Good to see, will be interesting to compare against your 100-400. I had the Olympus 40-150 f2.8 Pro which is similarly sharp and has the flexibility of being a telephoto and can be used with the Oly 1.4 & 2.0 converters, but you don’t get the dual IS, you only get the G9 ibis, your video show just how good the dual IS works with the baby giraffe.

Hi Andrew, nice work. I have had the 200 with the 1.4 for some time now and it is my favourite (not most used) lens. I use it for Astro and it is a great low power telescope on a tracking mount. The sharpness across the whole frame is incredible. The 100-400 which I also have is noware near as sharp at the edge of the frame. Looking forward to you comparison.

2,75 yrs later the price of this wonderful lens has come down to 50% of the original launch price. Here in Germany it is even cheaper than its 50-200 zoom brother. Beside the fact that this "masterpiece" of a lens was somehow a benchmark for Panasonic to proof the quality level possible in MFT, does this still make sense today wit the newer autofocus generation in the G9ii or GH7? If it can keep up with the hybrid autofocus mode and the human/animal detection it should be a very tempting option for sport and wildlife, I guess.

@@AndreiAndrei-pg8eg 3.000 > 1.500 EUR in the last months. After the production stop of this lens it seems they‘re selling to empty the stocks. But not only here. I‘ve seen some notes that people got it even cheaper in combination with a cashback.

unbelievable piece of pure lens technology... truely amazing. But also in price :-) I have never really understood why this lens has to be soooo expensive, even compared to the latest full frame prime lenses. M43 should be a lot less glas a f2.8. Anyway, great examples and wonderful sharpness. Hopefully you aren't spoiled once you have to return to the PL 100-400. BTW, for indoor zoo photos the Sigma 56/1.4 will provide nice tele close range action with superfast f1.4.

@@jiffijoff9780 I recently grabbed the Leica 50-200 after much thought, choosing it over the 35-100. WHat a great call that was. It is such a special lens. 12mm 1.4, 42.5 1.2, 10-25 1.7. My goodness...so good

It’s a pity they decided to discontinue the lens. Doesn’t bode well for Panasonic’s MFT wildlife segment. No telephoto primes or zooms on their roadmap so far.

Huh! I had the Panny 300mm on my wishlist until I looked up and saw it was gone, so I went with the Olympus version instead. Looks like the same's happening with the 100-400. You get the feeling Panasonic wants everyone to look at their S range?

Cost caused me to put this lens onto my “one day” wish list and I bought the Olympus 100-400 instead. I went Olympus because the Panny 100-400 does not work with teleconverters. I love that Olympus lens on the G9 and value the extra reach but there are times when that brighter aperture would be nice.

How do you find the stabilisation with the G9 + Oly 100-400?
@artistjoh
@artistjoh 2 жыл бұрын
@@ericaceous1652 The stabilisation is good enough for me to get great shots at night hand held, including with teleconverters. I consider that Oly 100-400 to have been an excellent purchase. For the life of me, I cannot understand why Panasonic chose to make their version incompatible with teleconverters. That writes the lens out of consideration for me and a lot of other people. Teleconverters can be good for extra reach, but for me they are essential for macro work. So Olympus got my money, and I couldn't be happier.

Thanks Andrew, as always, excellent sharp photos, even in the challenging 'Snake House'. With that size and weight, did you find yourself more reliant on the tripod, as against the 100-400mm. What about birds in flight, that too might be more challenging with the 200mm. Looking forward to your comparison of the two lenses in a future video. Mike in Oz

Mike, I haven't used it on a tripod once...except to hold it in place while I photographed it for this video. I rely on camera settings and OIS to get me by. For birds in flight...yes challenging because you really want the versatility of a zoom.

Thank you for your informative review of the P/L 200mm as I am currently considering purchasing this lens for my G9. I have the 50-200mm f2.8-4 lens and a TC1.4 and it is half the weight and produces very sharp photos also. So why am I considering this lens? I think the constant f/2.8 would be nice for the 100-200mm range in low light as my 50-200mm F2.8-4 changes immediately as I move from 50mm out and is only f3.6 at 100mm, still good but not f/2.8. I have a D500 & 500 PF f/5.6 for a 750mm equivalent focal length and it is quite good but it doesn’t work for low light either. Because of the doubling of the weight I would not travel with this lens ordinarily but I could use it for early morning and evening wildlife photos. It is a lot of money for that limited usage but as I look at your photos I am certainly tempted. By the way I had to buy the TC14 used as it is not available in the US new unless you purchase the 200mm package. It does work well and I detect really no decrease in sharpness when I use it. I guess it’s only money. Thanks again for the review.

Hello I have tried the three PL lenses you mention. I would say the best use of the 200 is when that is the right focal length. It's OK with the 1.4TC but have had some unwelcome CA using the 2.0. I found it great when I photographed some rutting deer at sunrise when I needed the max aperture I could get. If I know I'm going to need the 400mm reach or if I'm going somewhere new, I'd tend to take the 100-400 for the reach and flexibility. The 200 is a hefty beast, the IQ is great and the camera focuses really fast on it. Having said all that, I regret selling a 50-200 PL I had and think I'd make more use of that - the quality is great and it's a fraction the size and weight of the 200. I am mainly a bird photographer and am often struggling for reach. Don't know if that helps.
@ericaceous1652
@ericaceous1652 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevewhiteley9249 was the lack of reach a factor in you selling the 50-200? I'm shopping for a telephoto to replace my 100-300 mk ii, reach is decent but sometimes crave more, also crave wider apertures for my evening fox photography
@stevewhiteley9249
@stevewhiteley9249 2 жыл бұрын
@@ericaceous1652 Exactly, it's an excellent lens but I was mainly using the 100--400 at the long end and so the 50-200 didn't get much use. Since then, I've sold the lot and gone over to Canon 🙂

Were those stabilizer shots with Dual IS? Or were you just using the OIS of the lens?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, have been away on tour. All done with the dual IS. In fact when you switch OIS on on the lens, it automatically activates the dual stabiliser. I have never tried using one without the other. But if you use this lens on an Olympus the dual stabliser is not an option (I think).
@madmax5421

@@naturesimagephotography when you switch dual IS off on the lens, it's really shaky! Does it means that the IBIS is totally useless on its own, when not coupled with OIS lenses? Or maybe switching the lens stab off stops the IBIS too?
