I purchased a IIIf and a IIIg and had them both overhauled.. New shutters and total CLA... They shoot Excellent. They are not fast shooters but a light meter and a focus, compose window.. well it is a touch of history that shoots as well as my M7 and MA.... Really neat to hold and shoot...

Very nice to watch. I have a iiif and was amazed how small it was when I first handled it. And, they are relatively cheap. Even fully serviced ones.

There is something wrong with your lens or rangefinder. Those pictures are out of focus and it's not the lens characteristics. Anyways, nice video.

Great video - these old cameras are such a joy to use. I shoot my Kodak Retinas regularly. More great history - Dr Nagel invented the 35mm roll film cartridge we use today.

Amazingly, about 20 years ago Leica came out with a trio of modern lenses in the screw mount format: 35mm Summicron Asph, 50mm Summicron and 50mm Summilux. They were sold only to the Japanese market through a Tokyo retailer called Lemon Camera. Eventually, the lenses trickled into the second-hand market and can be found on Ebay, etc for a pretty penny. They're more valuable with the original box and paperwork.

Great video. That is definitely an interesting piece of history right there. Gotta give you props for being able to take images with a baby mounted to your chest. Can't imagine that's an easy feet. Especially with how windy Coogee beach can get wouldn't have added to the stability. Great video though. 👍

Hello my man how are you? I couldn't agree with you more, I have a 3 f and I just enjoy using it so much and when I shoot T-Max in it for portraits I almost don't need medium format anymore. I'm tempted to do a KZfaq review of it also but you and analog insights did such a good job. One thing no one mentions is the magnified focusing window is a blessing because it allows you to have much more critical focus then the modern m cameras especially the ones that don't have as much magnification. More cameras should have that. Good job with the baby 🤣

When I was in the British Army in Germany ( Iserlohn) in 1957-58 they were on sale in the town for 820 D M when we got 11.50 DM to one £1 sterling ! I had bought a CONTAX III in Berlin for £38 and was paying it off weekly as it was a 'Fortune' when I was on British Army pay ! i always wanted a IIIg ---

I have a beautiful little Petri colour 35 that also has a collapsible lens, I nearly sent it back thinking it was broken until I realised what was going on ! Luckily it shoots up a red flag if the lens is pushed in. I'm in Perth also and usually recognise exactly where you are with each video :-)

I think those aren't soft but misfocused, either your RF is misaligned or you're not locking the lens properly in the pulled our position...

I have a 1937 Leica IIIa (Deutches Reich era) in my collection, but I don't use it. I did put a roll of film through it quite a few years ago and found the lens resolved pretty well, but lacked contrast because it does not have the advantage of modern lens coatings.

Was gifted a 1957 III g in June 2020. 50mm solid f2 lens - which has damage to it. Camera just chugs. Spent many years in a Taos, New Mexico closet.

hey man. I am very certain that your rangefinder is off. it is very easy to adjust yourself. you need to find a skyscraper or smt at least 1 km away and set the lens to infinity. if it it alligned its good, if not you need to adjust it. yours looks very off to me.

Another example of "photographic unobtainium" in the 1970's. I opted for a Canon P with a stellar 50mm f/1.8 Canon, instead. It was as near to an M-series Leica I was ever going to get, and there was nothing extraneous on it. Plus, I could afford to spend money on film and the occasional interesting Leica Screw Mount lens, such as a 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor or 28mm f/2.8 Canon.

Re why Leica made the IIIg: Crossing over to the M lens mount system would not have been a hurdle for anyone, because Leica had carefully designed the M lens mount so the body thickness was exactly 1mm less than old screw mount cameras. That meant that owners of older Leica could convert all their screw mount lenses to fit M cameras by attaching a simple screw-on adapter to each lens. I suspect the main reason Leica made the IIIg was that they thought many nostalgic owners would still prefer the more compact, more traditional Barnack-style body... then were unpleasantly surprised to discover that there weren’t nearly as many of those nostalgists as they had estimated! PS - concur with the other commenters who say the 50/2.8 Elmar should NOT be “soft and dreamy” at all - several of your pics are simply out of focus, either because the camera's rangefinder is out of whack or because the dinky little rangefinder eyepiece prevented you from focusing correctly, which can happen to anyone!
