I know this is an old video at this time, and in spite of watching many from you I missed this one. I had a reasonable IIIf and was happy but somehow I managed to break the slow speeds. I sold it on but missed the Barnack. Some time later I fell on a beautiful IIf and never looked back. I didn't need slow speeds or self timer so why have something that could break; my IIf with a 2.8 Elmar 50 is a dream. I have a lot of fairly good kit but this gives me more pleasure than most of it.

A tip to load the camera without cutting the film you can use a thin plastic card, type business card, and slide into the camera to help guide the film right into the camera.

I love my iiif and my prized m3, but medium format is much easier to handle in the darkroom (remember these?) My favorite camera can produce immaculate 11 x 14 prints, fits in my hip pocket, and set my back a whopping $200: a 1950s Zeiss Super Ikonta.

Interesting video. I've used one Leica III and you're right the focus it's perfect. I like to focus more with this than my M6 camera. But the M6 focus very well too and it's easier to frame, it's has a parallax correction, it's far more faster to change film, and you don't need to cutting before use it. So sometimes I will.be tempted of buy one, but... I see that my M6 do more or less the same and more easily. Cheers from Spain and I wish you have a happy new year!

I had one. Nice little camera in the 1970s for personal use. I also used a Leica M2 with a 50mm f2. 8 Elmar. I was a wedding photographer in the 1960s. Guests arriving photos with Ilford fp3 film. The main photos were shot on medium format Rollei cameras. Now, I have a Zenit C Barnack style reflex slr. I never use it. I have a Zorki 4k rangefinder with a sharp Jupiter 8 50mm f2 lens with adjustable eyesight lever. It's easy to load and reminds me of the look of the M2.. No lugs though so I use it's half case. I am thinking of getting a Zorki 1 for occasional use. I will cut my film leaders before I leave home. It looks cool and the collapsible Industar 50mm f3.5 is pretty good.

Interesting choice! I had one for a while this year, I really liked the form factor but not the squinty viewfinder and as I couldn't bring myself to spend the silly money that the Leitz SBOOI finders are going for I sold the IIf. I then missed it and bought a Canon IVSB to fill the void. That's a camera you should definitely check out! The form factor and build quality are basically the same as the Barnack, the shutter button is silky smooth and it has combined viewfinder / rangefinder window with a clever viewfinder magnifier lever to increase accuracy.

Matt, you might mention that you don't need to cut the film in a Leica iii camera; you can use the 't' mode to open the shutter and fix the film from the front. I saw a guide somewhere online and have used this method since. No need to cut!

The IIf was my first ever Leica, bought as a graduation gift to myself after years of shooting Kievs (those cameras are just as important to me though, but that's for another story). It was a great experience, even while shooting with the Industar-22 and Industar-61, later a first gen Summicron 50. Later I bought (and still own) a IIIf Red Dial Self Timer, which upon checking its serial number, was a IIf before its current life. Seeing that owning two Barnacks was a liability to me, and needing some more money to buy lenses, I sold the IIf. Anyway story short, I'm not really missing my IIf that much with the IIIf (also the missing slow shutter speeds was a liability as well) but it was a great experience to have started my Leica journey with this model.

Leica, Leica, Leica... Exactly!!! I am also wondering which camera from my tiny collection I like best. Depends on what! For street photography and landscape photography, of those for the 135 film, I also choose my 1932 Leica Standard Model E. Damn! I also like my Exaktas, even though they are slower to use, but I can control the effect on the frosted glass very precisely. And from medium format? Agfa Isolette I and Belfoca II bellows, I think... I don't have all types and kinds, so only the ones I know and use. They must be light and handy, and I like them when they are beautiful and in the old style - vintage ... Happy New Year!

My favorite camera for walking around the streets of Portland is easily the Leica IIF. Because of the unique layout of the city with small blocks, typically it has a 3,5cm Elmar from 1938 with a round Voigtlander viewfinder. In 2020 between the pandemic, protests, fires, and such, people are currently far more hesitant if they see a camera lifted to the eye.....unless it’s my Barnack. It as often as not brings a smile from passers by. I would absolutely love to have a second body and a 5.6/28 Summaron ltm as well as the ltm 50mm Summicron from 1999 to flesh out the kit. Perhaps in time. Perhaps in time. 😀

Hi from Mexico! I could have guessed you chose a Leica iii series as your fav camera for 2020! They certainly are small and high quality! i bid on a number of vintage Leica's at auction and lost all! I ended up with an Olympus EPL 2, with only 1500 pictures, i got it dirt cheap on ebay. I have a major problem with older film type cameras, that is nobody in my area sells film or processes! I'm sure many encounter this same issue. Happy soon to be 2021!!! I'm sure many would like to forget 2020 altogether and move on to better times! Maybe Matt you can do a piece on where and or how to best deal with the film issue i brought up. It's super easy to set up an at home darkroom, but only if one has the space, and the chems/developer, fixer, and stop also have an environmental issue connected with their disposal. I guess that's why digital won out over film like it did..all in all it was just more convenient with no muss and no fuss to get one's pictures. Although, there is a certain quality that only film can deliver, as you've clearly demonstrated throughout your series.

