is not like cladding flat surfaces with linear product that painters come make look good after. So if a cabinet installer is impressed with a tool, it’s very unlikely it won’t meet your high standards.

I come from a different world, as a 1st AC (focus puller) in the film industry. Our laser measures have to be insanely accurate when we shoot long lens/wide open and have extremely shallow depth of field. Getting properly lens distances is crucial. The D2 is generally considered to be a good mid-tier measure and I’m thinking of buying it. The Hilti PD-E is the industry standard but that thing is $600-$700 USD
@TheFunnyCarpenter

That’s very interesting, I never considered using the unit to get distances for pulling focus. I’ve recently just learned about hyoerfocal distances and have been learning how to set up a simple manual focus setup.

Will it display in just inches and show 1/16 and or 1/32? For example, is it able to display 143" 1/16? I need a unit that is able to display in all inches and also show 1/16. Some will only display feet & inches and only 1/8". Thx.

I have this. I use in my job as a Realtor. My husband is cabinetmaker and we are always cross checking laser against tape. Couple questions..do you ever calibrate? (The two modes conflict incrementally at times) and can you change how the measurement read out as straight ft/inches vs ft/decimals . In other words I want it to read 4' 6" vs 4.5 . I don't like doing the math conversions when it reads 4.9 to understand it's actually 4'11".. hoping you can help me know how to change that

The manual says to simultaneously press and hold both the plus and minus buttons for 2 seconds. This switches it to the next unit display mode. I don't have one (saw this as part of my research) but I figured I'd better find out because you're right; decimal inches suck. So I was happy to discover that the D2 does indeed allow for a 1/32" (or other fractional) readout. Here's a link to the manual at the Leica site: shop.leica-geosystems.com/sites/default/files/2021-11/Leica_DistoD2_UM_en.pdf Hope this helps.

Hi, Can I use this laser to measure distance from my position on ground to rooftop or to the top of a mast or pole? I get the sense my use case is not supported - that these devices only work when beam is perpendicular to surface at distance. If so they are worthless to me. Thanks, John
@any0n378
@any0n378 Жыл бұрын
I dont know about the Leica, but the Hilti PD range has a viewfinder on the side that allows you to see where the laser is pointed without having to see the dot. They also have a function where you can buy a monopod, screw it into the back, and the laser will take the monopod length into account when you measure in line with the monopod. This allows you to be standing upright when you look through the viewfinder instead of laying on the ground when you take the measurement.

@@TheFunnyCarpenter I love using it. I had to take measurements the insides of all my windows for new blinds. Regardless what digital device I used, I loved how quick and accurate the process was. Bosch screen and characters are very small and hard to read and the backlight turns off way too quickly. I haven't checked to see if you've done any updates from this video which shows as 2 years old but here's my input. I would take a bet that many lasers use the same circuitry but have fancier cases and buttons on the outside. Maybe brighter laser dots. I bought a laser about 3 years ago and the company for the name of the unit is AceGmet... Or something like that It may be made now by a company called Mileseed. That unit is nearly identical to the one I have. For the last two years I've been measuring homes for floor covering, carpet lvp and wood flooring. I like to be accurate and when I visit a home, actually make a drawing of the home's layout to bring back for the store. It's not architect quality but I do use a scale to measure it accurately. By having an actual drawing, the flooring store owner can talk with the homeowner about the different aspects of their home such as were to place transitions or discuss different flooring options in different rooms. Anyhow I bought a $37 laser measuring device for kicks and giggles. I was not doing measuring for the store at this time. However once I started doing measures, I started using my laser measuring tool. I'd make a measurement with my tape measure and then I'd back check it with this cheap laser. One has to do this many, many times to trust that little red dot 23 ft 7 and 5/16 inches away. It's hard to trust that red dot until you back check dozens and dozens of times with your tape measure. Once you've gained confidence ......you won't want to go back to using a tape measure. 😁 The shop asked me to go measure an accountant's office. I stopped by the day before to look the place over and to decide how I was going to draw this one up. It was 115 ft by 55 ft and there were 19 offices around the perimeter of the building plus the reception area plus the hallways, conference room etc...... This wasn't going to be a 30 minute job. Some of the distances on this job were quite long so I asked the shop owner to bring his Leica laser so that I could use it and compare it with my cheap one. I believe his Leica cost over $800 when it was new. My first test was from a bookshelf at one end of the hallway. I placed it against the wall on a shelf and aimed it down the hallway. It was 74 ft 4 and 13/16 inches to a far wall. Next, I placed my $37 laser on the shelf, in the exact same spot and it measured 74 ft 4 and 13/16 inches also. The only thing I don't like about the Leica is that you have to plug it into recharge it. With my cheap one, you just slap in 2 new AA batteries and you're good to go. The Leica of course has a brighter screen. It also has a camera, bluetooth, and you can enter all your measurements into a computer and it will draw out the floor plan for you. I'm sure that program is not cheap. Too the many people out there, especially carpenters, you can't live without one of these snazzy little devices. The only drawback on virtually every device made is that they put the button on the face. I think it would be much easier to use if they put it on the side where you would rest your thumb. I love your content. I forgot to mention my cheap laser also does square foot triangles cubic feet in case you want to fill your house with water 😁
