Recorded Live - November 5th, 2020
British photographer, Matt Stuart never goes out without his trusty Leica and, in a career spanning twenty years, has taken some of the most accomplished, witty and well-known photographs of the streets.
Join us for a conversation covering his beginnings in photography, his obsession with the streets of London and the stories behind his most recent book, Into the Fire, documenting the daily lives of a community living in an abandoned military base in the middle of the Sonoran Desert in California.
Hosted by the Tom A. Smith - Director of the Leica Akademie USA.
BIO:
Born in 1974, Matt Stuart was raised in the leafy suburbs of Harrow, North West London. A timely gift of books by Robert Frank & Henri Cartier-Bresson from his father, turned photography into a lifelong passion.
His first book, All that Life Can Afford, chronicles his work on the streets of London from 2002-2015 is in its second edition. His work has been included in survey publications on the genre of street photography, including, Street Photography Now, Bystander: A History of Street Photography and The World Atlas of Street Photography.
His work has been widely exhibited including solo shows in Finland, England and the USA. His latest book, Into the Fire, is available from Setanta books. Matt is a member of the MAPS Photography Collective.

This was a real treat! Two positive guys discussing a topic that we all love with no artsy-fartsy BS. Just straight questions and straight answers from both. We need much more of this and the photos were just terrific. I'm now a fan of both Tom and Matt! More power to you guys!

Categorizing your photos is for selling and marketing. If you’re learning don’t worry about the labels. Just worry about taking pictures. Any picture. If you get fixated on labels then you’ll start shooting for a style and your photos will be generic forgettable garbage.

I stopped listening after toxic masculinity. Sorry...that is a bunch of nonsense. It has nothing to do with photography. You are either a rude person or a courteous person when you shoot on the street.

You have the right to photograph in the street, period. In someone’s face or in a sneaky / non rude way, but either way it’s your right.