Some Russian rangefinder cameras have a diopter too - Zorki 4 & 4K comes to mind. But more importantly, note that trend of ditching diopter overflow to SLR cameras - up till 90's, you could count non - autofocusing SLR cameras with diopter on board on one hand; Nikon F3, Pentax LX and Olympus OM 3 & OM 4 (and of course their titanium versions respectively). In what ways? I have one also.
@Seapatico
@Seapatico 3 жыл бұрын
@@terryallen9546 The separation and contrast wide open seems very similar so far. I haven't used the Canon a ton, to be fair. But I've probably shot 500,000 photos with the summilux, and I wasn't expecting the Canon to provide the sort of overall clarity that it seems to. It also has this quality where slightly out of focus subjects maintain a contrast and clarity that is really pleasing. Lenses like the Canon 50mm f1.2 EF are really good when you nail focus, but if you front focus a little, the subject goes all hazy. A lot of ltm lense do that, too. But the Canon 50mm 1.4 ltm seems like it maintains good contrast/clarity/microcontrast on subjects as they fall out of focus, which is rare and delightful. The bokeh is certainly more specific than the lux, and I'm sure the Canon has more CA and spherochromatism, and more edge softness. But overall, it has a look wide open that I really haven't found outside the lux.

Hi Matt, Your newfangled IIf looks very nice. I like the dioptre adjustment & the closer VF & RF windows are interesting. But will these new-age frivolities like flash sync stand the test of time? The trendy geometric shutter speeds are an outrage; Oskar's original scale of 20, 30, 40... allows for nuance! BTW, what's that awful circular carbuncle next to the lens mount (at 11 o'clock) all about? Happy New Year from Down-Under mate. ;-)

However, I do have a confession: I have one of those modern, coated 3.5 Elmars on the old dear. It works well with my Gossen; set the f-stop & favour the shadows with the 'nuanced' speed range. I have a 1950 FED with the old speed range, &, the older aperture set; 3.5, 4.5 &c. That takes some mental gymnastics! Ciao, fm. P.S. Barnak question: When say a model has one window/split is each half of the split one half smaller than the single window of say the M-3? Are the individual windows in the 2FA each the same size as the single window in the M-3? (In other words, how tiny does it get in there?)

Tinyyyy! Look at the footage of the back of the camera then look at any M body. Total guestimate but maybe

Do you think the ii f will go up in price like the m cameras in general? don't get me wrong I don't buy cameras because of the price increase but that would be a cool side effect ; )
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom 3 жыл бұрын
The price of the Leica iii cameras has gone up in the last 12 months so I think you're safe :).. like you I buy to use but I buy film as they hold their value. That's why I don't have a pile of modern digital bodies.

So the iif only has up to 1/25 speed. So how did you manage to take those indoor shots like the one in the subway and train station? It looks at least f8.
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Жыл бұрын
Speed from 1/25-1/1000 (if I remember well). You can use high ISO film and or bright subway stations.

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom haha... Thanks Matt. It was actually a rhetoric question. I was trying to justify how the iif would be useful in everyday situations. Then I remembered it's a Leica, and the speed settings are indeed common speeds one would use in most everyday documentary style photography. I overthink sometimes.

I concur with you general position that Barnacks are better, my father, a mechanical engineer, said of the iiig, "an entirely satisfactory camera", using one is proof. I am nearly 70 and the dioptric adjustment allows me to use the camera without spectacles. M cameras lack of one is a gross shortcoming. Your matter of fact reporting on cameras and lenses is a breath of fresh air in a world of suffocating babble. Regards, Paul Gough.

I’ve been home most the time since March but did escape after lockdown 1 and again before lockdown 3. It’s very country and individual specific I think. If you are low risk and it eases in your area then you could look to do something..but it can be stressful in the current climate, potentially getting stuck at borders or overseas not able to return or maybe catching the virus while overseas.
